  • Four-Dimensional Coded Modulation with Bit-Wise Decoders for Future Optical Communications
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 33:10, s. 1993-2003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coded modulation (CM) is the combination of forward error correction (FEC) and multilevel constellations. Coherent optical communication systems result in a four-dimensional (4D) signal space, which naturally leads to 4D-CM transceivers. A practically attractive design paradigm is to use a bit-wise decoder, where the detection process is (suboptimally) separated into two steps: soft-decision demapping followed by binary decoding. In this paper, bit-wise decoders are studied from an information-theoretic viewpoint. 4D constellations with up to 4096 constellation points are considered. Metrics to predict the post-FEC bit-error rate (BER) of bit-wise decoders are analyzed. The mutual information is shown to fail at predicting the post-FEC BER of bit-wise decoders and the so-called generalized mutual information is shown to be a much more robust metric. For the suboptimal scheme under consideration, it is also shown that constellations that transmit and receive information in each polarization and quadrature independently (e.g., PM-QPSK, PM-16QAM, and PM-64QAM) outperform the best 4D constellations designed for uncoded transmission. Theoretical gains are as high as 4 dB, which are then validated via numerical simulations of low-density parity check codes.

  • Replacing the Soft-Decision FEC Limit Paradigm in the Design of Optical Communication Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 34:2, s. 707-721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The FEC limit paradigm is the prevalent practice for designing optical communication systems to attain a certain bit error rate (BER) without forward error correction (FEC). This practice assumes that there is an FEC code that will reduce the BER after decoding to the desired level. In this paper, we challenge this practice and show that the concept of a channel-independent FEC limit is invalid for soft-decision bit-wise decoding. It is shown that for low code rates and high-order modulation formats, the use of the soft-decision FEC limit paradigm can underestimate the spectral efficiencies by up to 20%. A better predictor for the BER after decoding is the generalized mutual information, which is shown to give consistent post-FEC BER predictions across different channel conditions and modulation formats. Extensive optical full-field simulations and experiments are carried out in both the linear and nonlinear transmission regimes to confirm the theoretical analysis.

  • Considerations on the Use of Digital Signal Processing in Future Optical Access Networks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 38:3, s. 598-607
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this invited paper, we address the impacts of the rise of signal processing for increased capacity per wavelength and better receiver sensitivities in next generation optical access networks. We start by recalling the main channel limitations of currently deployed intensity modulated, directly detected passive optical networks. Then, with the intention of providing a benchmarking of signal processing approaches used in communication systems other than optical access, we provide a historic perspective on how digital signal processing emerged in copper access systems and we evaluate powerful techniques envisaged for future mobile generation in both air interface and radio access networks. We also assess signal processing in the light of multi-vendor interoperability by providing insights on burst mode operation and the needed protocol and monitoring procedures. Interoperability with regard to optical transceivers is also considered. Last but not least, we evaluate power consumption of digital signal processing and forward error correction solutions used in disruptive, coherent transmission approaches.

  • Polymeric optical spot-size transformer with vertical and lateral tapers
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 20:7, s. 1188-1197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design, fabrication, and characterization of a polymeric optical spot-size transformer with vertical and lateral tapers is reported. The vertical taper is formed by utilizing the planarization properties of a polymer, while the lateral taper is defined by photolithography. An optimization method for the taper shape is described based on fundamental results from coupled local mode theory. A total fiber to waveguide insertion loss of 0.6 dB has been measured with the integration of the transformer, an improvement of 2.1 dB. The spatial alignment tolerance for 1 dB excess loss was measured to ±2.7 µm, consistent with theory.

  • 40 Gb/s Data Transmission Over a 1-m-Long Multimode Polymer Spiral Waveguide for Board-Level Optical Interconnects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 33:4, s. 882-888
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical interconnects have attracted considerable attention for use in short-reach communication links within high-performance electronic systems, such as data centers, supercomputers, and data storage systems. Multimode polymer waveguides, in particular, constitute an attractive technology for use in board-level interconnects as they can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard PCBs and allow system assembly with relaxed alignment tolerances. However, their highly multimoded nature raises important concerns about their bandwidth limitations and their potential to support very high on-board data rates. In this paper, we report record error-free (BER

  • Flexible Mm-Wave Sigma-Delta-Over-Fiber MIMO Link
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 41:14, s. 4734-4742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millimeter-wave and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technologies combine broad bandwidth with spatial diversity to offer a greater data rate. This paper investigates a flexible millimeter-wave sigma-delta-over-fiber based transmitter solution with digital beamforming MISO and MIMO functionality. Those functions are controlled by a central unit connecting a remote radio head with a standardized QSFP28 fiber link. The central unit generates binary encoded intermediate frequency signals using bandpass sigma-delta modulation. The QSFP28 based fiber link transmits the intermediate frequency bitstreams to the remote radio head. The remote radio head consists of a QSFP28 module, $90^{\circ }$ hybrids, and upconverters. The remote radio head feeds four parallel, independent, coherent, and central-unit controlled 28 GHz signals to a linear array transmitting antenna. The transmitter performance is experimentally verified, demonstrating up to 800 Msym/s at an EVM/NMSE of 6.7%/-23.5 dB when tested with a 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) modulation scheme. Digital over-the-air beamforming MISO functionality is demonstrated up to 700 Msym/s across 1 m wireless distance. MIMO communication capabilities is demonstrated by over-the-air transmission of two independent 500 Msym/s to two spatially separated receivers. The results show that the proposed link can be used for realization of scalable, low-cost and flexible transmitter solution for emerging distributed antenna systems.
