  • Managing opportunism in international joint ventures : The role of structural and social mechanisms
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 32:2, s. 86-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building on transaction cost economics (TCE) and social exchange theory (SET), we develop an integrated framework in which reducing opportunism requires two sets of mechanisms: (1) structural mechanisms of symmetric dependence, symmetric equity share and resource complementarity, and (2) social mechanisms of trust, communication and cultural adaptation. The framework is tested empirically using web-survey data collected from 89 IJVs established by Nordic firms in Asia, Europe and America. Empirical data analysis based on structural equation modelling shows that TCE proposed mechanisms of symmetric dependence and resource complementarity, and SET proposed mechanisms of trust, communication and cultural adaptation reduce opportunism. Contrary to expectation, the structural mechanism of symmetric equity share does not reduce opportunism. In addition, interesting results are found related to interaction effects between social and structural mechanisms in relation to reducing opportunism.

  • Disruption, dissolution and reconstruction : A dialectical view on inter-organizational relationship development
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 35:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes to research on inter-organizational relationship dynamics by applying a dialectical approach. We analyze a situation where the relationship parties have divergent understandings of business exchange, and use a longitudinal, in-depth single case study method to investigate their interaction process. The case study focuses on the relationship between a customer and a supplier in the ferrochrome industry, using the acquisition of the supplier as the trigger of the relationship change process. The paper contributes to studies on relationship dynamics by showing how dynamics of inter-organizational relationships may result from struggles when parties' interests and goals do not align with existing relationship arrangements. In particular, we focus on the process of (re)construction of the relationship and its linkage to the structural properties of the relationship.

  • Building traits for organizational resilience through balancing organizational structures
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 35:1, s. 36-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes and explains how balancing organizational structures can build traits for organizational resilience. Organizational resilience is a holistic and complex concept. In this paper, we move beyond focusing on sudden and disruptive events in favour of anticipating the unexpected in daily organizing. Organizational resilience is understood here as building traits of risk awareness, preference for cooperation, agility and improvisation and is analysed by means of a longitudinal qualitative case study. The paper contributes to the field by showing how balancing organizational structures can foster organizational resilience traits. We show that power distribution and normative control can create preparedness for unexpected events and foster action orientation at the same time as supporting organizational alignment.

  • Understanding institutional work through social interaction in highly institutionalized settings : Lessons from public healthcare organizations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 36:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study describes and analyses how social interactions between individual actors form institutional work in the highly institutionalized setting of healthcare organizations. Based on a qualitative case study, we affirm that social interactions mainly form maintaining institutional work, thus primarily upholding the rigidity of healthcare organizations. Social interactions either preserve distance between different actors or prevent their mutual influence, which decreases the effects of institutional complexity. However, when institutional work goes beyond maintaining, social interaction is characterized by processes of claiming influence and granting influence between individual actors who adhere to different institutional logics, which allows effects of institutional complexity. Such institutional work is contingent upon physicians' strong power position, and granting influence is likely to precede claiming influence.

  • Organizational design mechanisms for the R&D function in a world of offshoring
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:4, s. 431-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Later years' globalization and increased competition has forced firms to re-evaluate their current configuration and location of activities An emerging shortage of talent and a recognition of knowledge sources far more spread around the globe have Induced firms to re-think their configuration of knowledge-intensive activities, such as R&D Disaggregation and dispersion of activities is though a double edged sword as it simultaneously enhances the access to resources and talent increasing the value of knowledge development activities in the firm, but also add to the costs of management and coordination In this article we discuss how designing the configuration of R&D activities and the utilization of organizational coordination and control mechanisms help firms to stay on top of the costs induced by inter-task interdependencies among the disaggregated R&D activities and thereby leveraging the knowledge and capabilities developed in the offshored activities We utilize the Danish wind mill company Vestas as an empirical example to illustrate our discussion.

  • When a new industry meets traditional and declining ones: An integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theory in a model of regional industry emergence processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 290-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

  • Exploring tensions in projectified matrix organisations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 25:1, s. 97-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's economic systems are characterised by flexible specialisation driven by a growth of service-based firms, a servicification of manufacturing firms and projectification. There is therefore a growing number of matrix organisations being co-dependent on line organisations and projects. The study aims to advance theorising on such organisations by empirically studying the assumption that tensions act as drivers for managerial action in project organisations and that they constitute a foundation upon which theories may be built. The study shows that tensions are concerns in project organisations and that sources of tensions are primarily created by the coexistence of fundamentally different organising principles, the way employees identify themselves with either the line function or with projects and by competition for limited organisational resources. The study differentiates project-oriented organisations and project-based organisations from one another. The main contribution is to empirically study and validate Lundin and Soderholm's (1995) [Lundin, R. A., Et Soderholm, A. (1995). A theory of the temporary organisation. Scandinavian Journal of Management, 11, 437-455] theory on temporary organisation.

  • The clash of managerial and professional logics in public procurement : Implications for innovation in the health-care sector
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 34:1, s. 78-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the enactment of public procurement and its influence on adoption and diffusion of innovation, using a case study of public procurement of a low-tech medical device innovation in Swedish healthcare. Based on interviews and documentation, the article illustrates the various perspectives of the different professions involved in the complex task of setting the requirement specification for the tender. The technology identities of the medical device (innovation) are constructed and negotiated by the actors: procurement administrators, health-care professionals and suppliers within the adoption space. Examining the enactment of the procurement process as part of the adoption space is a way to deepen our understanding of the social component within public procurement.

  • Leveraging networks, capabilities and opportunities for international success : A study on returnee entrepreneurial ventures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 34:1, s. 51-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By integrating social capital theory with a capability-based view on performance, this paper aims to examine the extent to which returnee entrepreneurial ventures (REVs) gain international performance advantages from the founding entrepreneurs’ experience with international networks. Using data on 200 Chinese REVs, the paper proposes and tests a structural model with a focus on the link between individual entrepreneurs and the subsequent development of firm capabilities. The results provide evidence that it is important that the returnee entrepreneurs have an international social network for the REV to develop an international network capability, which, in turn, mediates the effects on opportunity knowledge and the international performance of the REVs. The findings highlight the concurrent effect of the role of entrepreneurs and organizational learning in internationalization, and they provide an understanding as to the importance of the returnee-specific advantages for the international performance of these firms.
