  • Entrepreneurship as an art of subversion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 30:1, s. 124-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes subversion and resistance as two fundamental aspects of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial process. Taking a start in the established notion of subversive activities in art, we outline their main expressions and consequences in the entrepreneurship setting. We further address the accompanying issue of resistance, and define and illustrate its role in art and the introduction of novel business ideas. Ultimately arriving at the concept of artful entrepreneurship, we suggest the analysis of subversion and resistance as a promising but so far neglected avenue of research in entrepreneurship studies.

  • Accomplish change or causing hesitance – Developing practices in professional service firms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 33:3, s. 185-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scholarly proclaimed truce between professionals and managers in professional service firms (PSFs) is presently being threatened by changes in the business environment, calling for coordination superordinate to the single professions. The issue of managing professionals in PSFs consequently needs to be re-addressed. We do so by using correspondence analysis to explore the interrelatedness between change initiatives and responses to these changes, in an interview-based case study. Our results suggests that managers can successfully change management related practices without particular consideration of the professionals in the firm, but also that professionals can successfully change professional practices in an unassuming and “practice-like” fashion: with actions rather than with words. Managers who wish to change professional practices, however, need to negotiate the content, scope and purpose of the change initiative with the professionals in the firm.

  • Searching for big data : How incumbents explore a possible adoption of big data technologies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 34:2, s. 129-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Big data is often described as a new frontier of IT-enabled competitive advantage. A limited number of exemplary firms have been used recurrently in the big data debate to serve as successful illustrations of what big data technologies can offer. These firms are well-known, data-driven organizations that often, but not always, are born digital companies. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the challenges that many incumbent organizations face when they try to explore a possible adoption of such technologies. This study investigates how incumbents handle such an exploration and what challenges they face. Drawing on a four-year qualitative field study of four large Scandinavian firms, we are able to develop a typology of how incumbents handle the exploration of and resistance to adopting big data technologies. Directly affecting the incumbents' exploration are two aspects that separate the adoption of big data technologies from that of other technologies. First, being an elusive concept, big data technologies can mean different things to different organizations. This makes the technologies difficult to explain before an investing body, while it simultaneously opens up possibilities for creative definitions. Second, big data technologies have a transformative effect on the organization of work in firms. This transformative capability will make managers wary as it might threaten their position in the firm, and it will create ripple effects, transforming other systems besides those directly connected to the technology.

  • Annual general meetings - rituals of closure or ideal speech situations? A dual analysis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 23:2, s. 168-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses one of the cornerstones of corporate governance, namely the annual general meeting (AGM). The paper builds on field material collected from participating in 36 AGMs during the spring of 2004 as well as on literature on corporate governance. Since the amount of research on AGMs is sparse the research question is rather straightforward and formulated as what goes on at an AGM? The analysis of the field material builds on two separate theoretical frameworks: seeing the AGM as a ritual and an ideal speech situation. The paper notes that AGMs show several traces of an ideal speech situation but that they are also repetitive acts in which the actors seek jointly to support the closing of the accounting year.

  • Executive Management in Radical Change – The Case of Karolinska University Hospital Merger
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 27:1, s. 11-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the merger of two Swedish university hospitals, this paper examines top management's work in implementing radical change initiatives. Our case confirms the limitations of the classic top-down approach to radical change in professional organizations. We also identify an important paradox: contrary to contemporary change literature prescription, initial managerial success seems to impair the change process further down the organization. A key finding is that when mergers are used as tools to effect radical change in politically ambiguous environment, management appears to be limited to initiate change and to take the role of the scapegoat due to inherent factors in the change process. By elucidating management's difficult role vis-à-vis multiple stakeholders, this paper contributes to one aspect of managerial agency discourse that is rarely discussed in detail.

  • Qualification as corporate activism : How Swedish apparel retailers attach circular fashion qualities to take-back systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 35:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explains how corporations can develop market-based activities to influence environmental policies. The empirical focus is on how Swedish apparel retailers qualify take-back systems for used clothes and textiles assteps toward creating circular fashion. An analysis of the qualities that retailers attach to take-back systemsshows how qualification helps corporations feature fashion as potentially sustainable and able to develop circularmaterial flows, with the aim to enroll staff, customers, and other stakeholders in new behaviors andpatterns of responsibility. We apply the notion of corporate activism to demonstrate how corporations usequalification to engage in market-based activities with the aim of influencing the regulatory agenda.

  • Leadership, not leaders : On the study of leadership as practices and interactions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:1, s. 77-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we suggest a perspective within leadership research that has an analytical focus on leadership as it is practiced in daily interaction, rather than on individual leaders. We draw upon recent developments in leadership research that emphasize leadership as processes, practices and interactions in formulating basic scientific assumptions of such a perspective. The suggested perspective will enable us to gain new understandings of how leadership activities emerge in social interaction and of how institutionalized notions of leadership are brought into and re-constructed in these same activities. Given this reasoning, we would suggest that the empirical study of leadership should be based in a process ontology, focused on leadership practices as constructed in interactions.
