  • Global technology development by colocating R&D and manufacturing: The Case of Swedish manufacturing MNEs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 26:1, s. 149-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we analyze the role of colocation between research and development (R&D) and manufacturing for global technology development by multinational enterprises (MNEs). The extant literature suggests that the main strategic role of colocated R&D units is to locally adapt existing products and processes. However, data from 146 foreign R&D units of Sweden’s 17 largest manufacturing MNEs in 2013 show that they instead mainly develop new technology, not only for the local and regional markets, but to a large extent for the global market. A likely explanation is that colocation positively contributes to joint problem-solving and transfer of tacit knowledge between production and R&D personnel, all of which is necessary in new product development, especially in industries characterized by complex products and systems and rapid technological change. A theoretical implication is that depending on industry characteristics, internal cross-functional linkages between R&D and manufacturing can be more critical than external supply- and demand-side factors when it comes to influence where R&D units are located globally.

  • Transforming the Energy Sector : The evolution of technological systems in renewable energy technology
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 13:5, s. 815-849
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses the development and diffusion of technologies that utilize renewable energy sources in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. The analysis enlarges the life cycle model of industry evolution to one where the focus is on the formation and evolution of new technological systems. Particular focus is on explaining success and failures in shifting from a formative phase into one characterized by positive feedbacks. A set of challenges is identified for policy makers attempting to influence the process of transforming the energy sector.

  • When soft budget constraints promote innovation : Kornai meets Schumpeter in Japan
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 29:6, s. 1415-1430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article examines Janos Kornai's influential argument that soft budget constraints impede innovation, and finds that under certain conditions, they may promote it instead. Kornai's concept is derived from his analysis of socialism. In capitalism, soft budget constraints can promote innovation if competition is enforced and finance is well regulated. This argument is developed using the same Schumpeterian foundation as Kornai, illustrated empirically with the case of innovation in post-war Japan. Implications are relevant for innovation and industrial policy in general.

  • Match & Manage : The use of knowledge matching and project management to integrate knowledge in collaborative inbound open innovation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 25:2, s. 333-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite mounting evidence on the potential benefits of inbound open innovation, little is known about how firms purposefully manage inflows of knowledge. We investigate the use of two knowledge governance procedures—project management and knowledge matching—in collaborative inbound open innovation. Our findings suggest that, in addition to “knowledge-precursors,” which the literature on open innovation and absorptive capacity has shown to be important for the integration of external knowledge, the firm’s choice of knowledge governance matters for innovation performance.

  • New hires, adjustment costs, and knowledge transfer-evidence from the mobility of entrepreneurs and skills on firm productivity
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 33:3, s. 712-737
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper evaluates the productivity impacts and the subsequent adjustment costs associated with hiring different knowledge workers. I focus on the difference between hiring former entrepreneurs, employees who change jobs, and unemployed individuals. I am the first to evaluate the direct impact that hiring former entrepreneurs has on firm productivity and the heterogenous adjustment costs associated with the different types of new hires. I find no difference between the first-year adjustment costs of entrepreneurs and those of regular-wage employees. Hiring former entrepreneurs is a way to increase productivity after the first year of employment only if the former entrepreneurs are from the highest end of the ability distribution.

  • Sectoral systems of innovation in the era of the fourth industrial revolution : An introduction to the special section
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 30:1, s. 123-135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sectoral system framework has been adopted to study innovation and industrial dynamics in a widerange of sectors. However, recent development of the so-called “fourth industrial revolution” technolo-gies, such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, additive manufacturing, advanced robotics, Internetof Things, smartphones, and autonomous vehicles, has been blurring the boundaries of existing sectors, bringing both opportunities and challenges for sectoral systems research. In this introductory essay, wefirst provide a quick review on the sectoral systems of innovation literature, clarifying some conceptualand methodological issues. Then, we discuss how the fourth industrial revolution might reshape sectoralsystems along three different dimensions (i.e. technological, market, and policy dimensions). Finally, weintroduce articles in this special section and call for future research on this intriguing topic.

  • Replacing old routines : how Ericsson software developers and managers learned to become agile
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 26:4, s. 571-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our account of the successful transformation of a software development unit at Ericsson, we show how a combination of trial-and-error learning processes, operating at the management and employee levels, can bring about routine change. In developing this explanation, we refer to the off-line/online search dichotomy as a basic way of distinguishing between how routines are tried out at management and employee levels. Furthermore, we suggest a way in which the performative view of routines can be linked to the teleological and life cycle modes of change at the level of management and employees, respectively. As a result, we arrive at a view of routines as both “inherently changeable” and directional and suggest how the combined use of managerial- and employee-level processes makes it possible to gain the benefits associated with each of them, while at the same time mitigating the effects of their shortcomings.

  • From CoPS to mass production? Capabilities and innovation in power generation equipment manufacturing
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 14:1, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a case study of small, distributed electrical power generators, representing a potential substitute for large power plants, and raises questions regarding the ability of established manufacturers to manage this kind of technological transition. The analysis demonstrates that the step from experimental R&D to commercial production is particularly difficult for the incumbents. This observation is explained by showing that whereas manufacturing of large power plants rests upon extensive systems integration capabilities, distributed generators are based on a 'plug-and-play' logic. © ICC Association 2005, all rights reserved.

  • An evolutionary model of innovation policy: conceptualizing the growth of knowledge in innovation policy as an evolution of policy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 27:5, s. 851-865
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our purpose is to propose a conceptual model of the growth of knowledge in innovation policy making. We explicitly draw upon evolutionary economics to conceptualize learning as an evolutionary process of the growth of knowledge about policy problems and their solutions. Our model points to the central role of the variation and selective retention of policy alternatives and contributes to the current debate about how to build capacity through and for mission-oriented innovation policies, to address grand social challenges. © The Author(s) 2018. • Local multipliers and human capital in the United States and Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 22:1, s. 339-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that every time a local economy generates a new job by attracting a new business in the traded sector, a significant number of additional jobs are created in the non-traded sector. This multiplier effect is particularly large for jobs with high levels of human capital and for high-technology industries. These findings are important for local development policies, as they suggest that to increase local employment levels, municipalities should target high-technology employers with high levels of human capital.
