  • Mosquitoborne Sindbis Virus Infection and Long-Term Illness
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 24:6, s. 1141-1142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An unexpected human outbreak of the mosquitoborne Sindbis virus occurred in a previously nonendemic area of Sweden. At follow-up, 6-8 months after infection, 39% of patients had chronic arthralgia that affected their daily activities. Vectorborne infections may disseminate rapidly into new areas and cause acute and chronic disease.

  • Phylogeography of Francisella tularensis subsp holarctica, Europe
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - Atlanta : Centers Disease Control. - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 18:2, s. 290-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica isolates from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Romania were placed into an existing phylogeographic framework. Isolates from Italy were assigned to phylogenetic group B.FTNF002-00; the other isolates, to group B.13. Most F tularensis subsp. holarctica isolates from Europe belong to these 2 geographically segregated groups.

  • Replication in Human Intestinal Enteroids of Infectious Norovirus from Vomit Samples
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 27:8, s. 2212-2214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A typical clinical symptom of human norovirus infection is projectile vomiting. Although norovirus RNA and viral particles have been detected in vomitus, infectivity has not yet been reported. We detected replication-competent norovirus in 25% of vomit samples with a 13-fold to 714-fold increase in genomic equivalents, confirming infectious norovirus.

  • Surveillance and analysis of avian influenza viruses, Australia
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 16:12, s. 1896-1904
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated carriage of avian influenza viruses by wild birds in Australia, 2005-2008, to assess the risks to poultry industries and human health. We collected 21,858 (7,357 cloacal, 14,501 fecal) samples and detected 300 viruses, representing a detection rate of ≈1.4%. Rates were highest in autumn (March-May) and differed substantially between bird types, areas, and years. We typed 107 avian influenza viruses and identified 19 H5, 8 H7, and 16 H9 (40% of typed viruses). All were of low pathogenicity. These viruses formed clearly different phylogenetic clades to lineages from Eurasia or North America, suggesting the potential existence of Australian lineages. H7 viruses were similar to highly pathogenic H7 strains that caused outbreaks in poultry in Australia. Several periods of increased detection rates (numbers or subtypes of viruses) were identified. This study demonstrates the need for ongoing surveillance to detect emerging pathogenic strains and facilitate prevention of outbreaks.

  • Antimicrobial Drug-Resistant Escherichia coli in Wild Birds and Free-range Poultry, Bangladesh
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 18:12, s. 2055-2058
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multidrug resistance was found in 22.7% of Escherichia coli isolates from bird samples in Bangladesh; 30% produced extended-spectrum β-lactamases, including clones of CTX-M genes among wild and domestic birds. Unrestricted use of antimicrobial drugs in feed for domestic birds and the spread of resistance genes to the large bird reservoir in Bangladesh are growing problems.
