  • Doing resistance : youth and changing theories of resistance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Routledge: Taylor and Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 15:8, s. 1078-1088
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to investigate and analyze changing conceptions of resistance within youth research. Through a careful selection of influential and paradigmatic texts, we follow the development of the concept from the 1970s until today. In particular, we have focused on how the relation between power and resistance is described and portrayed in different theories and empirical studies. This article also takes up questions of social and cultural change, the limitations of social reproduction theories, and the conceptual possibilities of theorizing resistance in contemporary studies on youth, power, and resistance.

  • Adolescent girls' and boys' perceptions of mental health
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 10:2, s. 183-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this study are to analyse the concept of mental health from the perspective of adolescent girls and boys and to describe what adolescent girls and boys regard as important determinants of mental health. Interviews with 48 children, 13 and 16 years old, in Sweden were held individually or in focus groups. The adolescents perceived mental health as an emotional experience, where positive as well as negative health is part of the concept. Family is the most important determinant for young people's mental health, closely followed by friends. Neither girls nor boys believed that there were any large differences in mental health between girls and boys. Age differences seemed to be more important than gender in the perception of mental health by children.

  • Youth using national symbols in constructing identities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 17:3, s. 308-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artefacts containing national or ethnic symbols, such as flags and maps, are frequently used by 14-year-old youth in a multiethnic, suburban municipality in Stockholm. Appearing as ornaments or trinkets to outsiders, to the initiated they are distinctive group markers displaying multiple political and ideological affiliations. As visual symbols these artefacts invoke communicative, but non-verbal, processes: they interpellate viewers who answer with their reactions. Thus these objects serve to both banally reproduce nationalism and ethnicity and to serve as identity markers. These identities are primarily inclusive and non-aggressive. The symbols do not seem to be a sign of resistance to mainstream Swedish society in line with much work in the field of youth culture. Instead, they are used as a proud, visual display of additional identities complementing a Swedish identity. Ethnicity research often covers linguistic markers or ethnic and national identities. In contrast, the area of youth consumption of nationalism, in the form of objects featuring national, ethnic and religious symbols, is as yet not well documented. Based on a year-long fieldwork in a junior high school, this paper documents ways in which minority group students handle material artefacts and what these symbols involved mean to them.

  • Traditional versus experimental pathways to university: Educational aspirations among young Swedes with and without an immigrant background
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-9680 .- 1367-6261. ; 22:7, s. 891-906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the different ways in which young people with and without an immigrant background, who have in common that they aspire for a higher education, picture their nearest future. We distinguish between two major pathways to a university education: a traditional pathway (direct transition from upper secondary school to university) and an experimental pathway (where university plans are mixed with other plans, such as work and travel). Data come from a school survey of 685 final-year students in 10 upper secondary schools in Malmö, the third biggest metropolitan area in Sweden. We find that it is much more common among youth with an immigrant background to plan for a traditional pathway, compared to youth of Swedish background who instead are more inclined to plan for experimentation. This difference remains when controlling for factors related to school performance and parental socioeconomic background.

  • Putting on an act : learning service behaviour in young women’s vocational education and training for hospitality work
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Young people training for work in the hospitality industry learn that the occupation involves taking on a role in order to handle the emotional demands of guests. This article, based on Hochschild’s theory of emotional labour, focuses on young women’s experiences in the Swedish vocational education and training for the hospitality industry. The aim of the study is to analyse and critically examine ideas about good service such as putting on an act and how this role-play is shaped by gender. The data are derived from focus group interviews with 52 young women in hospitality training programmes. In these programmes, service behaviour ideas about what constitutes good service in terms of subordination, femininity and heterosexuality are normalised. The young women do not unreflectively absorb the conditions that service work entails. However, the education gives them little opportunity to gain knowledge about societal gender order and the possibility of understanding their life with that insight. One conclusion is that service behaviour in the form of putting on an act that students learn in vocational education and training is problematic, as it reinforces power hierarchies and leaves young women to single-handedly manage problems that arise in service work.

  • Responses to youth intimate partner violence : the meaning of youth-specific factors and interconnections with resilience
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 23:3, s. 371-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking its starting point in a mixed methods study on Dating Violence/Youth Intimate Partner Violence (youth IPV), this article emphasizes the social sphere of youth IPV and contributes to a focus shift from consequences and risks to responses, resilience, and resistance. It asks how IPV-exposed youth describe their responses and those of their social networks to violence, and how these responses might be interconnected with resilience. By exploring the concepts of ‘resistance’ and ‘paradoxical resilience’, youth responses in the context of an abusive relationship are highlighted. The empirical data comes from 18 in-depth, ‘teller focused’ interviews with victimized youth (aged 17–23) in Sweden. A theoretical thematic analysis of the interviews surfaced responses from three different types of actors, all described from the youth perspective. Responses are discussed from the point of view that they can promote resilience, but also enable abuse to continue. Overall, the data show youth-specific factors that have meaningful bearing on responses as well as resilience. The article also proposes that responses should be an omnipresent concern for practitioners working with these young people and for the adults involved in their lives.

  • Mental health in young Australians : A longitudinal study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 19:1, s. 74-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses patterns in mental health of young Australians from age 19 through 25 and explores changes in mental health over these years. Data are derived from five waves of the Australian Life Patterns longitudinal study. The outcome variable in focus was self-reported mental health. Analyses were conducted in two steps using linear mixed models with both fixed and random effects. The analysis shows a negative linear trend in mental health status. The mental health of women was worse than that of men though a negative trend was found in both men and women. Though high socio-economic status (SES) individuals reported best mental health compared to their mid and low-SES peers, a negative trend was identified for them as well as for mid-SES participants. There is weak support for a negative trend among those of low-SES backgrounds. The study adds to evidence that there is a negative trend in mental health in young Australians but that this trend is not uniform across all young people. In light of this we argue the need for further research that analyses patterns of poor mental health in relation to social systems and institutions.

  • Cross-national Analysis of Legislation, Policy and Service Frameworks for Adolescent Young Carers in Europe
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 25:9, s. 1215-1235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite some national examinations of policy responses for young carers (YCs), this study provides a first comprehensive cross-national comparison of the different legislation, policy and service frameworks that exist to protect and support adolescent young carers (AYCs) in six European countries (Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom) and how these are enacted. Until now, research has focused on estimating numbers of AYCs and the impact of caring tasks. A preliminary examination of policy responses to YCs was followed by expert interviews. Case study analysis of 25 interviews and a cross-national synthesis were undertaken before incorporating feedback from former YCs. Different responses to YCs were found, ranging from protection and support in policy and legislation and a definition for YCs, to a total lack of recognition and support. Findings highlight the potential to extend existing legislation, policy and service frameworks to include AYCs, and the importance of recognising and raising awareness of YCs. Awareness should be raised at all levels of society for example with professionals in health, social and education sectors and the general public. A definition for YCs is needed, so AYCs can self-identify and AYCs should be recognised as an important target group for policy makers.

  • The 2021 cross-national and comparative classification of in-country awareness and policy responses to ‘young carers’
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 26:5, s. 619-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many children under the age of 18 are drawn into unpaid caring roles because they live in families where there is chronic illness, mental health problems or substance misuse, and because other alternatives are not available. Many of these children, widely referred to as ‘young carers’, provides regular and significant amounts of care, often ‘hidden’ because of the absence of awareness by professionals in the fields of education, health and social care. While there are some positive outcomes for children, published research also shows that children’s caring tasks can have negative outcomes, especially during the transition between school and further/higher education and paid work. This paper presents an overview, cross-national and comparative analysis of the different legislation, policy and service frameworks to support young carers in a number of countries. It utilises a qualitative assessment approach and a 7-point classification to understand the state of development and progress since 2017. While the legislation, policy and service frameworks differ significantly among the observed countries, an international and collaborative research network has emerged in the last five years. This plays a vital role as a driver for increasing the awareness of young carers and further national and cross-national policy developments in the future.
