  • Sustainability in coworking spaces: A study on the coworking member’s perspective
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The sharing economy is a trend that enables people to better utilize underused resources. Coworking spaces are a relatively new concept that falls under the umbrella of the sharing economy and are often regarded as the new model of work. A coworking space is a subscription-based workspace where individuals and teams from different companies work in a shared communal space. As the popularity of coworking increases, researchers have started to focus more on sustainable coworking spaces. Sustainable coworking spaces are still in their infancy and have mostly incorporated the corporate level (i.e., coworking provider) perspective while neglecting the individual level (i.e., coworking members) perspective. Coworking members play an important role when it comes to creating more sustainable coworking spaces as a complement to the provider’s efforts. Since there is an absence of literature that includes the coworking member’s role in creating sustainable coworking spaces, the purpose of this thesis is to attain new knowledge of sustainability in coworking spaces with a specific focus on the coworking member’s perspective. This thesis builds on three scientific papers. The first paper conceptualizes what sustainable coworking behavior is. It defines it as behavior that simultaneously achieves the goals and objectives for the represented organization, benefits other individuals inside the coworking space, and responsibly shares the coworking space. The second paper focuses on developing a new scale for assessing sustainable coworking behavior. The third paper highlights the drivers of sustainable coworking behavior and specifically investigates the relationship between psychological ownership and sustainable coworking behavior. The findings add to the emerging field of coworking spaces through its unique focus on the perspective of the coworking member. From a practical point of view, this thesis can support the way coworking providers manage sustainable coworking spaces where the coworking member’s behavior is considered.

  • Realtime & Development - modes of knowing design computation in architectural practice
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines theoretical, methodological and organisational implications of design computation for architectural practice - from an insider perspective. It also proposes a conceptual model for knowing within this practice, in an approach that interrelates theory and actionable knowledge. Dsearch is a research & development network focused on the introduction of design computation at White arkitekter, a large Scandinavian architectural firm with over 900 employees. The research studies Dsearch from an insider perspective, providing a description and discussion of an organisational entity involved in the paradigmatic shift towards computationally augmented design thinking - design computation - in architectural practice. This entails the introduction of new tools, methods and competencies. This thesis contributes to the knowledge in architectural design computation practice, conceptualising documented methodology so as to establish a deeper theoretical understanding. Reciprocally it provides the wider field of design theory with insights into the problems and methods that occur in design computation in architectural practice. It also proposes a conceptual model for how to attain and share knowledge in an architectural practice augmented by design computation. This model articulates Realtime and Development as two approaches to time that are distinguished by design computation. The model builds on practical experience intertwined with notions from cognitive science, philosophy of the mind, design methodology, action research, and management- and learning-theory.

  • Approaches to particle acceleration in intense laser-matter interaction
  • 2018
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the interaction of ultra-intense laser fields with matter, the target is rapidly ionized and a plasma is formed. The ability of a plasma to sustain acceleration gradients, orders of magnitude larger than achievable with conventional accelerators, has led to a great interest in laser-driven plasma-based particle acceleration and radiation generation, with applications in materials science, biology and medicine. In this thesis we consider laser-driven plasma-based particle acceleration by studying the interaction of intense laser fields with solid density targets. The basics of such interactions are described and some of the most common acceleration schemes are presented. We study the effect of adding microstructures on the illuminated side of a solid target and show how this affects the resulting distribution of hot electrons. Furthermore, we discuss how to achieve controllable ion acceleration through displacement of electrons by standing waves. A recently proposed laser-driven ion acceleration scheme, called chirped-standing-wave acceleration, is introduced and described in detail. Finally, we analyze the robustness of this acceleration scheme under non-ideal conditions and discuss its prospects and limitations.

  • Bond and Anchorage of Ribbed Bars in High-Strength Concrete
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For structural utilisation of high-strength concrete, a good understanding of the bond and anchorage behaviours of ribbed bars in this specific material is essential. The research project aims to increase the knowledge of bond and anchorage behaviours of ribbed bars in high-strength concrete. Furthermore, the validity of the design method in Model Code 1990 aimed for normal strength concrete is investigated. An extensive experimental study was carried out to examine the bond and anchorage behaviour in high-strength concrete compared with that in normal strength concrete. Tests on four types of specimens were conducted. Detail tests and all major anchorage regions (support regions, cut-off regions and splice regions) are treated. For each high-strength concrete specimen tested, a reference specimen of normal strength concrete with the same detailing was also tested. Both simple numerical modelling based on schematic bond stress-slip relationships and more complex non-linear finite element modelling were used to complement the experiments. The study showed that the bond and anchorage behaviours were similar in both concrete types, and governed by the same phenomena. The bond strength in well-confined concrete increased linearly with the concrete compressive strength. Furthermore, high-strength concrete gave a much stiffer local bond stress-slip relationship than normal strength concrete. If the yield capacity of the reinforcing steel was reached, the local bond resistance decreased substantially, especially in high-strength concrete. Schematic local relationships between bond stress and slip are proposed for anchorage in confined normal strength and high-strength concrete; these take into account the bond deterioration when the yield capacity of the reinforcement steel is reached or exceeded. Although the anchorage capacity of a high-strength concrete specimen was higher than that of a comparable normal strength one, the increase was not in proportion to the rise in compressive strength, unlike the local bond strength under well-confined conditions. However, the high-strength concrete showed less capacity for stress redistribution, both along anchorage or lap lengths and between bars anchored in the same region. This can result in premature and brittle failures, unless compensated by a sufficient amount of stirrups. The design method examined usually gave results on the safe side when compared with test results. However, the scatter was large and there was a tendency for the safety to decrease with greater concrete strength.

  • Intense laser-plasma interactions
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the interaction of ultra-intense laser fields with matter, the target is rapidly ionized and a plasma is formed. The ability of a plasma to sustain acceleration gradients, orders of magnitude larger than achievable with conventional accelerators, has led to a great interest in laser-driven plasma-based particle and radiation sources, with applications in materials science, biology and medicine. In this thesis, two separate, yet highly related, topics are pursued. The first half of the thesis concerns plasma-based techniques for ion acceleration, through the interaction of intense laser fields with solid density targets. In the most accessible acceleration scheme, the ion acceleration is mediated by a population of suprathermal, hot , electrons produced by the rapid heating of the target surface. We study the effect of adding microstructures to the target surface, show how this affects the distribution of hot electrons and discuss its implications for ion acceleration. We further study a novel acceleration scheme, aimed at achieving controllable ion acceleration using a frequency chirped standing wave. We analyse the robustness of this scheme, named chirped-standing-wave acceleration, under non-ideal conditions and discuss its prospects and limitations. The second half of the thesis concerns laser-matter interactions where the emission of high-energy photons necessitates a quantum mechanical description of radiation reaction and enables a prolific production of electron-positron pairs. In this regime, we study the interaction of an energetic electron beam with an optimally focused laser field, in the form of a dipole wave, and highlight its capabilities as a multi-GeV photon source. We further discuss the phenomena observed in this setup, in particular investigating the emergence of pair production cascades, and provide a review of previous results. Finally, we highlight a number of regimes within reach of upcoming laser facilities.
