  • Benefits of Joint Statistics in MLSD-Equalized Transmission
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 21:8, s. 495-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally investigate and quantify performance improvement, accounting for multiple bit intervals' joint statistics in filtered equalized on-off keying OC-192 fiber-optic links relying on Viterbi-algorithm-based sequence detection. We demonstrate that the penalty associated with narrow filtering can be alleviated for the most part with an appropriate detection approach.

  • Joint Statistics and MLSD in Filtered Incoherent High-Speed Fiber-Optic Communications
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 28:10, s. 1564-1572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, signal statistics and their utilization for detection in narrowly filtered equalized high-speed fiber-optic communications are investigated experimentally. Tradeoffs between log-likelihood metric applications and oversampling are covered in detail. It is, for the first time, demonstrated that performance loss in bandwidth-limited systems can be nearly fully recovered (to within 0.5 dB) by taking advantage of band-width-limitation-induced noise correlations and oversampling.

  • Self-phase modulation in dispersion compensated optical fibre transmission systems
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - : Elsevier. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 130:1-3, s. 153-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An analysis is made of the influence of self-phase modulation on optical fibre communication systems where the chromatic dispersion is compensated for by a dispersion compensation fibre. In particular we derive a simple and useful expression for the optimal fibre length in the presence of nonlinearities.

  • Wave-breaking-free pulses in nonlinear-optical fibers
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics. - 1520-8540 .- 0740-3224. ; 10:7, s. 1185-1190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A qualitative as well as quantitative investigation is made of the conditions for avoiding wave breaking during pulse propagation in optical fibers. In particular, it is shown that pulses having a parabolic intensity variation are approximate wave-breaking-free solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the high-intensity limit. A simple expression for the compression factor of a fiber-grating compressor based on parabolic pulses is also derived.

  • Fiber-based phase-sensitive optical amplifiers and their applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Optics and Photonics. - 1943-8206. ; 12:2, s. 367-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical parametric amplifiers rely on second-order susceptibility (three-wave mixing) or third-order susceptibility (four-wave mixing) in a nonlinear process where the energy of incoming photons is not changed (elastic scattering). In the latter case, two pump photons are converted to a signal and to an idler photon. Under certain conditions, related to the phase evolution of the waves involved, this conversion can be very effi-cient, resulting in large amplification of an input signal. As the nonlinear process can be very fast, all-optical applications aside from pure amplification are also possible. If the amplifier is implemented in an optical input-phase-sensitive manner, it is possible to amplify a signal wave without excess noise, i.e., with a noise figure of 0 dB. In this paper, we will provide the fundamental concepts and theory of such amplifiers, with a focus on their implementation in highly nonlinear optical fibers relying on four-wave mixing. We will discuss the distinctions between phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive operation and include several experimental results to illustrate their capability. Different applications of parametric amplifiers are also discussed, including their use in optical communication links.

  • Dark soliton pairs in fiber couplers
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018. ; 111:1-2, s. 116-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the possible stationary states formed by pairs of dark solitons propagating in dual-core optical fibers, i.e. in a nonlinear coupler. These are local disturbances on a constant background. We find new dark soliton states, characterize them and show that they differ from the soliton states consisting of coupled bright solitons in several ways. © 1994.

  • Experimental observation of soliton robustness to polarisation dispersion pulse broadening
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 1350-911X .- 0013-5194. ; 35:1, s. 65-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soliton robustness to polarisation dispersion pulse broadening in a 400km installed optical fibre is experimentally demonstrated. With 10ps input pulses and a differential group delay of 7.6ps, the soliton pulsewidth at the receiver is maintained within 10-11ps when the input polarisation is changed, while the corresponding range for dispersion-compensated linear pulses is 10.5-15.5ps.
