  • Healing Architecture: Evidence, Intuition, Dialogue
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In today’s healthcare architecture there is a striving to make better use of evidence to achieve environments that can contribute to patients’ healing, recovery, and well-being. These ideas are in part a legacy of the theory and practice of evidence-based medicine and the success it has enjoyed in its field. However, the volume of evidence in the field of construction is limited, and there is no reason to expect rapid growth anytime soon. This provides some explanation for why evidence alone cannot be expected to lead to healing architecture. But the design qualities for which research has found evidence of improved patient outcomes have long since been assumed and applied by experienced architects. To achieve a healing architecture, architects must embrace—and be allowed to embrace—the tacit knowledge of intuition they have accumulated over time. This intuitive knowledge is the fruit of the direct exchange they have with the surrounding physical environment through their experiences—in everyday life, in education, in professional practice, and so forth. Intuition is personal and subjective, but it is an essential tool in the architect’s work. By establishing a constructive dialogue with healthcare providers, the architect’s sketches, models, and ideas can be exposed to critical evaluation, questioning, and discussion. This minimizes the risk for arbitrarily designed buildings. The dialogue between architect and client organization, facilitated by the architect’s sketches, follows a cyclical pattern of proposal, evaluation, and modification that recurs in one iteration after another. At the same time, the architect and client work together in dialogue about each proposal to articulate and refine the organization’s demands and desires. Each of the participants has practical knowledge that may be hidden even to themselves, and dialogue brings that hidden knowledge to light so it can contribute to new thinking and innovative solutions. A positive side effect is that this process often leads to the development of the client’s own operations and organization. The point of departure for this licentiate thesis is an experienced architect’s critical reflections on his own design practice and extensive reading of research literature in the field. The work can therefore be placed in the tradition of practice-based research in architecture, present in Sweden for many years and currently in strong development internationally. The author’s objective has been to contribute to defining a healing architecture that joins the collaborative culture found in Sweden today with a strong American influence that argues for an architecture based on evidence.

  • It takes more than evidence to inform the healthcare architect
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Architecture for Residential Care and Ageing Communities: Spaces for Dwelling and Healthcare. - New York, NY : Routledge, 2021. : Routledge. ; , s. 213-223
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today’s strong focus on evidence has not changed hospital design in such a revolutionary way as some EBD-proponents had foreseen. Also, other conditions have a crucial impact on successful design and to which we must pay greater attention. One of these is intuition. Some architects succeed better than others in their endeavor to design well-functioning and appreciated buildings. Allowing themselves to be led by their feelings, they acquire “information” to handle the design problems they face. That is why intuition is a tool for innovation and progress, one that precedes science and evidence. The second crucial condition is related to a design-driven dialogue. Design theory describes the idea where both the prerequisites and demands are created at the same time in the making of design proposals: an idea that questions the traditional linear planning ideology. In this way, tacit knowledge, which is a part of every profession, can inform the architect in achieving more complete proposals over time. The main idea is that the knowledge grows through use of different design artefacts. The design-driven dialogue forms a partly new role for the architect. However, today’s experience of this process is limited and is so far rarely the subject of research.

  • Att bygga en stad. Vilka värden ligger bakom?
  • 2011

  • New jobs – new ideas: the relationships between tenure and perceived creative climate.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Human Resource Development International. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-8374 .- 1367-8868. ; 14:5, s. 605-621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human resource development (HRD) practices are intertwined with organisational creative climate (CC), which has received an increasing attention in the HRD literature. From a HRD perspective, understanding the factors that influence CC is important since CC influences not only employees’ possibilities to share and develop ideas, but also potentially employees’ decision to leave their current organisation. This study focuses on how perceptions of CC is related to tenure in organisations by analysing perceived CC in a random sample of unionised Swedish white-collar workers (n=1303). It finds tenure to be negatively related to perceived CC for the first few years of employment. The level of knowledge required for a position does not moderate this relationship, but more knowledge-intensive work in itself tends to be associated with higher levels of perceived CC. Implications for HRD are discussed.

  • Towards a precise measurement of the antihydrogen ground state hyperfine splitting in a beam: the case of in-flight radiative decays
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6455 .- 0953-4075. ; 48:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ASACUSA antihydrogen setup at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator (AD) consists of an antihydrogen source (cusp magnet coupled to a positron source and an antiproton catching magnet) followed by a spectrometer beamline. After production in the cusp, the antihydrogen atoms decay while they escape the trap leading to changes in their effective magnetic moment which in turn affect their trajectories in the beamline. Those sequential decays in the presence of a varying magnetic field strength from their production point in the cusp to their detection at the end of the spectrometer line can in principle greatly affect the prospects for a precision measurement of the antihydrogen hyperfine splitting given the so-far relatively low number of available anti-atoms. The impact of the antihydrogen decay in this context has for the first time been simulated. The implementation of atomic radiative decay has been done in Geant4 to extend the particle tracking capabilities originally embedded in Geant4 to excited atoms, and to allow studies of the effect of dynamic atomic properties on trajectories. This new tool thus allows the study of particle-matter interaction via the Geant4 toolkit while properly taking into account the atomic nature of the object under study. The implementation as well as impacts on the experimental sensitivity for antihydrogen spectroscopy are discussed in this paper.

  • Tunneling theory for tunable open quantum systems of ultracold atoms in one-dimensional traps
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 2469-9926 .- 2469-9934. ; 91:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The creation of tunable open quantum systems is becoming feasible in current experiments with ultracold atoms in low-dimensional traps. In particular, the high degree of experimental control over these systems allows detailed studies of tunneling dynamics, e.g., as a function of the trapping geometry and the interparticle interaction strength. In order to address this exciting opportunity we present a theoretical framework for two-body tunneling based on the rigged Hilbert space formulation. In this approach, bound, resonant, and scattering states are included on an equal footing and we argue that the coupling of all these components is vital for a correct description of the relevant threshold phenomena. In particular, we study the tunneling mechanism for two-body systems in one-dimensional traps and different interaction regimes. We find a strong dominance of sequential tunneling of single particles for repulsive and weakly attractive systems, while there is a signature of correlated pair tunneling in the calculated many-particle flux for strongly attractive interparticle interaction.

  • Application of 3-D Computation of Magnetic Fields to the Design of Claw-Pole Motors
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main advantage of claw-pole machines lies in their ability to yield higher torque density values than is obtainable from a conventional machine. However, the high torque density has its price; leakage flux is often high resulting in low power factor and efficiency. This thesis is mainly concerned with the design of a claw-pole motor that meets application requirements of reasonably high torque density and a power factor comparable to conventional topologies. After critically reviewing previously proposed designs of Transverse-flux and Claw-pole machines, the thesis focuses on a special type of claw pole motor having claws in both the stator and the rotor. The claws are made of Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC); consisting of iron powder particles that are individually insulated and can be readily pressed into complex geometries. Detailed explanation of the operation of such a design is then provided.Internal design of the claw-pole motor is investigated with the aid of three-dimensional finite-element field computation. In particular, the effect of the following parameters on the motor's performance has been investigated: number of poles, main dimensions, magnet material and dimensions, pole-face profile and claw angle. This theoretical work was verified, to some extent, against measurements obtained from an experimental machine especially constructed for this purpose. Details of this experimental motor are also presented. The investigation of the internal design of the claw-pole motors presented in this thesis provides a physical insight into their operation and, therefore, can be utilised for their general design. Indeed, this work enabled realisation of a claw-pole servomotor that is capable of achieving a torque density of about 1.5 Nm/Kg at a power factor of 0.9. The decisions made in arriving at the servomotor design are presented and clearly related to the conclusions of the internal design investigation.
