  • Match activities of elite women soccer players at different performance levels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. - : Wolters Kluwer. - 1064-8011 .- 1533-4287. ; 22:2, s. 341-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sought to study the physical demands and match performance of women soccer players. Nineteen top-class and 15 high-level players were individually videotaped in competitive matches, and time-motion analysis were performed. The players changed locomotor activity >1,300 times in a game corresponding to every ~4 seconds and covered 9-11 km in total. The top-class players ran 28% longer (P < 0.05) at high intensities than high-level players (1.68 +/- 0.09 and 1.33 +/- 0.10 km, respectively) and sprinted 24% longer (P < 0.05). The top-class group had a decrease (P < 0.05) of 25-57% in high intensity running in the final 15 minutes compared with the first four 15-minutes intervals, whereas the high-level group performed less (P < 0.05) high-intensity running in the last 15 minutes of each half in comparison with the 2 previous 15-minute periods in the respective half. Peak distance covered by high intensity running in a 5-minute interval was 33% longer (P < 0.05) for the top-class players than the high-level players. In the following 5 minutes immediately after the peak interval top-class players covered 17% less (P < 0.05) high-intensity running than the game average. Defenders performed fewer (P < 0.05) intervals of high-intensity running than midfielders and attackers, as well as fewer (P < 0.05) sprints than the attackers. In conclusion, for women soccer players (1) top-class international players perform more intervals of high-intensity running than elite players at a lower level, (2) fatigue develops temporarily during and towards the end of a game, and (3) defenders have lower work rates than midfielders and attackers. The difference in high-intensity running between the 2 levels demonstrates the importance of intense intermittent exercise for match performance in women soccer. Thus, these aspects should be trained intensively in women soccer.

  • Emotion dysregulation, self-image and eating disorder symptoms in University Women
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Eating Disorders. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 2050-2974. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: We studied associations between emotion dysregulation, self-image and eating disorder (ED)symptoms in university women, and contrasted two indirect effect models to examine possible interveningmechanisms to produce ED symptoms. Methods: 252 female Swedish university students completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(DERS), the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) self-image measure, and the Eating DisorderExamination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). Correlations between scales were followed by five simple mediationanalysis pairs with two possible pathways using five ED symptom variables as outcome. The models positedeither self-image or emotion dysregulation as mediator or independent variable, respectively. ED symptomswere EDE-Q Global score, objective binge eating episodes (OBE), subjective binge eating episodes (SBE), andtwo variants of EDE-Q excessive exercise. Results: Emotion dysregulation and self-image were strongly correlated, and both correlated moderately withEDE-Q Global score. There were distinct indirect effects through self-image on the relationship between emotiondysregulation and ED symptoms, but not vice versa. These indirect effects were evident in relation to cognitive EDsymptoms and both OBE and SBE, but not in relation to excessive exercise. Conclusions: Results suggest that even if closely related, emotion dysregulation and self-image both contributeunique knowledge in relation to ED symptoms. Self-image as an intervening mechanism between emotiondysregulation and ED symptoms is relevant for models of the development, maintenance and treatment of ED, as wellas treatment focus.

  • Running on empty : a nationwide large-scale examination of compulsive exercise in eating disorders
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of eating disorders. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 2050-2974. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Compulsive exercise (CE) has been the neglected "Cinderella" among eating disorder (ED) symptoms, even though it seems to impact severity, treatment and outcome. This prompted a large-scale and systematic examination of the impact of CE in a representative ED sample.METHODS: CE was examined in over 9000 female and male patients from a clinical ED database (covering out-patient, day and/or residential treatment) with respect to prevalence, ED diagnosis, ED symptoms, clinical features, patient characteristics, and outcome at 1-year follow-up. Relationships between changes in CE behavior and remission were also examined.RESULTS: CE was a transdiagnostic symptom, present in nearly half of all patients (48%). It was associated with greater overall ED pathology, particularly dietary restraint, and negative perfectionism. Initial CE did not impact remission rate, but patients continuing or starting CE during treatment had considerably lower remission rates compared to patients who never engaged in, or ceased with, CE. Results were comparable for females and males.CONCLUSIONS: At baseline, there were few differences between patients with and without CE, except a somewhat higher symptom load for patients with CE, and CE did not predict ED outcome. However, how CE developed during treatment to 1-year follow-up considerably impacted remission rates. We strongly recommend CE to be systematically assessed, addressed, and continuously evaluated in all ED patients seeking treatment.

  • Taking the LEAP : study protocol for a randomized, multicentre, naturalistic, efficacy trial of the compuLsive Exercise Activity theraPy (LEAP) - a cognitive behavioral program specifically targeting compulsive exercise in patients with eating disorders
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychiatry. - : BMC. - 1471-244X. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background About half of Swedish eating disorder patients report exercising compulsively and compulsive exercise (CE) is prevalent in all diagnoses and both genders. Yet there are no systematic treatments targeting CE in specialist care. This study aims to evaluate the effects of The CompuLsive Exercise Activity TheraPy (LEAP) - a promising group treatment targeting compulsive exercise, in Swedish eating disorder patients. Method One hundred twenty-eight adult females and males suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or other specified feeding and eating disorders (type 1, 2, or 4) with CE will be recruited via four specialist eating disorder treatment units. Participants will be randomized to receive treatment as usual (control group) or treatment as usual plus LEAP (intervention group). The groups will be assessed on key variables (e.g., BMI, eating disorder symptoms, exercise cognitions and behaviors) at three occasions: initially, after 3 months and after 6 months. Discussion The project takes place in a clinical setting, including both male and female patients with different eating disorder diagnoses with CE, enabling a good indication of the efficacy of LEAP. If our results are positive, LEAP has the potential of benefiting about half of the eating disorder population, with remission and recovery hopefully improving as a result.

  • Blood Pressure-Lowering Effect of Orally Ingested Nitrite Is Abolished by a Proton Pump Inhibitor.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Hypertension. - 0194-911X .- 1524-4563. ; 69:1, s. 23-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inorganic nitrate and nitrite from dietary and endogenous sources are metabolized to NO and other bioactive nitrogen oxides that affect blood pressure. The mechanisms for nitrite bioactivation are unclear, but recent studies in rodents suggest that gastric acidity may influence the systemic effects of this anion. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, we tested the effects of a proton pump inhibitor on the acute cardiovascular effects of nitrite. Fifteen healthy nonsmoking, normotensive subjects, aged 19 to 39 years, were pretreated with placebo or esomeprazole (3×40 mg) before ingesting sodium nitrite (0.3 mg kg(-1)), followed by blood pressure monitoring. Nitrite reduced systolic blood pressure by a maximum of 6±1.3 mm Hg when taken after placebo, whereas pretreatment with esomeprazole blunted this effect. Peak plasma nitrite, nitrate, and nitroso species levels after nitrite ingestion were similar in both interventions. In 8 healthy volunteers, we then infused increasing doses of sodium nitrite (1, 10, and 30 nmol kg(-1) min(-1)) intravenously. Interestingly, although plasma nitrite peaked at similar levels as with orally ingested nitrite (≈1.8 µmol/L), no changes in blood pressure were observed. In rodents, esomeprazole did not affect the blood pressure response to the NO donor, DEA NONOate, or vascular relaxation to nitroprusside and acetylcholine, demonstrating an intact downstream NO-signaling pathway. We conclude that the acute blood pressure-lowering effect of nitrite requires an acidic gastric environment. Future studies will reveal if the cardiovascular complications associated with the use of proton pump inhibitors are linked to interference with the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway.

  • The prolonged inclusion of roma groups in swedish society
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Social Inclusion. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-2803. ; 3:5, s. 126-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusion policies focusing on Roma groups started in Sweden during the 1950s, when the Swedish government recognized the formal citizen status of the so called “Swedish Gypsies”, a group consisting of approximately 740 people. As the Roma were perceived as people living outside the boundaries of normal society, the challenge facing the Swedish authorities was how to outline and organize the new policies. In our analyses we focus on the taken-for-granted premises of these policies. We discuss the “entry process” of these Roma into Swedish society. People-processing organizations classified Roma as “socially disabled” in different administrative contexts. In the early 1960s adult male Roma were classified as socially disabled on the labor market. Later during the same decade, experts and professionals increasingly focused attention on the Roma family as a problematic institution. In this context, Roma adults were classified as disabled in relation to the normative representations of parental capacities during that time, while Roma children of school age were defined as children with difficulties and put in special groups for children with problems. The related interventions were justified by a discourse on social inclusion, but in reality produced a web of measures, practices and yet further interventions, which in the long run have contributed to perpetuate the social marginality of Roma groups.

  • Dietary nitrite extends lifespan and prevents age-related locomotor decline in the fruit fly
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Free Radical Biology & Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0891-5849 .- 1873-4596. ; 160, s. 860-870
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aging is associated with decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and signalling. Boosting of a dietary nitrate nitrite-NO pathway e.g. by ingestion of leafy green vegetables, improves cardiometabolic function, mitochondrial efficiency and reduces oxidative stress in humans and rodents, making dietary nitrate and nitrite an appealing intervention to address age-related disorders. On the other hand, these anions have long been implicated in detrimental health effects of our diet, particularly in formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. The aim of this study was to assess whether inorganic nitrite affects lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and investigate possible mechanisms underlying any such effect. In a survival assay, female flies fed a nitrite supplemented diet showed lifespan extension by 9 and 15% with 0.1 and 1 mu M nitrite respectively, with no impact of nitrite on reproductive output. Interestingly, nitrite could also protect female flies from age-dependent locomotor decline, indicating a protective effect on healthspan. NO generation from nitrite involved Drosophila commensal bacteria and was indicated by a fluorescent probe as well as direct measurements of NO gas formation with chemiluminescence.Nutrient sensing pathways such as TOR and sirtuins, have been strongly implicated in lifespan extension. In aged flies, nitrite supplementation significantly downregulated dTOR and upregulated dSir2 gene expression. Total triglycerides and glucose were decreased, a described downstream effect of both TOR and sirtuin pathways. In conclusion, we demonstrate that very low doses of dietary nitrite extend lifespan and favour healthspan in female flies. We propose modulation of nutrient sensing pathways as driving mechanisms for such effects.
