    • This paper suggests a quantitative approach to security, and specifically to a security-concept, which is regarded as an attribute of dependability together with reliability, availability and safety. We note that security is a more complex attribute of dependability than are the other three, and that it can therefore be split into preventive and behavioural aspects. We show that, in addition to availability, confidentiality could be used to denote a new type of behavioural aspect of dependability. Integrity is interpreted in terms of fault prevention, and is not directly related to system behaviour. A practical measure for behavioural dependability attributes including confidentiality is defined. Due to the dependability viewpoint of security that we take, a measure could be derived using traditional reliability methods, such as Markov modelling. The measure is meant for practical trade-offs within a class of computer systems. The measure quantifies system performance on user-specified service levels, which may be operational or failed. Certain levels may be related to confidentiality degradations or confidentiality failures. A simple Reference Monitor example is given to illustrate the use of the measure. The calculation method is then extended to handle situations with non–exponential failure rates, which is the normal case in security applications, by means of using phase–type modelling. This is illustrated by introducing malicious software, such as a Trojan Horse into the Reference Monitor.

    • The prevalence of allergy is markedly low in children growing up on farms. An increasing number of studies indicate that the timing of food introduction may affect allergy development. We aimed to investigate if protection against allergy in farm environments may be mediated through differences in food-introduction practices between farm and non-farm families, using an explorative approach. Twenty-eight farm and 37 non-farm children were included in the FARMFLORA birth cohort. Practices of breastfeeding and introduction of formulas and complementary foods were collected by questionnaires at 6, 12, and 18 months of age. Allergy was diagnosed by pediatricians at 3 years of age. The only difference in food-introduction practices observed between farm and non-farm children was an earlier introduction of nuts in farmers (median month: 11 [IQR: 8-6] in farmers, 15 [12-19] in non-farmers). One farm child (4%) and 10 non-farm children (27%) were allergic at 3 years of age. Lower risk of allergy development was associated with early exclusive breastfeeding (continuous variable; OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.39-0.89), but also having received eggs (OR = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.13-0.54) and fish (logistic regression not applicable, P = 0.01 in likelihood ratio testing [chi(2)]) at 10 months of age or earlier compared to later. Our results were not affected by reverse causation, as judged by a questionnaire sent to the families in retrospect. Timing of introduction of complementary foods is unlikely to contribute to the lower risk of allergy among farm children. Although early exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a lower rate of allergy development, postponed introduction of complementary foods might increase the risk of developing allergy. Owing to the limited sample size, our results are only indicative, but support prior findings.

    • We study canonical heights for plane polynomial mappings of small topological degree. In particular, we prove that for points of canonical height zero, the arithmetic degree is bounded by the topological degree and hence strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree. The proof uses the existence, proved by Favre and the first author, of certain compactifications of the plane adapted to the dynamics.

    • We investigate theoretically the occurrence of ‘shuttle-like’ electromechanical instabilities in systems where charge transfer processes interact with several mechanical degrees of freedom simultaneously. In particular we consider the excitation of the multiple bending modes of a suspended carbon nanotube (CNT) due to the injection of current from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) into the suspended part of the tube. With respect to the shuttle instability, we show that the different bending modes can be treated independently in the limit of weak electromechanical coupling. As a result one or more modes—depending on the strength of the tunnel coupling between the CNT and the STM-tip—can be unstable.We find that it is possible to selectively excite a specific mode by tuning the distance between the STM-tip and the CNT. Furthermore, we have investigated the stable (limit cycle) regime that develops as a result of the shuttle instability when only one bending mode is unstable.

    • We investigate theoretically multimode electromechanical "shuttle" instabilities in dc voltage-biased nanoelectromechanical single-electron tunneling devices. We show that initially irregular (quasiperiodic) oscillations that occur as a result of the simultaneous self-excitation of several mechanical modes with incommensurable frequencies self-organize into periodic oscillations with a frequency corresponding to the eigenfrequency of one of the unstable modes. This effect demonstrates that a local probe can selectively excite global vibrations of extended objects.

    • A monomial (i.e. equivariant) selfmap of a toric variety is called stable if its action on the Picard group commutes with iteration. Generalizing work of Favre to higher dimensions, we show that under suitable conditions, a monomial map can be made stable by refining the underlying fan. In general, the resulting toric variety has quotient singularities; in dimension two we give criteria for when it can be chosen smooth, as well as examples when it cannot.
