  • Characterisation of silicon, zirconium and aluminium coated titanium dioxide pigments recovered from paint waste
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dyes and Pigments. - : Elsevier BV. - 0143-7208 .- 1873-3743. ; 162, s. 145-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 Elsevier Ltd Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the major white pigment used by the paint industry. However, the production of TiO2is associated with a high carbon footprint. An alternative source of pigment could be created by developing a method to recover it from waste paint. In this paper two rutile pigments with different surface treatments were recovered from paint by a thermal recycling process. The pigments were analysed using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface area measurements (BET), laser diffraction for particle size analysis and zeta potential measurements before and after the recycling process. It was concluded that the rutile cores of both pigments were intact and there were no major changes in particle size distribution or surface charge for either pigment induced by the recycling process. However, XPS and zeta potential measurements showed that the surface coating of the pigments can be more or less degraded depending on the chemical nature, which might imply the need for further re-coating after-treatment. Another option would be to find another application for the pigment where the quality and function of the coating is of less importance.

  • Development and implementation of Mobility-as-a-Service : A qualitative study of barriers and enabling factors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research, Part A: Policy and Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 0965-8564 .- 1879-2375. ; 131, s. 283-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) has been argued as part of the solution to prevalent transport problems. However, progress from pilots to large-scale implementation has hitherto been slow. The aim of the research reported in this paper was to empirically and in-depth investigate how, and to what extent, different factors affect the development and implementation of MaaS. A framework was developed, with a basis in institutional theory and the postulation that formal as well informal factors on different analytical levels (macro, meso and micro) must be considered. The research was organised as a multiple case study in Finland and Sweden and a qualitative approach was chosen for data collection and analysis. A number of factors with a claimed impact on the development and implementation of MaaS was revealed. At the macro level, these factors included legislation concerning transport, innovation and public administration, and the presence (or not) of a shared vision for MaaS. At the meso level, (the lack of) appropriate business models, cultures of collaboration, and assumed roles and responsibilities within the MaaS ecosystem were identified as significant factors. At the micro level, people’s attitudes and habits were recognised as important factors to be considered. However, how the ‘S’ in MaaS fits (or not) the transport needs of the individual/household appears to play a more important role in adoption or rejection of MaaS than what has often been acknowledged in previous papers on MaaS. The findings presented in this paper provide several implications for public and private sector actors. Law-making authorities can facilitate MaaS developments by adjusting relevant regulations and policies such as transport-related subsidies, taxation policies and the definition of public transport. Regional and local authorities could additionally contribute to creating conducive conditions for MaaS by, for example, planning urban designs and transport infrastructures to support service-based travelling. Moreover, private actors have key roles to play in future MaaS developments, as both public and private transport services are needed if MaaS is to become a viable alternative to privately owned cars. Thus, the advance of MaaS business models that benefit all involved actors is vital for the prosperity of the emerging MaaS ecosystem.

  • Formation of geometrically complex lipid nanotube-vesicle networks of higher-order topologies
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the United States of America. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 99:18, s. 11573-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a microelectrofusion method for construction of fluid-state lipid bilayer networks of high geometrical complexity up to fully connected networks with genus = 3 topology. Within networks, self-organizing branching nanotube architectures could be produced where intersections spontaneously arrange themselves into three-way junctions with an angle of 120 degrees between each nanotube. Formation of branching nanotube networks appears to follow a minimum-bending energy algorithm that solves for pathway minimization. It is also demonstrated that materials can be injected into specific containers within a network by nanotube-mediated transport of satellite vesicles having defined contents. Using a combination of microelectrofusion, spontaneous nanotube pattern formation, and satellite-vesicle injection, complex networks of containers and nanotubes can be produced for a range of applications in, for example, nanofluidics and artificial cell design. In addition, this electrofusion method allows integration of biological cells into lipid nanotube-vesicle networks.

  • Micropipet-assisted formation of microscopic networks of unilamellar lipid bilayer nanotubes and containers
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 17:22, s. 6754-6758
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe a novel micropipet-assisted technique for the construction of complex, surface-immobilized two-dimensional microscopic networks of unilamellar phospholipid bilayer vesicles (1-50 pm in diameter, 10(-15)-10(-12) L) interconnected by lipid nanotubes (100-300 nm in diameter). As starting material for the construction of networks, we used twinned vesicle pairs, one of which is multilamellar and functions as a membrane donor and the other unilamellar and functions as a membrane acceptor upon manipulation. By electromechanical insertion of a pipet tip into the unilamellar vesicle followed by lateral pulling of the micropipet away from the vesicle, a nanotube was formed. Buffer solution contained in the pipet was then injected into the nanotube orifice, forming a vesicle of controlled size that was immobilized on the surface. The networks have controlled connectivity and are well-defined with regard to the container size, angle between nanotube extensions, and nanotube length. The internal fluid composition of individual vesicles is defined during the formation of a network by selection of the solution contained in the micropipet.

  • Plasma fibrinogen level, bleeding and transfusion after on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery: a prospective observational study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Transfusion. - : Wiley. - 1537-2995 .- 0041-1132. ; 48:10, s. 2152-2158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Early identification of patients with increased risk of excessive bleeding and transfusion after cardiac surgery offers the possibility to initiate countermeasures. Fibrinogen is a key protein in the coagulation cascade and thus a potential biomarker for bleeding. We investigated the relationship between preoperative fibrinogen plasma concentration and postoperative bleeding and transfusion after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 170 patients (mean age, 67 ± 9 years; 75% men) undergoing isolated CABG were included in a prospective observational study. Patient variables (age, sex, operation time, anticoagulation therapy), preoperative laboratory variables (platelet [PLT] count, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, and fibrinogen), postoperative bleeding volume, and transfusions during hospital stay were registered. Independent predictors of bleeding volume and transfusion were identified with multiple regression models. RESULTS: Postoperative bleeding volume correlated univariately with preoperative fibrinogen concentration (r = −0.53, p < 0.001) and PLT count (r = −0.26, p = 0.001) but only preoperative fibrinogen concentration was an independent predictor of postoperative bleeding volume. Twenty-nine of the 170 patients (17%) received transfusions with blood products. Independent predictors of transfusion were preoperative fibrinogen concentration (odds ratio [OR], 2.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-3.7 per 1-unit decrease; p = 0.027), female sex (OR, 5.0; 95% CI, 1.8-14.7; p = 0.002), and aortic cross-clamp time (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06 per minute; p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that preoperative fibrinogen concentration (even within the normal range) is a limiting factor for postoperative hemostasis. Preoperative measurement of fibrinogen concentration provides information about bleeding volume and transfusion requirements after CABG.

  • Short-range structure of proton-conducting perovskite BaInxZr1-xO3-x/2 (x=0-0
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 20:10, s. 3480-3486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a systematic study, we investigate the effect of dopant level and hydration on the short-range structure of the proton-conducting perovskite-type oxide BaInxZr1-xO3-x/2 (x = 0 - 0.75), using infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the doping leads to significant local distortions of the average cubic structure of these materials. By increasing the In concentration from x = 0 to x = 0.75, new bands appear and grow in intensity in both the IR and the Raman spectra, showing that the local distortions become successively more and more pronounced. The structural distortions are largely uncorrelated to the presence of oxygen vacancies, but instead are mainly driven by the size and charge difference between the In3+ and Zr4+ ions, which leads to displacements of the cations and to tilting of the (In/Zr)O-6 octahedra. On the basis of our results, we suggest that there is a threshold between x = 0.10 and x = 0.25 where the structural distortions propagate throughout the whole perovskite structure. Comparison of our spectroscopic data with the proton conductivity for the same materials indicates that the presence of extended structural distortions is favorable for fast proton transport.

  • Statistical parameterization of lateral vehicle loads
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Vehicle System Dynamics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0042-3114 .- 1744-5159. ; 44:SUPPL. 1, s. 770-779
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A way of parameterizing markets and applications for fatigue life assessments for trucks is discussed. A set of factors influencing the fatigue life of a truck is identified. The demands and usage of the concept are discussed, and a parametric model is constructed for the lateral loads using the identified factors. Some explicit results are given, which approximate the expected damage given by the parameters. These approximations are shown to give results close to the ones found directly from measurements. The properties of the classification and the underlying probability spaces are discussed, as well as the problem of how to handle the uncertainties in estimates and the variation of the parameters from one market to another.

  • Surface properties of recycled titanium oxide recovered from paint waste
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Progress in organic coatings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0300-9440 .- 1873-331X. ; 125, s. 279-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aluminium oxide coated rutile pigment was extracted from a paint matrix by means of a thermal recycling process. The objective was to investigate the effect of the recycling process on the surface properties of the pigment. The pigment was analysed using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area measurements (BET), laser diffraction for particle size analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after the recycling process. Investigations on the zeta potential and the surface charge were performed as well. It was concluded that the rutile crystalline core and the aluminium oxide coating of the pigment were still intact after the recycling process. The particle size distribution of the recycled pigment was slightly broader compared to the virgin pigment. The measured magnitude in zeta potential of the recycled pigment was lower than for the virgin pigment. This difference is thought to be caused by alteration in the surface hydroxyl concentration. Surface charge titrations showed differences between the virgin and the recycled pigment at alkaline pH and at low salt concentrations.

  • MALDI imaging delineates hippocampal glycosphingolipid changes associated with neurotoxin induced proteopathy following neonatal BMAA exposure.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-3002 .- 1878-2434. ; 1865:7, s. 740-746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The environmental toxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) has been proposed to contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. We have previously shown that neonatal exposure to BMAA results in dose-dependent cognitive impairments, proteomic alterations and progressive neurodegeneration in the hippocampus of adult rats. A high BMAA dose (460mg/kg) also induced intracellular fibril formation, increased protein ubiquitination and enrichment of proteins important for lipid transport and metabolism. The aim of this study was therefore to elucidate the role of neuronal lipids in BMAA-induced neurodegeneration. By using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI IMS), we characterized the spatial lipid profile in the hippocampus of six month-old rats that were treated neonatally (postnatal days 9-10) with 460mg/kg BMAA. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed long-term changes in distinct ganglioside species (GM, GD, GT) in the dentate gyrus. These changes could be a consequence of direct effects on ganglioside biosynthesis through the b-series (GM3-GD3-GD2-GD1b-GT1b) and may be linked to astrogliosis. Complementary immunohistochemistry experiments towards GFAP and S100β further verified the role of increased astrocyte activity in BMAA-induced brain damage. This highlights the potential of imaging MS for probing chemical changes associated with neuropathological mechanisms in situ. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: MALDI Imaging, edited by Dr. Corinna Henkel and Prof. Peter Hoffmann.
