  • Determination of the Bending Rigidity of Graphene via Electrostatic Actuation of Buckled Membranes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 12:7, s. 3526-3531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Classical continuum mechanics is used extensively to predict the properties of nanoscale materials such as graphene. The bending rigidity, kappa, is an important parameter that is used, for example, to predict the performance of graphene nanoelectromechanical devices and also ripple formation. Despite its importance, there is a large spread in the theoretical predictions of kappa for few-layer graphene. We have used the snap-through behavior of convex buckled graphene membranes under the application of electrostatic pressure to determine experimentally values of kappa for double-layer graphene membranes. We demonstrate how to prepare convex-buckled suspended graphene ribbons and fully clamped suspended membranes and show how the determination of the curvature of the membranes and the critical snap-through voltage, using AFM, allows us to extract kappa. The bending rigidity of bilayer graphene membranes under ambient conditions was determined to be 35.5(-15.0)(+20.0) eV. Monolayers are shown to have significantly lower kappa than bilayers.

  • Early stage techno-economic and environmental analysis of aluminium batteries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2753-1457. ; 2:3, s. 420-429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For any proper evaluation of next generation energy storage systems technological, economic, and environmental performance metrics should be considered. Here conceptual cells and systems are designed for different aluminium battery (AlB) concepts, including both active and passive materials. Despite the fact that all AlBs use high-capacity metal anodes and materials with low cost and environmental impact, their energy densities differ vastly and only a few concepts become competitive taking all aspects into account. Notably, AlBs with high-performance inorganic cathodes have the potential to exhibit superior technological and environmental performance, should they be more reversible and energy efficient, while at the system level costs become comparable or slightly higher than for both AlBs with organic cathodes and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Overall, with continued development, AlBs should be able to complement LIBs, especially in light of their significantly lower demand for scarce materials. Several aluminium battery concepts are evaluated at material, cell and system levels for technical, economic and environmental performance, which enables them to complement lithium-ion batteries in the future.

  • Relationship between problems related to child late effects and parent burnout after pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Transplantation. - : Wiley. - 1397-3142 .- 1399-3046. ; 18:3, s. 302-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A few studies have indicated that parents' reactions to a child's serious disease may entail long-term stress for the parents. However, further knowledge of its consequences is valuable. The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of burnout in a Swedish national sample of parents of children who had undergone HSCT and survived. Burnout (Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire) and estimations of the child's health status (Lansky/Karnofsky estimations and study-specific questions) were self-reported by 159 mothers and 123 fathers. In addition, physicians made estimations of the child's health status (Lansky/Karnofsky estimations). Nonparametric tests revealed that burnout symptoms occurred more often among fathers of children who had undergone transplantation within the last five yr compared to fathers of children with no history of serious disease (34.4% vs. 19.9%). Burnout among mothers and fathers was associated with the child's number and severity of health impairments up to five yr after the child underwent HSCT (Spearman's rho for mothers 0.26-0.36 and for fathers 0.36-0.61). In conclusion, chronic stress in parents after a child's HSCT seems to abate eventually. However, parents should be monitored and offered adequate support when needed. Moreover, the situation of fathers in the often mother-dominated pediatric setting should receive more attention in research as well as in the clinic.

  • Improving marine water quality by mussel farming: A profitable solution for Swedish society
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Allen Press Inc.. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 34:2, s. 131-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eutrophication of coastal waters is a serious environmental problem with high costs for society globally. In eastern Skagerrak, reductions in eutrophication are planned through reduction of nitrogen inputs, but it is unclear how this can be achieved. One possible method is the cultivation of filter-feeding organisms, such as blue mussels, which remove nitrogen while generating seafood, fodder and agricultural fertilizer, thus recycling nutrients from sea to land. The expected effect of mussel farming on nitrogen cycling was modeled for the Gullmar Fjord on the Swedish west coast and it is shown that the net transport of nitrogen (sum of dissolved and particulate) at the fjord mouth was reduced by 20%. Existing commercial mussel farms already perform this service for free, but the benefits to society could be far greater. We suggest that rather than paying mussel farmers for their work that nutrient trading systems are introduced to improve coastal waters. In this context an alternative to nitrogen reduction in the sewage treatment plant in Lysekil community through mussel farming is presented. Accumulation of bio-toxins has been identified as the largest impediment to further expansion of commercial mussel farming in Sweden, but the problem seems to be manageable through new techniques and management strategies. On the basis of existing and potential regulations and payments, possible win-win solutions are suggested.

  • Toxicity of Dinophysis spp. in relation to population density and environmental conditions on the Swedish west coast
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Harmful Algae. - 1568-9883. ; 6:2, s. 218-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study in the field was to investigate whether there are differences between the outer archipelago (Gullmar Fjord) and a semi-enclosed fjord system (Koljo Fjord) in occurrences of D. acuta and D. acuminata as well as in their content of diarrheic shellfish toxin (DST) per cell. When all data pairs of cell toxicity of D. acuminata and the corresponding number of cells l(-1) from the two sites were tested in a regression analysis, a statistically significant negative correlation became evident and was apparent as a straight line on a log-log plot (p < 0.0001). Obviously, there was an overall inverse relationship between the population density of D. acuminata and the toxin content per cell. Plotted on a linear scale, all data-pairs of cell toxicity and cell number made up a parabolic curve. On this curve the data-pairs could be separated into three groups: (i) D. acuminata occurring in numbers of fewer than approximately 100 cells l(-1), and with a toxin content per cell above 5 rho g cell(-1); (ii) cell numbers between 100 and approximately 250 cells l(-1) with a cell toxin content from 5 to 2 rho g cell(-1); (iii) when the population became greater than 250 cells l(-1), the toxicity, with few exceptions, was less than 2 rho g cell(-1). By applying this subdivision, some clear patterns of the distribution of the differently toxic D. acuminata became evident. When comparing the cell toxicity of the two sites, it was obvious that the D. acuminata cells from all depths from the Gullmar Fjord as a mean were significantly more toxic compared to the Koljo Fjord samples. The results have demonstrated that approximately 100 high-toxicity cells in a low-density population at surface may lead to the same accumulation of DST in a mussel as the ingestion of 1500 low-toxicity cells from a high-density pycnocline population. • Out in the cold? Flexible integration and the political status of Euro opt-outs
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Union Politics. - 1465-1165. ; Vol 11:Nr 4, s. 485-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common argument against flexible integration as a solution to increased preference heterogeneity is that a likely consequence for those member states opting out of the enhanced cooperation is a loss of status and influence generally in the European Union (EU). It has been argued, for example, that the decisions by Denmark, Sweden and the UK not to join the Euro is considered to be free-riding, which leads to a bad reputation and exclusion from informal networks. We test this proposed free-rider effect by comparing the network capital of Euro-outsiders with insiders in the Council of the EU, using survey data of more than 600 member state representatives. The findings speak strongly against the free-rider hypothesis, as the Euro-outsiders are highly ranked in terms of network capital.
