  • Urban Multi-scale Environmental Predictor (UMEP): An integrated tool for city-based climate services
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling and Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-8152. ; 99, s. 70-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 The Authors UMEP (Urban Multi-scale Environmental Predictor), a city-based climate service tool, combines models and tools essential for climate simulations. Applications are presented to illustrate UMEP's potential in the identification of heat waves and cold waves; the impact of green infrastructure on runoff; the effects of buildings on human thermal stress; solar energy production; and the impact of human activities on heat emissions. UMEP has broad utility for applications related to outdoor thermal comfort, wind, urban energy consumption and climate change mitigation. It includes tools to enable users to input atmospheric and surface data from multiple sources, to characterise the urban environment, to prepare meteorological data for use in cities, to undertake simulations and consider scenarios, and to compare and visualise different combinations of climate indicators. An open-source tool, UMEP is designed to be easily updated as new data and tools are developed, and to be accessible to researchers, decision-makers and practitioners.

  • Urban storage heat flux variability explored using satellite, meteorological and geodata
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Theoretical and Applied Climatology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0177-798X .- 1434-4483. ; 141, s. 271-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The storage heat flux (Delta Q(S)) is the net flow of heat stored within a volume that may include the air, trees, buildings and ground. Given the difficulty of measurement of this important and large flux in urban areas, we explore the use of Earth Observation (EO) data. EO surface temperatures are used with ground-based meteorological forcing, urban morphology, land cover and land use information to estimate spatial variations of Delta Q(S) in urban areas using the Element Surface Temperature Method (ESTM). First, we evaluate ESTM for four "simpler" surfaces. These have good agreement with observed values. ESTM coupled to SUEWS (an urban land surface model) is applied to three European cities (Basel, Heraklion, London), allowing EO data to enhance the exploration of the spatial variability in Delta Q(S). The impervious surfaces (paved and buildings) contribute most to Delta Q(S). Building wall area seems to explain variation of Delta Q(S) most consistently. As the paved fraction increases up to 0.4, there is a clear increase in Delta Q(S). With a larger paved fraction, the fraction of buildings and wall area is lower which reduces the high values of Delta Q(S).

  • Making fields of merit : Buddhist nuns and gendered orders in Thailand
  • 2007
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Religion plays a central role in Thai society with Buddhism intertwined in the daily lives of the people. Religion also plays an important role in establishing gender boundaries. The growth in recent decades of self-governing nunneries and the increasing interest of Thai women in a Buddhist monastic life are notable changes in the religion?gender dynamic. This anthropological study addresses religion and gender relations, analysing this through the lens of the lives, actions and role in Thai society of Buddhist nuns (mae chii). It presents an unique ethnography of the Thai Buddhist nuns, examines what it implies to be a female ascetic in contemporary Thailand and analyses how the ordained state for women fits into the wider gender patterns found in Thai society. The study also deals with the nuns? agency in creating religious space and authority for women. It raises questions about how the position of Thai Buddhist nuns outside the Buddhist sangha affects their religious legitimacy and describes recent moves to restore a Theravada order of female monks. Addressing major issues of gender and religion, this volume will be of great interest to scholars working in anthropology, gender studies, religious studies and Thai studies as well as to an interested general public.

  • Making fields of merit: Buddhist nuns challenge gendered orders in Thailand
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This anthropological study addresses the interaction and interconncectedness between religion and gender relations in Thailand, analysing this through the lens of the Buddhist nuns' (mae chiis') lives, actions and role in Thai society. The mae chiis have a long hstory in Thailand. However, leaving lay lifte to become a nun in Thailand implies going against prescribed female gender norms. The recent decades' growth of nunneries governed by the nuns themselves and the reports of Tahi women's increasing interest in Buddhist monastic life are notable changes in women's behaviour in the spiritual field. This connotes a modification of the restricted male religious domain, which is related to the modernisation of the social and religious landscape. This work is concerned with Thai Buddhist nuns' agency in the processes of change in their religious vocation. The aims of the study are to examine what it means to be a female ascetic in contemporary Thailand, to explore how the mae chiis alter their religious position, and to analyse how the female ordained state fits into the wider Thai sex/gender system. These inquiries adress major themes of gender and religion in athropology and are here examined and explored mainly in a local Buddhist nunnery in Central Thailand. The goal is to illustrate how contemporary mae chiis at a nunnery are forming their religious legitimacy in relation the monks' sangha and to the laity. The arguments developed in this study are based on seventeen months of fieldwork, mostly spent at nunneries. Data were collected using mainly participant observation, ritual studies, informal conversations and interviews. As demonstrated in this study, the mae chiis are agents and creators of meanings and new orders in Thai society. They lead processes of autonomous realisation of their religious vocation. The women portrayed in this thesis are thus not passively accepting their marginalised position. They utilise their autonomy and find ways to create space outside the male hierarchy. At nunneries, the role of the mae chiis has been broadened and become more analogous to that of the monks. Moral conduct, Buddhist practice, and Buddhist knowledge are important for the nuns' religious status. Through their daily practice of giving alms, the laity demonstrates its recognition of them as religious persons. This study shows that the mae chiis have the potential to cross the gendered boundary between the lay and religious realm and be transformed into fields of merit for lay people. Impeccable conduct, religious performances and Buddhist knowledge have proved to be requirements for achieving religious legitimacy.
