  • Who will present it during the broadcast? A case study at a daily activity centre
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs. - : Wiley. - 1471-3802. ; 16:1, s. 65-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study is an investigation of a daily activity centre (DA). The overall aim was to build a grounded theory that could explain why this particular DA deviated from the norms of Swedish group homes and DAs described in previous studies. These studies have suggested that the staff stuck to old routines, such as letting the participants fold laundry, set the table and clean the table. These routines did little to nothing to promote the skills necessary for participation in the society, such as reading and writing. Furthermore, I used visual ethnographic methods and interviews to capture the activities at the DA. My analysis showed how the staff and the participants at the DA were engaged in reading and writing activities, such as publishing articles, comics, broadcasting radio and web-TV. The main conclusion is that four factors facilitated participation: new technologies, IT competence, a culture of self-responsibility and autonomy/control.

  • Will an app-based reading intervention change how teachers rate their teaching self-efficacy beliefs? A test of social cognitive theory in Swedish special educational settings
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - : FRONTIERS MEDIA SA. - 2504-284X. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational researchers have challenged Bandura’s prediction that self-efficacy beliefs tend to be established early in learning and that once set, self-efficacy beliefs persist unless a critical event causes them to be reevaluated. However, the results have been mixed in previous research, including being positive, negative, and unchanged. In response, we evaluated how 75 teachers (i.e., special educators) rate their teaching self-efficacy beliefs in motivating student reading and adapting reading instruction at two time points. All teachers taught students with an intellectual disability, communication difficulties, and poor reading skills. The teachers participated in a workshop to learn teaching reading strategies with apps under various conditions (comprehension strategies, phonemic strategies, or both comprehension and phonemic strategies). We analyzed teacher self-efficacy beliefs at two time points with a 12-week span (pre-and postintervention). First, we developed measures of teacher self-efficacy through confirmatory factor analyses. Next, we analyzed the data with multiple imputation and mixed linear regression with difference-in-differences (DiD). The results indicated no statistically significant treatment effect on teachers’ rating of their teaching self-efficacy beliefs. We conclude that our results agree with Bandura’s original prediction and thus, his social cognitive theory.

  • A Mechanism Approach to the Sociology of Teachers’ and Students’ Actions: Teaching Practice, Student Disengagement and Instructional Materials
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this dissertation is to describe and explain teachers’ and students’ actions related to instruction in compulsory education classrooms in Sweden. In order to approach these issues, I will focus on social mechanisms (processes) that can explain teachers’ and students’ actions in the classroom. I argue that such mechanisms and actions in schools have been sparsely studied in previous research. Study I deals with the research question, Why does the teaching practice of individual work and class teaching occur in Swedish classrooms? Study II deals with the research question, Why does usage of instructional materials (whiteboards, laptops, paper-based materials, textbooks) vary across Swedish classrooms? Study III deals with the research question, Why does student behavioral disengagement occur and reoccur in Swedish classrooms? Study IV deals with the research question, Why and how do students’ expectations about school, teacher–student relations, students’ commitment to school, and truancy mediate the effects of student social background on mathematics achievement across Swedish schools? For the first three studies, I used video data that I analyzed using multiple methods such as descriptive statistics, cox regression, field notes, transcripts, and pictures. In Study IV, I used secondary data from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development analyzed with structural equation modelling (SEM). In Studies I and II, the school class was the unit of analysis. In Studies III and IV, the individual student was the unit of analysis. Study I indicates the increasing individualization of teaching. Furthermore, Study I indicates that subject area predicts teaching practice. Study II indicates that teachers use text-based materials more than textbooks or laptops. The study also suggests that class size affects students’ usage of instructional materials in teaching practice, as do school subjects. Study III indicates that peer encouragement and school subject can predict student behavioral disengagement. Study IV indicates that the relationship between student background and mathematics achievement is mediated by school expectations, truancy, and commitment. Moreover, I also identify an independent indirect effect of the teacher–student relationship on the average predicted mathematics achievement.

  • Cohort and education as predictors of temporary employment, and their relation to low wages and socioeconomic classification for young people in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Education and Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1363-9080 .- 1469-9435. ; 32:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of my paper is to describe and explain the probability of staying in temporary work for young people (age 16–27) in Sweden between 1992 and 2011 and its relation to socioeconomic outcomes (low socioeconomic classification and wage). I used panel data from the Swedish Labour Force Survey (LFS) and the longitudinal integration database for health insurance and labour market studies (LISA). To analyse the data, I used a dynamic probit model, unconditional quantile regression, and a pooled bivariate probit model. My results suggest that young people who have a low education have lower probabilities of receiving temporary employment in younger cohorts. However, younger cohorts with a lower education have a substantive wage disadvantage, specifically in younger cohorts compared to older cohorts. Low-educated cohorts also have a higher probability of obtaining low socioeconomic classification (SEC) employment, which is conditional on holding temporary employment in older cohorts compared to other educational groupings. © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s). • Explaining Variation in Usage of Instructional Materials in Teaching Practice: Collegial Focus and Teachers’ Decision Making Power
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IARTEM e-Journal. - 1837-2104. ; 7:2, s. 22-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to describe and explain va riation in use of instructional materials such as laptops, textbooks, paper-based m aterials, and whiteboards in teaching in compulsory education. The data consists of video recordings of 74 lessons in Swedish schools. The results from quanti tative analyses confirm previous research by demonstrating that the teacher s in the study distributed more time to paper-based materials than other instr uctional materials. These results are interpreted using field notes and video images. The regression model confirms that subject area and class size influence teachers’ and students’ use of instructional materials.

  • Identifying Mechanisms of Teaching Practices: A Study in Swedish Comprehensive Schooling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 62:2, s. 213-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to identify the mechanisms behind the occurrence of teaching practices of seatwork and recitation across lessons. The study is based on an analysis of 74 video recorded lessons from 4 school classes in Swedish comprehensive schools during 2013. Firstly, the results suggest that teaching practices such as seatwork dominated across lessons when compared to, for example, reciting. Secondly, the study gives a detailed analysis of teaching practices by analyzing video transcripts. Thirdly, using Cox regression the study lends a weak support for the school subject’s impact on seatwork and recitation. A weak support was found for recitation and no support was found for seatwork. However, no statistical generalization was possible and further research is needed.

  • “Stepping up or stepping down?“: The earnings differences associated with Swedish temporary workers’ employment sequences.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social Science Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0049-089X .- 1096-0317. ; 82, s. 126-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The share of temporary work in the labor market has increased, but the consequences of this change remain controversial. Specifically, the differences associated with temporary employment and labor market outcomes, such as earnings, are debated. In this study, we contribute to the literature by describing the earnings differences associated with employment sequences among Swedish temporary workers. In the first step, we derive sequence types using sequence analysis. In the next step, we use propensity score weighting for the types of employment sequences to weight the covariates, as informed by life course labor market inequality theories. Finally, we evaluate the covariates’ relation to earnings using weighted regressions. We find that the type of employment sequence varies with differences in earnings relative to predominantly constant temporary employment. In particular, workers who go from temporary work to permanent work exhibit gains. To our surprise, workers transitioning from permanent work to temporary work also increase their earnings.
