  • Teaching about death and dying : A national mixed-methods survey of palliative care education provision in Swedish undergraduate nursing programmes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 36:2, s. 545-557
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In coming decades, the number of people affected by illnesses who need palliative care will rise worldwide. Registered Nurses are in a central position in providing this care, and education is one of the necessary components for meeting coming requirements. However, there is a lack of knowledge about palliative care in undergraduate nursing education curricula, including the extent of the education provided and the related pedagogical methods. Aim: The aim was to investigate the extent, content and pedagogical methods used and to explore lecturers’ experiences of being responsible for teaching and learning about palliative care for undergraduate nursing students on nursing programmes at Swedish universities. Setting: All 24 universities responsible for providing undergraduate nursing education in Sweden participated. Participants: One lecturer with in-depth knowledge about palliative care or end-of-life care education participated in the quantitative (n = 24) and qualitative (n = 22) parts of the study. Method: A mixed-method research study with an explorative design was used. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data, and content analysis for qualitative, with both also analysed integratively. Results: Few undergraduate nursing programmes included a specific course about palliative care in their curricula, however, all universities incorporated education about palliative care in some way. Most of the palliative care education was theoretical, and lecturers used a variety of pedagogical strategies and their own professional and personal experience to support students to understand the palliative care approach. Topics such as life and death were difficult to both learn and teach about. Conclusions: There is a need for substantial education about palliative care. Lecturers strive on their own to develop students’ understanding and increase the extent of palliative care education with innovative teaching strategies, but must compete with other topics. Palliative care teaching must be prioritised, not only by the universities, but also by the national authority.

  • Appropriation: Working with Art-based Learning and Enhancing Artistic Knowledge in Teacher Education
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Art-based education: an ethics and politics of relation. - Göteborg : ArtMonitor. - 9789198061864 ; , s. 177-200
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Visual art education rests between the scientific and the artistic in constant dialogue between the two. Although visual art teachers have one leg in education and one leg in art, they must find a way to move forward using both legs. That is, this movement requires students studying to be visual art teachers to manage the artistic as well as scientific aspects of their teaching. The Visual Art Teacher Program at HDK helps students understand their position between art and science using several pedagogical strategies, including artistic design, contemporary art as an educational tool, blogs, tutoring seminars using peer reviews, tutoring, and Socratic conversations. These strategies combined with explorations of concepts such as appropriation help visual art students’ process and analyze their subject content.

  • A Lagrangian cylindrical coordinate system for characterizing dynamic surface geometry of tubular anatomic structures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0140-0118 .- 1741-0444. ; 56:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 The Author(s) Vascular morphology characterization is useful for disease diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment planning, and prediction of treatment durability. To quantify the dynamic surface geometry of tubular-shaped anatomic structures, we propose a simple, rigorous Lagrangian cylindrical coordinate system to monitor well-defined surface points. Specifically, the proposed system enables quantification of surface curvature and cross-sectional eccentricity. Using idealized software phantom examples, we validate the method’s ability to accurately quantify longitudinal and circumferential surface curvature, as well as eccentricity and orientation of eccentricity. We then apply the method to several medical imaging data sets of human vascular structures to exemplify the utility of this coordinate system for analyzing morphology and dynamic geometric changes in blood vessels throughout the body. • A scientific standpoint in society questions : Vetenskapligt förhållningssätt i samhällsfrågor
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Fysikaktuellt. ; :1, s. 14-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

    • Several studies1,2 have pointed out the large variance of the actual pressure distributed when compression bandages are applied in today's health care. In addition, there are many indications that not only the sub-bandage pressure, but also the bandage stiffness during flexion of the underlying muscles to obtain efficient “vein pumping” are essential for an efficient compression treatment of complications related to venous insufficiency.3

  • Cross- and triple-ratios of human body parts during development
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Anatomical Record. - 1932-8494 .- 1932-8486. ; 294, s. 1360-1369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently developed landmark-based geometric morphometry has been used to depict the morphological development of organisms. In geometry, four landmarks can be mapped to any other four by Mo¨bius transformations,if the cross-ratio of the landmarks is invariant and vice versa. To geometrically analyze the morphological development of the human body,we examined the cross-ratio of three consecutive body parts that are segmented by four landmarks in their configuration. Moreover, we introduced the triple-ratio of five landmarks that segments four consecutive parts (e.g., the shoulder, upper arm, forearm, and hand) and examined their growth patterns. The cross- and triple-ratios of the upper limb andshoulder girdle in fetuses were constant when biomechanical landmarks were used, although the cross-ratio of the upper limb varied when anatomical landmarks were used. The cross-ratios of the lower limbs, trunk, and pelvic girdles in fetuses differed from their corresponding cross-ratiosin adults. These results suggest Mo¨bius growth in the fetal upper limb and shoulder girdle but not in the other body parts examined. However, the growth balance of the three contiguous body parts was represented by the developmental change in the cross-ratio. Therefore, the cross- andtriple-ratios may be applicable for simple but significant assessments of growth balance or proportion of the body parts. Anat Rec, 294:1360–1369, 2011.

  • Cross-Feeding Dynamics Described by a Series Expansion of the Replicator Equation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Mathematical Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0092-8240 .- 1522-9602. ; 75:5, s. 709-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding how ecosystems evolve and how they respond to external perturbations is critical if we are to predict the effects of human intervention. A particular class of ecosystems whose dynamics are poorly understood are those in which the species are related via cross-feeding. In these ecosystems the metabolic output of one species is being used as a nutrient or energy source by another species. In this paper we derive a mathematical description of cross-feeding dynamics based on the replicator equation. We show that under certain assumptions about the system (e.g., high flow of nutrients and time scale separation), the governing equations reduce to a second-order series expansion of the replicator equation. By analysing the case of two and three species we derive conditions for co-existence and show under which parameter conditions one can expect an increase in mean fitness. Finally, we discuss how the model can be parameterised from experimental data.
