  • Living with a person with young onset dementia–spousal experience
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Oxfordshire : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 19:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Being of working age while at the same time needing to help a partner with young onset dementia has specific consequences for spouses. Research to date has been sparse concerning this particular group of spouses. The aim of the study was to explore spouses’ everyday experiences when living with a person with young onset dementia. Method: The study had a descriptive qualitative design with semi-structured interviews with nine spouses. The interviews were analysed using content analysis. Result: The interviewed spouses experienced emotions that varied from feelings of loneliness, frustration, and worry to peace of mind. They said that they used coping strategies, which included adopting a positive mindset, adapting to inabilities, adopting an avoidant approach, and finding ways to recharge. Spouses also felt that they could use more support, both formal and informal. Conclusion: The spouse of a person with young onset dementia has a range of emotional experiences and has resourceful ways of handling everyday life. Various types of support are offered to spouses, however, they seemed to desire more from health care services. © 2024 The Author(s). • Customer Service process IT-enabled support Fit or misfit? - A real world case
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 22-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a description of a real world case which focuses on a method to define the major gaps between functional requirements and existing support in a traditional ERP system. To identify and define the major gaps the method is using short interviews, existing documentation and graphic process diagrams. The report covers the process Customer Contact – Order Acknowledgement for a global chemicals manufacturer, Perstorp. The group in focus for this study is Customer Service. The results of this case were presented to Perstorp’s Customer Service as well as IT management as background material to assess improvement possibilities for both processes, IT support and for a new ERP strategy. Many other businesses are in similar situations. The aim in publishing this research paper is that these findings can be of practical use to other businesses as well as be an empirical foundation for other papers and possibly further research.

  • Measuring oral health from a public health perspective
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - Stockholm : Swedish Dental Association. - 0347-9994. ; 32:3, s. 125-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper aims to analyse measures of oral health-related quality of life (OHOOL) from a Public Health perspective. Twenty-two measures were analysed conceptually as to their mirroring of the Public Health principles: empowerment, participation, holism and equity. Elements of empowerment were found in connection with application of the measures. Participation was found in using lay opinions during development in 12 measures. All measures analysed had elements of a holistic approach so far that they were not wholly biological. Two measures captured positive health effects. Measures were available for all ages, various languages and populations, an element of equity. No measure was wholly compatible with Public Health. They were based on a utilitarian theory not in full accordance with modern health promotion. There is a need to develop measures that more obviously capture the positive aspects of health and health as a process, as well as the personal perspective of oral health.

  • Graphical modeling techniques and usefulness in the Model Driven Arcitechture : Which are the criteria for a "good" Computer independent model?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 31st Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS31). - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 13-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Object Management Group (OMG) has presented a framework for model driven development: Model Driven Architecture (MDA). The departure point of this paper is an interest in process oriented modeling techniques relevant for a computer independent model in the MDA. We searched for the answer on the question what constitutes a "good" computer independent model (CIM). To get an answer we were using OMG:s demands of the modeling techniques that should be used when developing CIMs and found four process oriented modeling techniques which could serve as candidates. These four process oriented modeling techniques is analyzed based by Moody"s quality criterions. The findings indicates that there are only one candidate, BPMN, that meets some of Moody"s quality criterions, but there also drawbacks in BPMN, such as the criterions; expressiveness and emphasis.

  • Minimizing the time spent on transformations between computer independent models and platform independent models
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 31st Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS31). - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 12-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A well known trade-off effect with modelling is that when it is user friendly it becomes ambiguous and when it has a formal notation, that makes it unambiguous, it becomes less user friendly. A well known solution to this dilemma is to use models on various levels of formalism where the least formalized models are known to be more user friendly and the most formalized models are well suited for being directly translated to program code. This article investigates how the user friendliness at an informal level can be combined with the accuracy needed at a more formal level of modeling. It aims at combining an informal user friendly perspective with a formal developer perspective in order to minimize the time spent on transformation mapping between user friendly models and developer models. Theoretical data and empirical data indicates possibilities of minimizing the work with transformations between models. The results show that a number of developed criteria can be used to secure the user friendliness of models that are used in communications between the designer and the end user.

  • Family caregivers experiences of formal care when caring for persons with dementia through the stages of the disease
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 30:3, s. 526-534
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Family caregivers' experiences of formal care when caring for persons with dementia through the process of the disease is sparsely investigated.AIMS: To investigate family caregivers' experiences of formal care when caring for a person with dementia, through the stages of the disease.DESIGN: A qualitative approach with focus group interviews.METHODS: Four focus group interviews were conducted in October 2011 with 23 spouses and adult children of persons with dementia and analysed with content analysis.RESULTS: The participants' experiences of formal care when caring for a person with dementia were captured in the theme 'Familycaregiving requires collaboration with formal care to get support adjusted to needs specific to the stages of dementia'. This can be broken down into the categories 'The dementia diagnosis - entry into formal care as a novice family caregiver', 'Needing expanded collaboration with formal care to continue care at home' and 'Being dependent on a nursing home and trying to maintain involvement'.CONCLUSION: Family caregiving requires collaboration with formal care to get support adjusted to the individual's needs, specific to the stages of dementia. Caregivers experience a transition process with three main turning points: the dementia diagnosis; when they realise increased need for formal care to continue caring at home; and when the person with dementia is moved into a nursing home. The interviewed caregivers experience formal care reactive to their needs and this often promoted unhealthy transitions. Formal careneeds to be proactive and deliver available care and support early on in the dementia trajectory. Interventions should focus on facilitating a healthy transition for family caregivers through the trajectory of the dementia disease to ensure their well-being. © 2015 Nordic College of Caring Science.

  • Predicting caregiver burden in informal caregivers caring for persons with dementia living at home – A follow-up cohort study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Dementia. - London : Sage Publications. - 1471-3012 .- 1741-2684. ; 9:3, s. 640-660
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Longitudinal studies of caregiver burden when caring for persons with dementia living at home are sparse. The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with caregiver burden and predicting increased burden related to caregivers, persons with dementia and formal care. Data were collected through interviews with 1223 caregivers in eight European countries. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed. Factors associated with caregiver burden included extensive informal care provision, decreased well-being and reduced quality of life for the caregiver and reduced cognition, decreased quality of life, severe neuropsychiatric symptoms and depression in the person with dementia and caregivers’ negative experience of quality of care. Factors predicting an increased burden were diminished caregiver well-being, severe neuropsychiatric symptoms of the person with dementia and caregivers’ negative perception of quality of care. The knowledge gained in this study may be useful in developing more adequate service systems and interventions to improve dementia care. © 2018, The Author(s) 2018.

  • Socio-scientific Issues : A Way to Improve Students’ Interest and Learning?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: US-China Education Review B. - New York : David Publishing Company. - 2161-6248 .- 1548-6613 .- 1930-1529. ; 8:9, s. 342-347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to many documents, there is a strong need to renew science education. One way could be to work with SSI (socio-scientific issues). This paper reports on both students' and teachers' experiences and learning when working with socio-scientific issues in science education in secondary school (aged from 13 to 16). The approach is multidimensional, as factors that influence cognition as well as motivation and the forming of attitudes are complex. Results suggest that SSI work forms are more important than personal factors for explaining outcomes. Relevant issues, autonomy and functioning group work seem to be important aspects of successful SSI work together with structure provided by the teacher, and information that challenges previous knowledge. In general, SSI seems to be most efficient for students, who believe that they learn from presenting and discussing their knowledge, focus on "the large picture", acknowledge own responsibility for learning, find school science personally relevant and are self-efficacious. It seems that the outcomes from SSI work are much in the hands of the teacher. This paper is a short summary of the first year and quantitative part of the project. Further results from the project will later be found in our homepage (http://www.sisc.se).

  • Are newly qualified preschool teachers ready for today’s mandate? Principals' views in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education. - Oxon : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1090-1027 .- 1745-5642. ; 45:3, s. 352-370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to contribute to the discussion concerning adaptations and improvements of preschool teacher education. Such changes are crucial, because many newly qualified preschool teachers struggle to live up to the requirements the profession places upon them. This study is conducted in Sweden, where early childhood education has a long tradition and is well established. Simultaneously, Swedish preschool education follows the international tendency of schoolification in early childhood education. A Q methodological study design was selected to investigate the views of preschool principals on newly qualified preschool teachers. Q method results were enriched with qualitative data from a written questionnaire and findings reveal a consensus among the 55 participants. This confirms previous research stating that newly qualified preschool teachers are perceived as competent in planning teaching and adhering to curriculum intentions. At the same time, this study shows that the increasingly academicized preschool teacher education does not seem to sufficiently prepare the next generation of preschool teachers to build relationships with guardians and colleagues. The study suggests the need for a comprehensive understanding of the profession and intensified collaborations between various stakeholders to better support newly qualified preschool teachers in Sweden and beyond.

  • Restoring Balance-A Woman's Expressions of Lived Experience of Everyday Life During a Period of Aging : A Case Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Inquiry. - Rochester, NY : Sage Publications. - 0046-9580 .- 1945-7243. ; 60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bereaved older people face stressors from the changes in roles associated with the death of a spouse. To illustrate the lived experience of everyday life during a period of aging after a woman's loss of her spouse. One woman born in 1918 was followed between 74 and 80 years of age after her husband died. Data consisted of daily diary. The text from the diaries were analyzed with a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. Everyday life after becoming a widow is characterized by balancing between personal resources to manage everyday life and vulnerability. In health and social care, it is important to identify experiences of vulnerability because these are associated with poor health.
