  • Modes of learning and entrepreneurial knowledge
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 18:1, s. 101-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we examine how entrepreneurs differ in their modes of learning and whether variations in modes of learning have any influence on their possession of entrepreneurial knowledge that increase their ability to recognise and exploit new business opportunities. Based on statistical analysis of 291 entrepreneurs we find that a learning mode that favours exploration is positively associated with the ability to recognise a higher number of business opportunities. A learning mode that favours exploitation is on the other hand negatively associated with the ability to cope with liabilities of newness. Adding to this, we find that the positive association between career experience and entrepreneurial knowledge is stronger with a learning mode that favours exploration. • The Process of Entrepreneurial Learning : A Conceptual Framework
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship. - Oxford : Blackwell Publishing. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 29:4, s. 399-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article seeks to advance the theoretical knowledge of entrepreneurial learning by reviewing and synthesizing available research into a conceptual framework that explains the process of entrepreneurial learning as an experiential process. The framework identifies three main components in the process of entrepreneurial learning: entrepreneurs' career experience, the transformation process, and entrepreneurial knowledge in terms of effectiveness in recognizing and acting on entrepreneurial opportunities and coping with the liabilities of newness. Based on the arguments in the article, five major propositions were developed to refine our understanding of entrepreneurial learning. Finally, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

  • The process of entrepreneurial learning : A conceptual framework
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurial learning. - London : Routledge. - 9780203931929 - 9780521709101 ; , s. 44-71
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Extant research suggests that entrepreneurs who have been involved in starting up a new venture also seem to be more successful and effective in starting up and managing their second and third organization (see e.g. Lamont 1972; Vesper 1980; Ronstadt 1988; Starr and Bygrave 1992; Wright et al. 1998). If this is true, what expertise and special knowledge do these entrepreneurs gain from doing their first start-up, and how do entrepreneurs develop their personal experiences into such expertise and special knowledge? Considering that entrepreneurship is a field of research that has not been particularly well studied in relation to the process of learning (Agnedal 1999; Rae and Carswell 2001; Ravasi et al. 2004), it is not surprising that these and similar questions have remained largely unanswered within this field.

  • The role of informal investors in the entrepreneurial process : An empirical study of opportunity, motivation and ability
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study seeks to advance the understanding of the role of informal investors in the entrepreneurial process, something that up to date has received very limited attention. By analysing the life experience and career background of four informal investors the study explore their motivation for being involved in entrepreneurial opportunities, and the personal resources these individuals build up and develop during their careers that facilitate this involvement. The overall results suggest that their careers can be described as an experien- tial learning process that has facilitated the development of valuable skills and knowledge that is of critical importance for the entrepreneurial projects they become involved in. The paper ends with a discussion of its findings and implications for future research.

  • Signalling pathways regulating inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in human kidney epithelial cells
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pharmacology. - 0014-2999 .- 1879-0712. ; 469:1-3, s. 21-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the signalling pathways involved in the cytokine-activated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) response in a human kidney epithelial cell line, A498. Unstimulated cells did not express iNOS. Exposure of A498 cells to a cytokine mixture consisting of interferon gamma, interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) increased nitrite production, iNOS mRNA and protein expression. Pharmacological inhibition of tyrosine kinases, including janus kinase (JAK2), and protein kinase C (PKC) inhibited cytokine-mediated nitrite production and iNOS protein expression. The involvement of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) was investigated. Inhibition of p38 MAPK, but not of an upstream activator of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), caused a decrease in iNOS expression and nitrite production in response to cytokines. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay of nuclear extract from cytokine-stimulated cells demonstrated a pronounced binding to a nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) sequence present in the human iNOS promoter. Furthermore, the NF-kappa B inhibitor pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) decreased cytokine-activated iNOS protein expression and nitrite production. The present study has demonstrated that cytokine-stimulated iNOS expression in human kidney epithelial cells involves activation of tyrosine kinases, including JAK2, PKC, p38 MAPK and NF-kappa B.

  • Deep learning-based quantification of PET/CT prostate gland uptake : association with overall survival
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging. - Chichester : Blackwell Publishing. - 1475-0961 .- 1475-097X. ; 40:2, s. 106-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To validate a deep-learning (DL) algorithm for automated quantification of prostate cancer on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and explore the potential of PET/CT measurements as prognostic biomarkers. Material and methods: Training of the DL-algorithm regarding prostate volume was performed on manually segmented CT images in 100 patients. Validation of the DL-algorithm was carried out in 45 patients with biopsy-proven hormone-naïve prostate cancer. The automated measurements of prostate volume were compared with manual measurements made independently by two observers. PET/CT measurements of tumour burden based on volume and SUV of abnormal voxels were calculated automatically. Voxels in the co-registered 18F-choline PET images above a standardized uptake value (SUV) of 2·65, and corresponding to the prostate as defined by the automated segmentation in the CT images, were defined as abnormal. Validation of abnormal voxels was performed by manual segmentation of radiotracer uptake. Agreement between algorithm and observers regarding prostate volume was analysed by Sørensen-Dice index (SDI). Associations between automatically based PET/CT biomarkers and age, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), Gleason score as well as overall survival were evaluated by a univariate Cox regression model. Results: The SDI between the automated and the manual volume segmentations was 0·78 and 0·79, respectively. Automated PET/CT measures reflecting total lesion uptake and the relation between volume of abnormal voxels and total prostate volume were significantly associated with overall survival (P = 0·02), whereas age, PSA, and Gleason score were not. Conclusion: Automated PET/CT biomarkers showed good agreement to manual measurements and were significantly associated with overall survival. © 2019 The Authors. • Predicting Sensitivity to Adverse Lifestyle Risk Factors for Cardiometabolic Morbidity and Mortality
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - Basel : MDPI. - 2072-6643. ; 14:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People appear to vary in their susceptibility to lifestyle risk factors for cardiometabolic disease; determining a priori who is most sensitive may help optimize the timing, design, and delivery of preventative interventions. We aimed to ascertain a person’s degree of resilience or sensitivity to adverse lifestyle exposures and determine whether these classifications help predict cardiometabolic disease later in life; we pooled data from two population-based Swedish prospective cohort studies (n = 53,507), and we contrasted an individual’s cardiometabolic biomarker profile with the profile predicted for them given their lifestyle exposure characteristics using a quantile random forest approach. People who were classed as ‘sensitive’ to hypertension- and dyslipidemia-related lifestyle exposures were at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD, hazards ratio 1.6 (95% CI: 1.3, 1.91)), compared with the general population. No differences were observed for type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk. Here, we report a novel approach to identify individuals who are especially sensitive to adverse lifestyle exposures and who are at higher risk of subsequent cardiovascular events. Early preventive interventions may be needed in this subgroup.

  • Nordic and Baltic Case Studies and Assessments in Enterprises - CREDIT Report 2
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report summarizes 28 case studies addressing the common interest for indicators in case studies in Nordic and Baltic countries and is distributed to different building types – Benchmarking systems and indicators (4 case studies) – Offices (7 case studies) – Housing (8 case studies) – School and nursery (5 case studies) – Shopping centres (3 case studies) – Hospital (1 case studies) There are some good practices for benchmarking in large scale. At the moment, those are addressing mostly process and investment indicators, and do not yet cover performance indicators. Front-runner enterprises are already recognizing the potential of benchmarking, rating to highest class may increase interest from investors and building owners. Otherwise, some national and international rating systems are available in the market. Few frontline owners are already using cost and performance indicators in daily operations, such as Senate Properties in Finland and Statsbygg in Norway. Their focus is mostly directed to investment, costs, and energy efficiency. Altogether, it seems that systematic procedures are needed in the industry for evaluating performance and compliance to end result to needs. There is no commonly agreed or standardized global or European Key Performance Indicator system, but some national and international rating schemes are available. During the past five years a number of rated buildings has grown greatly, and motivation for using those is increasing. Market signals are also showing paradigm shift towards end user involvement, and standardized methods for involving end users and making continuous monitoring of satisfaction should be agreed. When committing end users, they need help in order to be able to contribute in value adding way. Workplace management in office buildings is used for tailoring spaces better to end user needs. Senate Properties in Finland develops services where spaces are a strategic asset that can help to contribute an organizational change. National and international indicator systems do not cover all important business matters and companies are developing their own systems. Some contractors have been developing national systems for process performance monitoring. Indoor environment is important in shopping centres, and performance level for spaces is an opportunity to owner to enhance cash flow through rental agreements. In the future, building automation systems could provide real-time monitoring of performance indicators continuously contributing changes automatically to reach desired performance. Organizations are looking for an indicator system that could help them to measure and enhance performance of buildings. Apparently some indicators are more important than others; regulations for accessibility have become tighter, location is still the core driver, common interest towards operations and reducing annual energy consumptions is growing. There is potential to improve energy efficiency of buildings. Indicator systems should be implemented in tools to encourage usage in projects; those processes are now rather manual. Building Information Models (BIMs) may be suitable tool for managing those more automated way. Based on findings in CREDIT project, offices and shopping centres are most attracting building types in terms of benchmarking. Enterprises are benchmarking indicators to some extent but systematic process has not yet been developed and a uniform indicator system considering also building performance and value creation is missing. CREDIT project has increased understanding on indicators and transparency and industry needs more research on this matter.
