- In this paper we present the initial findings of a genre based case study at a large Swedish company, with a record of early use of internal email (1982). The design of the particular email system was closely mapped to the organizational hierarchy. One of our informants kept one week of incoming email messages. We then asked questions about each message and how it related to the work of the informant, and to the organization. Based on the messages and the interviews we clustered the messages in different genres. Most literature of genres of organizational communication has focused on the genres themselves, e.g. email messages constituting different instances of genres. We found however that many messages, rather than being instances of genres, were part of informal conversations. In these conversations, however, it was common to discuss and negotiate which genres where appropriate to use in different situations.

Into the Isle of Self : Nietzschean Patterns and Contrasts in D. H. Lawrence's The Trespasser

- This thesis is based on a close reading of Lawrence's novel The Trespasser from a Nietzschean point of view. By adopting this perspective it aims at giving the novel the sense of unity it has so far been alleged to lack. The analysis is preceded by a detailed discussion of the concept of literary influence. Since the purpose of this study is to illuminate what is unique in Lawrence's novel rather than to claim any derivative use of Nietzsche's thought, the focus is on Lawrence's transformative and dynamic way of adopting Nietzschean themes in his novel. The Trespasser is read in its Edwardian context, with particular attention to the response that Nietzsche's philosophy met with 1900-1910. A separate section is devoted to the presentation of him in the Socialist weekly The New Age in 1908-09. The analysis of The Trespasser is conducted along two partly related lines of thought: the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy as it is presented by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, and the process towards a Dionysian awareness that is put forward in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. As is pointed out in chapter three, the Apollonian-Dionysian contrast is reflected chiefly in the characterization, setting, symbolism, and to some degree also in the action of the novel. In chapter four the actual progression of the plot is dealt with in terms of a Zarathustran journey and the light symbolism associated with it. Moreover, some of Lawrence's early poems are discussed in connection with Nietzschean parallels found in The Trespasser, with a view to emphasizing the pervasive influence of Nietzsche's ideas on the young Lawrence.

Cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour and health promotion activities : a critical incident analysis

- Patients with head and neck cancer report several disease- and health-related problems before, during and a long time after completed treatment. Nurses have an important role in educating/supporting these patients about/through the disease and treatment so that they can attain well-being. This study describes the cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour in terms of critical incidents after nurses had given them care to promote health. The study had a qualitative, descriptive design and the method used was the critical incident technique. Twenty-one informants from the Nordic countries diagnosed with head and neck cancer were strategically selected. It was explained to the informants what a critical incident implies before the interviews took place; this was defined as a major event of great importance, an incident, which the informants still remember, due to its great importance for the outcome of their health and well-being. The nurses' behaviour was examined, and critical incidents were involved in 208 cases-150 positive and 58 negative ones-the number of incidents varying between three and 20 per informant. The nurses' health promotion activities or lack of such activities based on the patients' disease, treatment and symptoms, consisted of informing and instructing the patients as well as enabling their participation. Personal consideration and the nurses' cognisance, knowledge, competence, solicitude, demeanour and statements of understanding were found to be important. Continuous health promotion nursing interventions were of considerable value for the majority of this group of cancer patients. Oncology nurses could reconfirm and update the care of head and neck cancer patients by including health promotion activities in individual care plans. By more frequent use of health promotion models, such as the empowerment model, the nurses could identify and focus on those individuals who needed to alter their Life-style as well as tailor their approach towards these patient by setting goals for well-being and a healthy life-style.

A comparison of different methods for in-situ determination of heat losses from district heating pipes

- In the IEA Network Supervision project a special method, the Tx-factor method, is investigated. Several other methods exist for in-situ heat loss determination from district heating (DH) pipes. These methods have advantages and disadvantages compared to the Tx-factor method. It is the purpose of this work to make a comparison of the methods on a particular DH pipe. This makes this investigation special as in most previous work only one or very few methods have been applied on the same DH pipe. The purpose of this work was thus to go out to the site and make measurements of the heat loss from the DH pipe at this particular time of the year - an estimate of annual heat losses could then to be made afterwards. The aim of this work being to develop methods for practical applications not very sophisticated tools were used at the experimental site. This means that although very advanced equipment could have been used for determining the centre line and the depth of the DH pipe only measurement sticks, water levels and strings were used. For the same reasons the temperature sensors were installed by using measurement sticks

A method for using thermistors to measure thermal conductivity

- This report presents some measurements for determining thermal conductivity in different materials, using a single thermistor. This thermal conductivity measurement technique is appropriate for materials like fine-grained soils, gel-like materials such as silicon grease, and insulation materials. To verify the usefulness of this method, additional measurements are needed for several materials with well-known thermal conductivities, especially solid materials with thermal conductivity in the range of 0.5-2.5 W/m C.

- Although effective pain treatment is available for both cancer-related pain and acute post-operative pain, many patients suffer unnecessarily. The aim of this study was to evaluate post-operative patients' pain management. A descriptive survey study was conducted in a 460-bed acute hospital in the southwestern part of Sweden. One hundred post-operative inpatients, on their second post-operative day, took part in the study. They were consecutively selected from six surgical wards. Data were collected using an interview questionnaire designed by the American Pain Society and analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. At the time of the interview, 29 of the patients reported moderate to severe pain. Regarding the patients' worst pain experienced during the last 24 h, 79 of them reported moderate to very severe pain. Significant correlations were found between reported poor pain relief after pain medication and high intensity of pain both within the last 24 h and at the time of the interview. Eighty-three patients were satisfied with the way nurses treated their pain, while 64 patients were satisfied with the way physicians treated their pain. However, the higher the pain intensity experienced by the patients the less satisfied they were. The fact that patients do not know what kinds of relief are available may be one reason for the patients expressing satisfaction despite being in pain, another that the patients judge the kindness of the staff rather than their way of treating the pain. The field of pain management is rapidly changing requiring professional knowledge and experience in order to ensure pain management of good quality.

- This thesis investigates the literary texts by Elgström in relation to the political, cultural and literary context of the years between 1910 and 1920.Among her contemporaries Elgström was important, but today she is completely unknown. The literary criticism of her time is one of the reasons why her writings have been transferred to the periphery. When she made her début, Elgström was very positively received. After that, the literary critics were not capable of seeing the innovative aspects of her prose of that period and a discussion of incomprehensibility was initiated, in which words like hysterical, extatic and exalted became catchwords. It appears that Elgström created a form of expression that was not yet accepted in literature. The male dominated literary criticism was at a loss and Elgström was ignored.The prose she wrote during the period in question has a distinctly experimental approach. In her literary texts, that are violating the standard conventions, Elgström appears as a female modernist and creates alternative images in the form of feminist and pacifist utopias. Expressionism is the modernist movement that can mainly be related to her prose of this period. Like the expressionists, she expresses a new sense of life which is permeated with religious conceptions.In the study the female modernism is seen in a feminist perspective, as well as in a perspective of gender theory where networks constitute an important basis. Elgström often worked in female networks and thus she became an important figure in the context of female literature and female politics of that time.By showing Elgström's kinship with the nation-wide early Swedish modernism, the Finno-Swedish modernism and the German expressionism, as well as by illustrating Elgström's position in the context of female literature and female politics of that time, the study contributes to a different image of the 1910s.
