Self-rated health in women after their first myocardial infarction : A 12-month comparison between participation and nonparticipation in a cardiac rehabilitation programme

- Compared self-rated health among women who voluntarily did and did not participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) within 12 mo after their 1st myocardial infarction (MI). A nonrandomized evaluation study design including a pre- and posttest was implemented in 18 acute hospitals in the southwestern part of Sweden. 240 consecutively chosen women suffering their 1st MI at age 35-70 yrs completed 2 self-rated questionnaires at the onset of the MI and 12 mo later. The results showed that about 50% of the women took part in a CRP. Women who participated in a CRP reported more medical problems, such as anginal pain, and received more interventional cardiology 12 mo after the MI. Irrespective of participation in a CRP, the women succeeded with behavioral changes, such as giving up smoking, starting exercising, and becoming more diet conscious. The only benefits identified, related to CRP participation, were a higher back to work rate and normalized BP. These findings suggest that today's CRPs are not adapted to females in that they neither offer emotional support in the short term nor support a feeling of belonging in the long term and that the health care professionals are not aware of this.

- Increased attention towards the role of the board makes demands on reforms in the boardroom. In many countries, even small and medium-sized firms are experiencing the challenges of creating well functioning boards. In this paper the authors examine the importance of structures and processes in the boardroom of 302 small and medium-sized industrial firms in Sweden. The contribution of the paper is not only that it tries to explore the relationship between processes in the board and board performance, but also that it pays attention to the working structures that exist to maximize the board's task performance. In this study board task performance is measured as the performance of various control and service roles. There are two main findings. (1) The board members' involvement, and (2) the board's formal structures are important for the board's ability to perform its tasks effectively. The findings empirically support the arguments about the importance of a good and clearly defined working style in the board.

- In this paper, we investigate how to efficiently implement TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) on a wormhole switched network using a pure software solution in the end nodes. Transmission is conflict free on the time-slot level and hence deadlock free. On the sub- slot level, however, conflicts are possible when using early sending, a method we propose in order to reduce latency while still not hazarding the TDMA schedule. We propose a complete system to offer services for dynamic establishment of guaranteed periodic real-time virtual channels. Two different clock synchronization approaches for integration into the TDMA system are discussed. Implementation and experimental studies have been done on a cluster of PCs connected by a Myrinet network. Also, a case study with a radar signal processing application is presented to show the usability. A best-case reduction of the latency of up to 37 percent for 640 Byte messages by using early sending in Myrinet is shown in the case study. Source routed wormhole switching networks are assumed in the work but the results are applicable on some other categories of switched networks too.

- In this paper a novel ion current based estimation scheme for the in-cylinder pressure peak position (PPP) is proposed. A reliable estimate is constructed by appropriate signal processing based on local curvatures of the post flame phase of the ion current. The peak-finding algorithm is simple and easy to implement in an engine control unit for feedback control of the combustion phasing. Results on real data, sampled onboard a commercial car are presented. Further, the performance of the algorithm is compared to two state of the art algorithms for PPP estimation from the ion current. The comparison shows that the algorithm presented in this paper outperforms its competitors. Copyright © 2000 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

- A model based soft sensor that estimates the location of the in-cylinder pressure peak from the ion current is described. The soft sensor uses a neural network algorithm and has been implemented in a SAAB 9000 low-pressure turbo production car. It estimates the pressure peak location, in real time, during normal highway driving with an error of 2-3 crank angle degrees. The soft sensor has been tested during normal Scandinavian weather conditions, with a relative air humidity of about 50%, as well as when water is sprayed into the intake manifold, resulting in approximately 100% relative humidity. The neural network based soft sensor is significantly better than that of another method, based on nonlinear Gaussian curve fits, for the same task.
