  • Unsupervised colour image segmentation applied to printing quality assessment
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Image and Vision Computing. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0262-8856 .- 1872-8138. ; 23:4, s. 417-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an option for colour image segmentation applied to printing quality assessment in offset lithographic printing by measuring an average ink dot size in halftone pictures. The segmentation is accomplished in two stages through classification of image pixels. In the first stage, rough image segmentation is performed. The results of the first segmentation stage are then utilized to collect a balanced training data set for learning refined parameters of the decision rules. The developed software is successfully used in a printing shop to assess the ink dot size on paper and printing plates.

  • Using Multicoloured Halftone Screens for Offset Print Quality Monitoring
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the newspaper printing industry, offset is the dominating printing method and the use of multicolour printing has increased rapidly in newspapers during the last decade. The offset printing process relies on the assumption that an uniform film of ink of right thickness is transferred onto the printing areas. The quality of reproduction of colour images in offset printing is dependent on a number of parameters in a chain of steps and in the end it is the amount and the distribution of ink deposited on the substrate that create the sensation and thus the perceived colours. We identify three control points in the offset printing process and present methods for assessing the printing process quality in two of these points:• Methods for determining if the printing plates carry the correct image• Methods for determining the amount of ink deposited onto the newsprintA new concept of colour impression is introduced as a measure of the amount of ink deposited on the newsprint. Two factors contribute to values of the colour impression, the halftone dot-size and ink density. Colour impression values are determined on gray-bars using a CCD-camera based system. Colour impression values can also be determined in an area containing an arbitrary combination of cyan magenta and yellow inks. The correct amount of ink is known either from a reference print or from prepress information. Thus, the deviation of the amount of ink can be determined that can be used as control value by a press operator or as input to a control system. How a closed loop controller can be designed based on the colour impression values is also shown. It is demonstrated that the methods developed can be used for off-line print quality monitoring and ink feed control, or preferably in an online system in a newspaper printing press.

  • Psychosocial aspects of chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 27:12, s. 675-683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To study the impact on health status as measured by SF-36 in groups of subjects having chronic musculoskeletal pain with different degree of generalization: No chronic pain (NCP), chronic regional pain (CRP), chronic widespread pain (CWP), CWP with a stricter 'Manchester' definition (CWP-M), and clinically defined fibromyalgia (FM). The study also examines the association between psychosocial and lifestyle background variables, and these pain-groups.METHOD: A cross-sectional study with a postal survey to 3928 subjects, constituting a representative sample of the adult general population, followed by clinical examination in a selected group of subjects with CWP. CWP and FM were diagnosed according to ACR 1990 fibromyalgia criteria. Health status was measured by SF-36 Health Survey.RESULTS: Patients with CWP, CWP-M, and FM were found to present with more severe impairment of health status than the other two population groups. Several psychosocial factors, such as belonging to a lower socio-economic group, being an immigrant, living in a compromised housing area, having lower educational level, experiencing lower social support and having a family history of chronic pain, were associated with the populations with CWP and FM.CONCLUSIONS: The spectrum of impact on health and association to background variables, with respect to a stricter definition of CWP, indicates that these factors are important to attend to in the understanding and management of CWP and FM.© 2005 Taylor & Francis Group Ltd.

  • Tales from the Crypt – Organizing IT-Business in the Dotcom era
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IRIS28. - Kristiansand : IRIS Association.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report on a narrative study aimed at capturing consultants’ experiences of mergers – from an organizational and cultural perspective – during the so-called dotcom era. In the paper we focus on the problems that resulted from mergers between firms with totally different views on what it means to organize IT-business. The mergers studied led to cultural clashes in how to organize IT-projects, like different ways of managing, organizing, working, collaborating and experiencing the organization, but also implicit practices like dress-code, attitudes, lifestyle, norms and values. The empirical data is collected with the help of storytelling session where consultants tell stories about own experiences or stories that they have heard from colleagues. Stories are presented and discussed related to different themes, such as values, practices, culture/identity, and business models. We propose that these experiences of failed acquisitions and mergers embed important knowledge of the practices and problems of the organizing of IT-businesses.

  • Perception of tactile massage as a complement to other forms of pain relief in rheumatic disease
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Musculoskeletal Care. - West Sussex, UK : John Wiley & Sons. - 1478-2189 .- 1557-0681. ; 3:3, s. 157-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate how patients with rheumatic disease perceive tactile massage as a complement to other pain alleviation methods. Methods: A phenomenographic approach with semi-structured interviews was employed on a strategic sample of 14 patients with various rheumatic diseases, both inflammatory and non-inflammatory, who had been admitted to Spenshult Rheumatic Hospital. Results: Three descriptive categories with a total of nine conceptions emerged. The descriptive categories were: experiencing alleviation, experiencing trust, and gaining insight. Experiencing alleviation described how patients experience relaxation, pleasure and respite. Experiencing trust described how patients experience a sense of security, confirmation and inner peace. Gaining insight described how patients get to know themselves, see possibilities, and experience wholeness. Conclusions: When caring for patients who have a chronic illness involving considerable changes to their lives, it is important for health professionals not only to be aware of their physical needs but also to take account of the whole person. This study demonstrates the importance of offering patients a complement to conventional treatment. Tactile massage is a method that promotes a holistic view of patients with chronic pain as well as allowing them to find a new focus in terms of the disease and how they cope with it in their daily lives.

  • Combining Biometric Evidence for Person Authentication
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Advanced Studies in Biometrics. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783540262046 - 9783540286387 ; , s. 1-18
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Humans are excellent experts in person recognition and yet they do not perform excessively well in recognizing others only based on one modality such as single facial image. Experimental evidence of this fact is reported concluding that even human authentication relies on multimodal signal analysis. The elements of automatic multimodal authentication along with system models are then presented. These include the machine experts as well as machine supervisors. In particular, fingerprint and speech based systems will serve as illustration. A signal adaptive supervisor based on the input biometric signal quality is evaluated.

  • Design Space Exploration of Wireless Multihop Networks
  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores the feasible design space of wireless multihop networks and identifies fundamental design parameters. In the process of exploring it is important to ignore all details and instead take a holistic view. This means that all protocol details are overseen, all details of radio wave propagation models are overseen and the system is modelled strictly on an architectural level. From a theoretical information perspective, there is a limit to the capacity that a certain bandwidth and a certain signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver can provide. This limit is approximated as a volume in the time-frequency-space domain. A single transmission is represented as an occupied volume in this domain. A wireless multihop network covers a spatial area, and the question is how multiple numbers of transmission volumes can be fit into a given limited spatial area. This volume fitting should be done in order to maximize the overall performance or to trade available resources to favour a specific characteristic in the wireless multihop network. The volume model is used for the design space exploration of a wireless multihop network. It is argued that the fault tolerance and the energy gain achieved in a multihop topology are its strength as compared to a single-hop architecture. It is further shown that the energy gain is achieved at the expense of delay and a greater end-to-end error probability. This indicates that these parameters must be very carefully balanced in order to gain in the global overall performance perspective. It can further be concluded that the overall spatial capacity is increased as a result of the spatial channel reuse in a multihop topology. On the other hand, it is also shown that the multihop topology introduces a rather stringent geometrical capacity limitation when the number of nodes of a wireless multihop network is increased. The dynamics (e.g. node mobility, changing radio channels etc.) of a large scale wireless multihop network is also a limiting factor. The nodes’ mobility creates a knowledge horizon beyond which very little can be known about the present network topology.
