  • Dialogue competence : a necessity for school improvement?
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to describe how tools used in action research can promote learning in relation to Vygotsky’s concept of the zone of proximal development (zpd). In the study, Vygotsky’s (2001) theory of the zone of proximal development was used to describe how knowledge development can be manifested in a work of change. The data production took place in a school improvement project where fifty teachers participated over a period of three years. Tools for data production, and at the same time tools for learning, were: facilitation, shadowing and individual log book writing. The tools were initially analysed from three aspects: as used individually, as used in pairs or in a group, and in relation to the zone of proximal development. The responses were divided into confirmations and challenges. Although the participants expressed a need for challenges, they were in practice more prone to confirm one another. This gap showed the importance of analysing and openly talking about the difference between confirmation and challenge in zpd. In the joint analysis work, differences were elucidated between using tools outside zpd and learning through tools within zpd. Knowledge was developed in both situations but at different levels of reflection. In relation to zpd, the importance of colleagues was emphasised. In her/his competence development, a teacher is dependent on one or several critical friends (cf Handal, 2007) to be challenged as a knowledge developer. Giving response proved more difficult in virtual meetings than in physical meetings.

  • The Best Listening Environment In School According To Hard-of-hearing Pupils
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - Oslo : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 10:1, s. 29-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to illuminate the listening strategies which are revealed when pupils described their choice of the “best listening environment” in school. The study comprises 165 hard-of-hearing pupils from five compulsory schools in Sweden. The results are mainly based on the pupils’ drawings and their attached written explanations. The pupils’ explanations are analysed in the form of four different needs associated with being a listener: a “cleaned-up” sound environment, visual support, conversation rules and comfortable surroundings. The explanations can be seen as reflective knowledge and experiences of listening strategies. Not every pupil in this study has a verbalised awareness of listening strategies in all categories but, as a community, they describe a lot of experiences and knowledge to be shared. How to take the role of listener and continuously develop new strategies might be a matter of self-image.

  • Use of perioperative dialogues with children undergoing day surgery.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of advanced nursing. - Oxford : Wiley. - 1365-2648 .- 0309-2402. ; 62:1, s. 96-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: This paper is a report of a study to explore what it means for children to attend hospital for day surgery. BACKGROUND: Hospitalization is a major stressor for children. Fear of separation, unfamiliar routines, anaesthetic/operation expectations/experiences and pain and needles are sources of children's negative reactions. METHOD: A grounded theory study was carried out during 2005-2006 with 15 boys and five girls (aged 6-9 years) scheduled for elective day surgery. Data were collected using tape-recorded interviews that included a perioperative dialogue, participant observations and pre- and postoperative drawings. FINDINGS: A conceptual model was generated on the basis of the core category 'enduring inflicted hospital distress', showing that the main problem for children having day surgery is that they are forced into an unpredictable and distressful situation. Pre-operatively, the children do not know what to expect, as described in the category 'facing an unknown reality'. Additional categories show that they perceive a 'breaking away from daily routines' and that they are 'trying to gain control' over the situation. During the perioperative period, the categories 'losing control' and 'co-operating despite fear and pain' are present and intertwined. Post-operatively, the categories 'breathing a sigh of relief' and 'regaining normality in life' emerged. CONCLUSION: The perioperative dialogue used in our study, if translated into clinical practice, might therefore minimize distress and prepare children for the 'unknown' stressor that hospital care often presents. Further research is needed to compare anxiety and stress levels in children undergoing day surgery involving the perioperative dialogue and those having 'traditional' anaesthetic care.

  • Profitability of sparse district heating
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 85:9, s. 867-877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The expansion of district heating into areas of low heat densities (heat sparse areas) constitutes a challenge due to the higher distribution costs. The profitability of sparse district heating has been analysed from actual investments in 74 areas with 3227 one-family houses connected to district heating between 2000 and 2004 in Göteborg, Sweden. The profitability was estimated from a probable price model, a typical marginal heat generation cost, and the investments from the actual connections made. The analysis identified factors as the linear heat density and heat sold per house explaining the main variations in profitability. The profitability analysis was concluded with a competition analysis. The main conclusion is that sparse district heating is possible when reaching low investment costs for the local distribution network and low marginal costs for the heat generation. In Sweden, the general competitiveness of sparse district heating is facilitated by the high consumption taxes for fuel oil, natural gas, and electricity. Hence, it should be more difficult to introduce sparse district heating in other countries with low energy taxes. © 2008.

  • Sparse district-heating in Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 85:7, s. 555-564
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a review of the sparse district-heating research programme undertaken in Sweden between 2002 and 2006. The goal of the programme was to increase the future competitiveness for district heat in low heat density areas, e.g., suburban single-family houses and small villages. Such areas are unfavourable, since revenues from heat sold are low compared with the investment cost for the local distribution network. In Sweden, district heat has a dominant position in the heat market for residential and service-sector buildings. In order for the business to grow, it is necessary to increase the rate of expansion in the detached-house segment. This is why the programme was initiated. The extent of the programme was set at € 3.6 million with equal financing from the Swedish District-Heating Association and the Swedish Energy-Agency. The research was carried out in three phases: a state of the art survey; a development phase focused on productivity gains where new research on both technology and customer interaction was performed; and finally a demonstration phase where new methods were tested in full-scale field operation. The programme has shown that the Swedish district-heating industry needs to adjust in order to reach a higher profitability for sparse district-heating investments. Tradition from large-scale high-density district heating is hard to scale to fit sparse district-heating systems. For example, the construction becomes very labour intensive and the industry is weak when it comes to market-oriented business logic, sales and private customer interaction. Innovation seems to be a way forward and active management of innovations is a way to create increased value of the investments. Other keys to improving the profitability of sparse district-heating investments are more efficient working routines (resulting in higher productivity) and revised ways of customer communications. These seem more important than increasing efficiency in district-heating technology. © 2007.
