Acute coronary syndrome : social support and coping ability on admittance
- 2008

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Aim: To compare social support and coping ability in acute coronary syndrome patients at the time of the cardiac event with a healthy community-based sample, with regard to age, sex, education and marital status.Method: The study comprised 241 patients and 316 healthy controls. The participants answered a self-administered questionnaire that included three well-established scales. Multiple logistic regression was used in the analysis to compare the health situation between the patients and controls. Results: Persons suffering from acute coronary syndrome rated emotional support significantly lower than the healthy controls. However, there were no differences between the two groups in terms of socio-demographic variables. Conclusion: This study indicates that social support may be a predictor of acute coronary syndrome.

Considerations of the concept of infant health : a literature review
- 2006
-
Ingår i: Early Child Development and Care. - Oxon, UK : Routledge. - 0300-4430 .- 1476-8275. ; 176:6, s. 575-589

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- This study examined a wide range of literature in order to describe factors associated with the concept of infant health. The design of the study is a literature review examining 21 research studies, written in the English language. The study explored which factors were found to exert an influence on the concept of infant health. The result showed that the concept infant health is dependent on many factors but what seems to exert an influence are foremost maternal health and well-being, the family's health care utilization and the parental assessment of their own health. Additional studies are needed to fully understand the concept of infant health. The need for an infant definition that empowers infant health arises because, if a common ground is not clearly established, miscommunication may arise. Furthermore, there is a need to initiate a model for infant health.

A Comparative Study of Fingerprint Image-Quality Estimation Methods

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- One of the open issues in fingerprint verification is the lack of robustness against image-quality degradation. Poor-quality images result in spurious and missing features, thus degrading the performance of the overall system. Therefore, it is important for a fingerprint recognition system to estimate the quality and validity of the captured fingerprint images. In this work, we review existing approaches for fingerprint image-quality estimation, including the rationale behind the published measures and visual examples showing their behavior under different quality conditions. We have also tested a selection of fingerprint image-quality estimation algorithms. For the experiments, we employ the BioSec multimodal baseline corpus, which includes 19 200 fingerprint images from 200 individuals acquired in two sessions with three different sensors. The behavior of the selected quality measures is compared, showing high correlation between them in most cases. The effect of low-quality samples in the verification performance is also studied for a widely available minutiae-based fingerprint matching system.

Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Fingerprint image quality affects heavily the performance of fingerprint recognition systems. This paper reviews existing approaches for fingerprint image quality computation. We also implement, test and compare a selection of them using the MCYT database including 9000 fingerprint images. Experimental results show that most of the algorithms behave similarly.

An enhanced Gabor filter-based segmentation algorithm for fingerprint recognition systems
- 2005
-
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- An imponant step in fingerprint recognition is the segmentation of the region of interest. In this paper, we present an enhanced approach for fingerprint segmentation based on the response of eight oriented Gabor filters. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated in terms of decision error trade-off curves of an overall verification system. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.

Automatic Measures for Predicting Performance in Off-line Signature
- 2007
-
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Performance in terms of accuracy is one of the most important goal of a biometric system. Hence, having a measure which is able to predict the performance with respect to a particular sample of interest is specially useful, and can be exploited in a number of ways. In this paper, we present two automatic measures for predicting the performance in off-line signature verification. Results obtained on a sub-corpus of the MCYT signature database confirms a relationship between the proposed measures and system error rates measured in terms of Equal Error Rate (EER), False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR). © 2007 IEEE.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- We report on experiments for the fingerprint modality conducted during the First BioSecure Residential Workshop. Two reference systems for fingerprint verification have been tested together with two additional non-reference systems. These systems follow different approaches of fingerprint processing and are discussed in detail. Fusion experiments involving different combinations of the available systems are presented. The experimental results show that the best recognition strategy involves both minutiae-based and correlation-based measurements. Regarding the fusion experiments, the best relative improvement is obtained when fusing systems that are based on heterogeneous strategies for feature extraction and/or matching. The best combinations of two/three/four systems always include the best individual systems whereas the best verification performance is obtained when combining all the available systems.

Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Although several image quality measures have been proposed for fingerprints, no work has taken into account the differences among capture devices, and how these differences impact on the image quality. In this paper, several representative measures for assessing the quality fingerprint images are compared using an optical and a capacitive sensor. The capability to discriminate between images of different quality and its relationship with the verification performance is studied. We report differences depending on the sensor, and interesting relationships between sensor technology and features used for quality assessment are also pointed out. ©2007 IEEE.
