    • The primary aim of this article is to test the relevance of phonetic symbolism for people's conceptions of gender connotations in first names. Students were asked to grade their perceptions of seven female and male names. Primarily for female names certain phonetic properties correlated with higher perceived degree of femininity. However, the study also showed resistance towards gendering first names and attempts of "undoing gender".© Aldrin 2020

    • This article explores how a heterogenous group of first year university students perceive writing in general, academic writing in specific, as well as their own writing proficiency. A questionnaire (n 93) was created basing on theories on academic literacy and writing psychology. The results show varying attitudes among the students which highlight questions of the dimensions of writing, identity and group affiliations. Gender was of little importance, whereas age and self-stated writing skills correlated to some extent with the results. The small scale of the study does not permit far-reaching conclusions, but the results indicate attitudes that could have importance for the development of academic literacy. The study can be used as a start of departure for interventions that facilitate for groups with different backgrounds to participate in higher education. ©2020 Emilia Sturm Aldrin, Monica Eklund och Heike Peter.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Swedish school curriculum it states that the school must impersonate as well as convey certain founding values for the Swedish society, such as individual freedom and integrity, equality, solidarity and understanding of cultural pluralism. This paper is about an ongoing research project on how social and cultural representations in educational materials contribute to impersonate these commitments with a focus on the use of names. Naming strategies have been highly neglected or treated in a simplified, unsystematic way in previous studies in the field. This project analyses the kinds of names that are used for people and places in educational materials, which kinds of referents are named as well as not named and how the use of names contributes to creating images of social and cultural identities. The data consists of educational materials within three school subjects (Swedish, social studies and mathematics) with a focus on contemporary as well as diachronic patterns. The analytical approach is influenced by critical as well as positive discourse analysis.

  • Alienation och Arbete. Unga behovsanställdas villkor i den flexibla kapitalismen
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how flexible capitalism, drawing from the case of on-call employees, influences the ability to control life and work and affects relationships with other people, both inside and outside work; and to investigate how this can be understood in terms of alienation. A subsidiary aim that emerges from this investigation is to develop existing alienation theories in a way that enables them to be used to understand human existence under flexible capitalism. Alienation is understood as a process in which something that should be connected has lost its connection: it is a relation of relationlessness. This raises three questions: How can we decide what a relation “ought” to be? What relations are being alienated and what is causing these relations to become relationless? In the thesis I use an immanent perspective to identify the “ought” in the studied context: the capitalist mode of production. For value to exist it is required that man is, as Marx puts it in Capital, “the free proprietor of his own labour-capacity, hence of his own person”. Thus, there is a premise of self-determination in capitalism. A premise which, because of man’s need to create value and the fact that her activity must be subordinated to the value logic, cannot be realized. This applies to everyone in our society, capitalists and labourers alike, and alienates man from her activity, herself, others and her product. This is understood as abstract alienation. On a concrete and specific level the control of how to reach this value-goal and to what extent this affects the individual’s life may differ depending on how value production takes place and the individual’s position in production. I call this concrete alienation and it can be understood as the concrete expression of the abstract alienation. In this way, alienation is neither a purely structural nor a purely subjective phenomenon. It can be both. Following changes in the accumulation regime the concrete alienation has transformed during the last decades, which is expressed in the on-call employees’ situation. Based on an analysis of 17 in-depth interviews I conclude that that their subjective motifs of being in the employment differ and their employment is objectively shaped differently. The objective and subjective dimensions are the basis for understanding on-call employees’ alienation at a concrete level. Drawing from Jaeggi’s qualified subjectivism I argue that since a premise of capitalism is self-determination, the individual must have a say in their situation and experience. If an individual feels that she can’t control her life she is thus alienated from the premise of self-determination. If she feels that she can control her life but this feeling is not realised, meaning that there is no objective possibility to control or steer her life, there is no self-determination and thus alienation persists even though it is not perceived. The result tells us that on-call employment can be used both as a way to increase the freedom and self-determination over one’s life and hinder it, it can instrumentalise life and work in a specific way, and it can hinder the control over social relations, both in and outside of work. As a result, even though they all experience abstract alienation, their level of concrete alienation differs.

  • Efficacy of Imbalanced Data Handling Methods on Deep Learning for Smart Homes Environments
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: SN Computer Science. - Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 2661-8907 .- 2662-995X. ; 1:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human activity recognition as an engineering tool as well as an active research field has become fundamental to many applications in various fields such as health care, smart home monitoring and surveillance. However, delivering sufficiently robust activity recognition systems from sensor data recorded in a smart home setting is a challenging task. Moreover, human activity datasets are typically highly imbalanced because generally certain activities occur more frequently than others. Consequently, it is challenging to train classifiers from imbalanced human activity datasets. Deep learning algorithms perform well on balanced datasets, yet their performance cannot be promised on imbalanced datasets. Therefore, we aim to address the problem of class imbalance in deep learning for smart home data. We assess it with Activities of Daily Living recognition using binary sensors dataset. This paper proposes a data level perspective combined with a temporal window technique to handle imbalanced human activities from smart homes in order to make the learning algorithms more sensitive to the minority class. The experimental results indicate that handling imbalanced human activities from the data-level outperforms algorithms level and improved the classification performance. © The Author(s) 2020

  • Efficient Activity Recognition in Smart Homes Using Delayed Fuzzy Temporal Windows on Binary Sensors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE journal of biomedical and health informatics. - Piscataway : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2168-2194 .- 2168-2208. ; 24:2, s. 387-395
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human activity recognition has become an active research field over the past few years due to its wide application in various fields such as health-care, smart home monitoring, and surveillance. Existing approaches for activity recognition in smart homes have achieved promising results. Most of these approaches evaluate real-time recognition of activities using only sensor activations that precede the evaluation time (where the decision is made). However, in several critical situations, such as diagnosing people with dementia, “preceding sensor activations” are not always sufficient to accurately recognize the inhabitant's daily activities in each evaluated time. To improve performance, we propose a method that delays the recognition process in order to include some sensor activations that occur after the point in time where the decision needs to be made. For this, the proposed method uses multiple incremental fuzzy temporal windows to extract features from both preceding and some oncoming sensor activations. The proposed method is evaluated with two temporal deep learning models (convolutional neural network and long short-term memory), on a binary sensor dataset of real daily living activities. The experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method achieves significantly better results than the real-time approach, and that the representation with fuzzy temporal windows enhances performance within deep learning models. © Copyright 2020 IEEE

  • OE-CAM : A Hybrid Opto-Electronic Content Addressable Memory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Journal. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE. - 1943-0655. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A content addressable memory (CAM) is a type of memory that implements a parallel search engine at its core. A CAM takes as an input a value and outputs the address where this value is stored in case of a match. CAMs are used in a wide range of applications including networking, cashing, neuromorphic associative memories, multimedia, and data analytics. Here, we introduce a novel opto-electronic CAM (OE-CAM) utilizing the integrated silicon photonic platform. In our approach, we explore the performance of an experimental OE-CAM and verify the efficiency of the device at 25 Gbit/s while maintaining the bit integrity under noise conditions. We show that OE-CAM enables a) two orders of magnitude faster search functionality resulting in b) a five orders of magnitude lower power-delay-product compared to CAMs implementations based on other emerging technologies. This remarkable performance potential is achieved by utilizing i) a high parallelism of wavelength-division-multiplexing in the optical domain, combined with ii) 10's of GHz-fast opto-electronic components, packaged in iii) integrated photonics for 10-100's ps-short communication delays. We further verify the upper optical input power limit of this OE-CAM to be given by parasitic nonlinearities inside the silicon waveguides, and the minimal detectable optical power at the back-end photoreceiver's responsivity given channel noise. Such energy-efficient and short-delay OE-CAMs could become a key component of functional photonic-augmented ASICS, co-processors, or smart sensors. © IEEE

  • Soft-Biometrics Estimation In the Era of Facial Masks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 International Conference of the Biometrics Special Interest Group (BIOSIG). - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE. - 9783885797005 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the use of images from face parts to estimate soft-biometrics indicators. Partial face occlusion is common in unconstrained scenarios, and it has become mainstream during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the use of masks. Here, we apply existing pre-trained CNN architectures, proposed in the context of the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge, to the tasks of gender, age, and ethnicity estimation. Experiments are done with 12007 images from the Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW) database. We show that such off-the-shelf features can effectively estimate soft-biometrics indicators using only the ocular region. For completeness, we also evaluate images showing only the mouth region. In overall terms, the network providing the best accuracy only suffers accuracy drops of 2-4% when using the ocular region, in comparison to using the entire face. Our approach is also shown to outperform in several tasks two commercial off-the-shelf systems (COTS) that employ the whole face, even if we only use the eye or mouth regions. © 2020 German Computer Association (Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V.).

  • Predicting state of health and end of life for batteries in hybrid energy buses
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 30th European Safety and Reliability Conference and the 15th Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Conference. - Singapore : Research Publishing Services. - 9789811485930 ; , s. 1231-1231
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a major ongoing transition from utilizing fossil fuel to electricity in buses for enabling a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and connected transportation ecosystem. Batteries are expensive, up to 30% of the total cost for the vehicle (A. Fotouhi 2016), and considered safety-critical components for electric vehicles (EV). As they deteriorate over time, monitoring the health status and performing the maintenance accordingly in a proactive manner is crucial to achieving not only a safe and sustainable transportation system but also a cost-effective operation and thus a greater market satisfaction. As a widely used indicator, the State of Health (SOH) is a measurement that reflects the current capability of the battery in comparison to an ideal condition. Accurate estimation of SOH is important to evaluate the validity of the batteries for the intended application and can be utilized as a proxy to estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) and predict the end-of-life (EOL) of batteries for maintenance planning. The SOH is computed via an on-board computing device, i.e. battery management unit (BMU), which is commonly developed based on controlled experiments and many of them are physical-model based approaches that only depend on the internal parameters of the battery (B. Pattipati 2008; M. H. Lipu 2018). However, the deterioration processes of batteries in hybrid and full-electric buses depend not only on the designing parameters but also on the operating environment and usage patterns of the vehicle. Therefore, utilizing multiple data sources to estimate the health status and EOL of the batteries is of potential internet. In this study, a data-driven prognostic method is developed to estimate SOH and predict EOL for batteries in heterogeneous fleets of hybrid buses, using various types of data sources, e.g. physical configuration of the vehicle, deployment information, on-board sensor readings, and diagnostic fault codes. A set of new features was generated from the existing sensor readings by inducing artificial resets on each battery replacement. A neural network-based regression model achieved accurate estimates of battery SOH status. Another network was used to indicate the EOL of batteries and the result was evaluated using battery replacement based on the current maintenance strategy. © ESREL2020-PSAM15 Organizers. • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 30th European Safety and Reliability Conference and the 15th Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Conference. - Singapore : Research Publishing Services. - 9789811485930 ; , s. 1068-1068

    • Monitoring the condition, detecting faults, and modeling the degradation of industrial equipment are important challenges in Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) field. Our solution to the challenge demonstrated a multi-stage approach for detecting faults in a group of identical industrial equipment, composed of four identical interconnected components, that have been deployed to the evolving environment with changes in operational and environmental conditions. In the first stage, a stacked ensemble of heterogeneous classifiers was applied to predict the state of each component of the equipment individually. In the second stage, a low pass filter was applied to smoothen the predictions cast by stacked ensembles, utilizing temporal information of the prediction sequence. © ESREL2020-PSAM15 Organizers.
