- Fibre concrete has been used in Sweden and many other countries during more than 50 years despite that it has not been fully recognized by the code writers. In Sweden, the use of steel fibre concrete is extensive in two applications; shotcrete for strengthening rock tunnels and industrial concrete floors. This paper describes briefly these two applications as well as two other rather common applications; precast concrete elements and concrete overlays. Recent European and national Swedish standardization works have opened the fibre market for structural applications such as beams and elevated slabs. This paper summarizes the new Swedish standard. A problem with fibre concrete is the large scatter that is connected to the flexural tests on SFC beams that constitute the bases of design. The Swedish standard includes a novel concept of discerning between statically determinate structures and statically indeterminate structures. The latter has ability to stress redistribution and this beneficial circumstance has been taken into account by including a magnification factor in the design. Finally, the paper summarizes Swedish field tests on a column-supported SFC slab. The results were promising and have constituted support for the Swedish design.

- Testing fibre concrete is usually leading to relatively large scatter in the measuring results. The traditional way of designing structures is to base the design on characteristic strength values that may be determined by subtracting a multiple of the scatter from the average strength value. This procedure makes fibre concrete structures less competitive. In real fibre concrete structures, this scatter may be of less importance partly through averaging strength across long distances and partly through redistribution of stresses in statically indeterminate structures. The aim of this paper is to quantify these effects and to develop recommendations assisting the designer to consider these effects in practical design of fibre concrete structures. The problem has been studied by investigating and comparing the effect of scatter on simply supported beams, continuous beams, elevated slabs, and slabs-on-grade. The calculations show that the beneficial effect of increased crack lengths in statically indeterminate beams and even more in slabs is pronounced in cases with large scatter. Consequently, it may be possible to partly compensate the reduction in characteristic strength of fibre concrete due to large scatter by a magnification factor taking into account the reduced risk of a continuous weak section along the prolonged crack lengths that characterize statically indeterminate structures. The coefficients determined in this investigation have been utilized in the new Swedish Standard SS 812310:2014 (2014).
