- This paper discusses how archaeological heritage can function as a focus of community identity in a rural setting, and what happens when an original monument is replaced by a copy. The case study presented deals with a visually striking ancient monument on the island of Öland, SE Sweden, that was accidentally broken in 2014 and later reconstructed. This case thus touches upon concepts such as authenticity, age value and aura of ancient objects and monuments, but also community engagement in local heritage and the ability of archaeology in adding value to existing sites and monuments. It is concluded that a dissonance often exists between the official assessment of heritage value, and values appreciated by the local community. In the latter, social value can be seen as connected to the concept of pastness, where a range of factors both material and immaterial combine to render a monument or a site its perceived significance.

- This report presents the results from an archaeological excavation in 2020 of an Iron Age house foundation at Gamla Skogsby, Öland, Sweden. The investigated area is rich in prehistoric remains, not least from the mid-Iron Age and the Migration Period which is the period of concern here (c. AD 400–550). The excavation follows that which was initiated at the site in 2019 (Papmehl-Dufay 2020). The house investigated is part of a large farm, just next to an exceptionally large building usually regarded as a cheiftains hall. The finds from the excavation are numerous, including a large animal bone assemblage as well as unusually large amounts of household pottery. As was the case during the excavation in 2019, the bulk of the finds are of ”household” character with an emphasis on preparation of food. The results of the osteological analysis reveal an unusually large proportion of pig bones, which was an important source of meat in connection to Iron Age feasting. Several deposits of animal bones were found suggesting elaborate ritual activities at the site, including the offering of several sheep in connection to the building of the house as well as the offering of a horse in connection to its abandonment. The pottery assemblage includes a large number of vessels of which unusually large portions are preserved, allowing for a detailed analysis of vessel shapes in the Migration Period.The results reinforces the idea of Gamla Skogsby as a major farm in the area in the Migration period, potentially relevant in discussion on the social and cultural context of the Sandby borg massacre that ocurred on eastern land in the same period.

- This report presents the results from an archaeological excavation of an Iron Age house foundation at Gamla Skogsby, Öland, Sweden. The investigated area is rich in prehistoric remains, not least from the mid-Iron Age which is the period of concern here (c. AD 400–550). The house investigated is part of a large farm, just next to an exceptionally large building usually regarded as a cheiftains hall. The finds and observations from the excavation suggest that the house concerned is not a small square building as was previously suggested, but is in fact a long house with finds of ”household” character and some emphasis on preparation of food. An elaborate fireplace construction involving a large limstone slab and two heavy posts possibly supporting a roasting spit was found, together with large amounts of carbonised organic remains possibly consisting of animal fats.

- This paper deals broadly with biographical approaches to the archaeology of objects andplaces, and discusses the parts played by memory and remembrance in creating, maintainingand changing meaning in connection with places. The concepts of place and placeattachment are briefly reviewed, and the various ways in which places achieve meaningare discussed. In particular, changes in the meaning of place as a result of specific eventsare explored. This is exemplified by a modern place where drastic changes in meaning occurredas a result of individual events and their remembrance. The identities of places arediscussed, and the possibility of multiple places to be temporarily overlapping yet sharingthe same physical space is explored. These aspects of meaning of place are then appliedto a prehistoric setting, where the occurrence of megaliths on the eastern periphery of theTRB culture, on the island of Öland, is discussed.

- This report presents the results from an archaeological trial excavation performed by Kalmar County Museum during two days in August 2008 at Pettersholm, western Öland, southeast Sweden. The area is planned for the construction of two houses, and the investigation aimed at delimiting the occurrence of prehistoric and historic remains within the area and document the features encountered. The excavation resulted in one single sunken feature, consisting of a pit c 0,65 m in diameter and containing the almost complete skeletal remains of a calf and in addition six flint flakes and a handful of fragments of burnt bone. The calf was 14C-dated to c 3500-3100 cal BC, corresponding to the late Early and early Middle Neolithic. This makes it the oldest securely dated find of cattle on Öland, and actually the oldest complete skeleton of a cow encountered in all of Sweden. Since no other sunken features were found within the area and since the ”cow pit” was completely excavated, no further archaeological work is suggested. The find however makes the area adjacent to the west a potential hotspot for future excavations, since the pit probably is connected to a larger context extending in this direction.

- This paper deals with the topic of cultural identity in archaeology, and especially the significance of pottery in the Pitted Ware culture. A brief discussion on the theoretical aspects of cultural identity in general and its relation to ceramics in particular is followed by a short presentation of the Neolithic remains on the island of Öland in the Baltic. The Pitted Ware site in Köpingsvik is further discussed, and the pottery from an excavation at the site in 1950 is presented in some detail. A key term in the ceramic study is variation, and it is argued that previous research often have held a biased view of the ceramic craft of the Pitted Ware culture, presenting it as primitive and rough as opposed to the more elaborate and aesthetic Funnel Beaker pottery. In line with this view the ceramic assemblages of the Pitted Ware culture is often presented as homogeneous and unproblematic, and interpreted as reflecting one-sided activities supposedly related to subsistence and economy. Instead, it is here argued that Pitted Ware assemblages in fact display large variations, with numerous different vessel- and ware types. The occurrence of miniature vessels is seen as an indication of the social significance of the ceramic craft. The Pitted Ware pottery, it is argued, reflect a differentiated and dynamic craft, most probably highly valued by its contemporary society and yet with a position very different from that of the partly contemporary TRB culture. The differences go further than vessel shapes and styles of decoration, and should rather be studied on the level of social meaning attached to the ceramic craft itself and its products.

- This paper deals with Late Neolithic burials found on the Swedish Island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. A brief review of the hitherto known burials from this period on the Island is followed by the presentation of a recent find at Björnhovda, southwest Öland. Here at least one, and possibly as many as five, Late Neolithic traces of burials were found and excavated during autumn 2008. The site is presented in some detail, and these burials are compared to the evidence presented in the brief review of Late Neolithic burial practices on Öland. In conclusion it is shown that burial customs during the Late Neolithic were greatly varied in this area, although a number of features can be identified which appear in the majority of the burials and thus possibly indicate some form of common customs.
