  • The relationship between deformation and mineral composition in some fold structures

    • An attempt is made to correlate the chemical compositions of certain minerals from different parts of fold structures with the theoretical stress pattern. A partial analysis was made on amphibole, plagioclase, garnet, diopside, sphalerite and biotite with a microprobe and the theoretical stress pattern was calculated by means of the finite-element method (FEM). Two of the four fold structures investigated show a systematic variation in the chemistry of some minerals, but there is no simple relationship to the theoretical stress model. The Fe-Mg silicates from the hinge zones often show lower values of iron, compared with the rest of the structure. A systematic variation between co-existing minerals indicates that chemical equilibrium has been attained. In many cases, the studied minerals from a folded layer are quite constant, which may be due either to small pressure gradients or to the fact that we have chosen minerals and elements which are not very sensitive to pressure. Though stress-induced diffusion may create some chemical variations, small fluctuations in partial pressures and local chemistry will very soon mask this pattern.

    • Measurements of the tensile strength of spherical cold-pressed aluminium powder, pressed to various densities up to the theoretical maximum, have shown that compaction is a two-stage process. At some high, intermediate pressure, interparticle sliding occurs in a way that does not itself increase densification but makes it easier for further deformation to occur. It is likely that the pressure at which this sliding takes place is dependent on the work-hardening rate of the powder as well as the powder size and morphology. In any case, it is shown to be important to the densification and strength reached by the compact. It is concluded that the strength of a green compact is dependent upon the interparticle metallic contacts made during compaction. However, the green strength is well below that of wrought aluminium, probably due to the presence of broken-up oxides, which act as stress-concentrators at the interparticle boundaries.

    • A mathematical model is employed for analysing the structure of the homogeneous ocean surface layer. The model is verified against laboratory measurements of the fully developed channel flow and the wind-induced channel flow. Turbulence models of different complexities are used and discussed. An extension of the k — ê turbulence model to rotating flows is derived and tested.The study indicates that a suitably chosen constant eddy viscosity is adequate for predicting the velocity and shear stress distributions in the Ekman layer. For transport of different chemical and biological species it is, however, necessary to know the detailed transport properties of the layer. Non-dimensional vertical distributions of different turbulence quantities, characterizing the Ekman layer, are therefore predicted and analysed. Rotational effects in the turbulence model are found to somewhat change the shear stress distribution in the deeper parts of the boundary layer.
