  • Transfer doping of diamond : Buckminsterfullerene on hydrogenated, hydroxylated, and oxygenated diamond surfaces
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials science. Materials in electronics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0957-4522 .- 1573-482X. ; 17:6, s. 459-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A monolayer of buckminsterfullerene (C60) has been modelled on hydrogenated, hydroxylated (-OH-terminated), and oxygenated diamond surfaces using ab-initio, density-functional-theory calculations, with a view to assessing the likelihood of transfer doping in each case. The C60 layer is predicted to spontaneously extract electrons from the hydrogenated surface, although on the hydroxylated surface there is an energy gap of ~1 eV preventing a similar electron transfer. With the fully oxygenated surface, there is a gap to electron transfer of ~4 eV, effectively prohibiting the transfer-doping effect. In each case, the molecule causes only very little disturbance to the substrate, although chemical reaction remains a significant possibility

  • Multifunctional Ginger Nanofiber Hydrogels with Tunable Absorption : The Potential for Advanced Wound Dressing Applications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : MDPI. - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 22:8, s. 3202-3215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, ginger residue from juice production was evaluated as a raw material resource for preparation of nanofiber hydrogels with multifunctional properties for advanced wound dressing applications. Alkali treatment was applied to adjust the chemical composition of ginger fibers followed by TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)-mediated oxidation prior to nanofiber isolation. The effect of alkali treatment on hydrogel properties assembled through vacuum filtration without addition of any chemical cross-linker was evaluated. An outstanding absorption ability of 6200% combined with excellent mechanical properties, tensile strength of 2.1 ± 0.2 MPa, elastic modulus of 15.3 ± 0.3 MPa, and elongation at break of 25.1%, was achieved without alkali treatment. Furthermore, the absorption capacity was tunable by applying alkali treatment at different concentrations and by adjusting the hydrogel grammage. Cytocompatibility evaluation of the hydrogels showed no significant effect on human fibroblast proliferation in vitro. Ginger essential oil was used to functionalize the hydrogels by providing antimicrobial activity, furthering their potential as a multifunctional wound dressing.

  • Advances in Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes: Focus on Low-Carbon Energy and Resource Recovery in Biorefinery Context
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Bioengineering. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). - 2306-5354. ; 11:3
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advancements in biological wastewater treatment with sustainable and circularity approaches have a wide scope of application. Biological wastewater treatment is widely used to remove/recover organic pollutants and nutrients from a diverse wastewater spectrum. However, conventional biological processes face challenges, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, and the generation of excess sludge. To overcome these limitations, integrated strategies that combine biological treatment with other physical, chemical, or biological methods have been developed and applied in recent years. This review emphasizes the recent advances in integrated strategies for biological wastewater treatment, focusing on their mechanisms, benefits, challenges, and prospects. The review also discusses the potential applications of integrated strategies for diverse wastewater treatment towards green energy and resource recovery, along with low-carbon fuel production. Biological treatment methods, viz., bioremediation, electro-coagulation, electro-flocculation, electro-Fenton, advanced oxidation, electro-oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, and photo-remediation, are summarized with respect to non-genetically modified metabolic reactions. Different conducting materials (CMs) play a significant role in mass/charge transfer metabolic processes and aid in enhancing fermentation rates. Carbon, metal, and nano-based CMs hybridization in different processes provide favorable conditions to the fermentative biocatalyst and trigger their activity towards overcoming the limitations of the conventional process. The emerging field of nanotechnology provides novel additional opportunities to surmount the constraints of conventional process for enhanced waste remediation and resource valorization. Holistically, integrated strategies are promising alternatives for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment while also contributing to the circular economy and environmental protection.

  • Analyzing degradation of ore pass walls in Kiirunavaara mine using scanning data
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Built Environment. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2297-3362. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ore passes play a vital role in underground mining operations by facilitating the gravity-driven movement of ore from production levels to lower levels. Failure of the ore pass has serious consequences, including possible production disruptions and substantial financial investments in reconstruction or rehabilitation. Failure mechanisms are often associated with rock mass quality, stress conditions, and wear of the ore pass walls. This study investigated the degradation of ore pass walls using scanning data at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara mine in Sweden. Geotechnical information obtained from various sources aided in further understanding the ore passes’ conditions. The study revealed variations in the ore pass growth rates, highlighting potential stability concerns and the correlation between throughput and pass growth. The findings underscore the need for continuous monitoring and regular inspection to manage wall degradation. The paper proposes potential rehabilitation measures to ensure the stability and safety of ore passes in mining operations.

  • A simple new radiative transfer model for simulating the effect of cirrus clouds in the microwave spectral region
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 75:5, s. 611-624
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The upwelling atmospheric radiation in the millimeter wave spectral range is influenced by the presence of cirrus clouds. A plane parallel radiative transfer model which can take into account the effect of multiple scattering by ice particles in the cirrus has been developed and is used to simulate the brightness temperatures as they would be measured by a satellite instrument. The model uses an iterative procedure to solve the radiative transfer equation. The formulation of the model is such that it can easily be adapted to treat the full specific intensity vector instead of just the scalar total intensity. A convergence test for the model is explained and two cirrus cloud scenarios are simulated. The results illustrate the linearity of microwave radiative transfer for not too strong cirrus clouds in this frequency region

  • A strong ice cloud event as seen by a microwave satellite sensor : simulations and observations
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 109:9, s. 1705-1718
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, brightness temperatures observed by channels of the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) instrument are compared to those simulated by a radiative transfer model, which can take into account the multiple scattering due to ice particles by using a discrete ordinate iterative solution method. The input fields, namely, the pressure, temperature, humidity, and cloud water content are taken from the short range forecast from the Met Office mesoscale model (UKMES). The comparison was made for a case study on the 25 January 2002 when a frontal system associated with significant cloud was present over the UK. It is demonstrated that liquid clouds have maximum impact on channel 16 of AMSU whereas ice clouds have maximum impact on channel 20. The main uncertainty for simulating microwave radiances is the assumptions about microphysical properties, such as size distribution, shape and orientation of the cloud particles, which are not known in the mesoscale model. The article examines the impact of these parameters on the cloud signal. The polarisation signal due to oriented ice particles at these frequencies is also discussed.

  • Modeling Grinding Processes-Mesh or Mesh-Free Methods, 2D or 3D Approach?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing. - : MDPI. - 2504-4494. ; 6:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objectives of this study are mainly two: (1) to validate whether a single grain scratch process can be modeled in two dimensions under the assumption of plane strain, and (2) to select the best discretization approach to model a single grain scratch process. This paper first focuses on the simulation of the orthogonal cutting process (aluminum alloy A2024 T351) using two mesh-based discretization approaches, the pure Lagrangian method (LAG) and the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method (ALE), and two particle-based approaches, the particle finite element method (PFEM) and smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH), for both positive and negative rake angles. Benchmarking of the orthogonal cutting models at a rake angle of gamma = 20 degrees is performed with the results of the process forces (cutting and passive forces) of a turning experiment from the literature. It is shown that all models are able to predict the cutting forces, but not the passive force. The orthogonal cutting model is further extended to simulate the cutting mechanism with negative rake tool geometries typically found in grinding and single grit scratching processes. The effects of the negative rake angles on the discretization approaches are studied. The calculated process forces are also compared to the measurements of the single grit scratch process performed at our laboratory. The 2D orthogonal cutting models significantly overestimate the process forces. One of the reasons why the orthogonal 2D cutting model is inadequate is that it cannot describe the complex mechanisms of material removal such as rubbing, plowing, and cutting. To account for these phenomena in LAG, ALE, and SPH discretization approaches, a 3D scratch model is developed. When comparing the process forces of the 3D model with the experimental measurements, all three discretization approaches show good agreement. However, it can be seen that the ALE model most closely matches the process forces with the experimental results. Finally, the ALE 3D scratch model was subjected to sensitivity analysis by changing the cutting speed, the depth of cut and the tool geometry. The results clearly show that the ALE method not only predicts the process forces and form the trends observed in the scratching experiments, but also predicts the scratch topography satisfactorily. Hence, we conclude that a 3D model is necessary to describe a scratch process and that the ALE method is the best discretization method.
