  • Topological Nodal Surface and Quadratic Dirac Semimetal States and van Hove Singularities in ScH3 and LuH3 Superconductors

    • The coexistence of non-trivial topology and superconductivity in a material may induce a novel physical phenomenon known as topological superconductivity. Topological superconductors have been the subject of intense research, yet there are severe limitations in their application due to a lack of suitable materials. Topological nodal surface semimetals with nearly flat nodal surfaces near the Fermi level can be promising materials to achieve topological superconductivity. Here, we use first-principles calculations to examine the topological electronic characteristics of two new superconductors, ScH3 and LuH3, at both ambient and high pressures. Our studies show that both ScH3 and LuH3 have van Hove singularities, which confirms their superconductivity. Interestingly, both materials host topological nodal surface states under the protection of time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries in the absence of spin–orbit coupling (SOC). These nodal surfaces are distinguished by a pair of unique drum-head-like surface states not previously observed in nodal surface semimetals. Moreover, the nodal surfaces transform into essential spin–orbit quadratic Dirac points when SOC is included. Our findings demonstrate that ScH3 and LuH3 are good candidates to investigate the exotic properties of both nodal surface semimetals (NSSMs) and quadratic Dirac semimetal states and also provide a platform to explore the coexistence of topology and superconductivity in NSSMs with promising applications in high-speed electronics and topological quantum computing.

  • V4C3 MXene: a Type-II Nodal Line Semimetal with Potential as High-Performing Anode Material for Mg-Ion Battery

    • We have used density functional theory simulations to explore the topological characteristics of a new MXene-like material, V4C3, and its oxide counterpart, assessing their potential as anode materials for Mg-ion batteries. Our research reveals that V4C3 monolayer is a topological type-II nodal line semimetal, protected by time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries. This type-II nodal line is marked by unique drumhead-like edge states that appear either inside or outside the loop circle, contingent upon the edge ending. Intriguingly, even with an increase in metallicity due to oxygen functionalization, the topological features of V4C3 remain intact. Consequently, the monolayer V4C3 has a topologically enhanced electrical conductivity that amplifies further upon oxygen functionalization. During the charging phase, a remarkable storage concentration led to a peak specific capacity of 894.73 mAh g−1 for V4C3, which only decreases to 789.33 mAh g−1 for V4C3O2. When compared to V2C, V4C3 displays a significantly lower specific capacity loss due to functionalization, demonstrating its superior electrochemical properties. Additionally, V4C3 and V4C3O2 exhibit moderate average open-circuit voltages (0.54 V for V4C3 and 0.58 V for V4C3O2) and energy barriers for intercalation migration (ranging between 0.29–0.63 eV), which are desirable for anode materials. Thus, our simulation results support V4C3 potential as an efficient anode material for Mg-ion batteries.

  • Shot genre classification using compressed audio-visual features

    • This paper proposes shot genre classification from MPEG compressed movies, as one of the high-level indexing methods for audio-visual contents. Through statistical analysis of low-level and mid-level audio-visual features on compressed domain, the proposed method can achieve subjectively accurate shot classification within the movies into predefined genre set, which can be applied to various content handling applications, such as summarization, navigation, editing, filtering, and so on. By feeding subjectively evaluated feature set for each shot genre into the Linear Machine Decision Tree classifier, each shot is classified at very low cost. The experimental results show that most of the shots in the movies can be classified into subjectively accurate genres, and also the dominant shot genre can correctly resolve each movie genre.

  • The geomorphology, color, and thermal properties of Ryugu: Implications for parent-body processes

    • Asteroids fall to Earth in the form of meteorites, but these provide little information about their origins. The Japanese mission Hayabusa2 is designed to collect samples directly from the surface of an asteroid and return them to Earth for laboratory analysis. Three papers in this issue describe the Hayabusa2 team's study of the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu, at which the spacecraft arrived in June 2018 (see the Perspective by Wurm). Watanabeet al.measured the asteroid's mass, shape, and density, showing that it is a “rubble pile” of loose rocks, formed into a spinning-top shape during a prior period of rapid spin. They also identified suitable landing sites for sample collection. Kitazatoet al.used near-infrared spectroscopy to find ubiquitous hydrated minerals on the surface and compared Ryugu with known types of carbonaceous meteorite. Sugitaet al.describe Ryugu's geological features and surface colors and combined results from all three papers to constrain the asteroid's formation process. Ryugu probably formed by reaccumulation of rubble ejected by impact from a larger asteroid. These results provide necessary context to understand the samples collected by Hayabusa2, which are expected to arrive on Earth in December 2020.Science, this issue p.268, p.272, p.eaaw0422; see also p.230

    • Water is an essential source of sustaining life and used in generating electricity, agriculture, industry, and the daily domestic uses. This study was prepared to determine the water consumption of Anbar Province in the west of Iraq according to agricultural, industrial, and domestic demand. In addition, the study is evaluating the expected future water consumption by demand sites within study area. The results showed the domestic water demand will increases by 32% from 267.30 million m3 /year in 2021 to 352.70 million m3 per year in 2035, with a deficit of 24.5% in the year 2035. Furthermore, the study had appeared the agricultural demand was 1404.38 million m3 /year according to the limited cultivated area, which equals 42.93% from the total available area of 221,250 hectares. The agricultural demand increases to 2611 million m3 /year when uses all available area, and this cause occurs deficit in water demand reach to 1591 and 1715 million m3 /year in the years 2030 and 2035 respectively. In contrast, the study referred to necessary apply other irrigation methods as drip and sprinkler irrigation, which has high irrigation efficiency. In addition, using lined channels and pipes to transport water to reduce losses by leaching and evaporation. © 2021 WITPress. All rights reserved.

    • Sediment transport in rivers is an important and complex process. It is very important to know the nature and quantities of sediments transported in course of rivers to achieve prudent water management. Due to the presence of most of the important projects on or near the banks of the river in the study area, so there is always a fear that these projects will be affected by the processes of erosion, transport, and sedimentation among the decision makers. Therefore, there is a need to develop our knowledge of the suitable equations that can be applied with acceptable accuracy to obtain satisfactory results for monitoring the processes of erosion, sedimentation, and transport that occur in River path to monitor and anticipate the changes taking place in the areas of the riverbanks. This study was carried out to check the reliability of different sediment transport formulas using data collected from the Euphrates River at the thermal power station in Al Anbar province, Iraq. The study also aimed to select the best formula for this site. Hydrological data have been collected. These were used for computing the total sediment load in the river at a specified cross-section using common sediment transport formulas ascribed to Ackers-White, Bagnold, Yang, Colby, Shen and Hung, and Engelund-Hansen. The performance of these formulas was assessed based on the accuracy of the predictions of the observed sediment load within a limited discrepancy ratio. The evaluations showed that the Engelund-Hansen formula represented the best formula for this river reach.
