    • Zeolite beta was crystallized from clear homogeneous solutions within the pores of anion exchange resin beads. The organic macrotemplate was then removed by combustion leaving stable macrospheres of zeolite beta. The zeolite beta crystallization within the resin beads was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and nitrogen adsorption measurements. Crystallization within the macrotemplates was compared with the crystallization from bulk solution. The influence of the resin beads on the crystallization process was investigated by increasing the amount of ion exchanger present during synthesis and also by preparing bulk samples in the absence of macrotemplates.

    • The preparation of zeolite macrostructures in the form of bilayered hollow tubes and microspheres is presented. The bilayered hollow ZSM-5/silicalite-1 tubes were prepared using carbon fibers as a substrate. The surface of the fibers was modified and colloidal silicalite-1 seed crystals adsorbed. The fibers were then treated with a synthesis mixture yielding ZSM-5. After separation of the fiber/zeolite composites a second treatment resulting in the crystallization of silicalite-1 was performed. Finally, the carbon fibers were removed by calcination leaving hollow tubes. Silicalite-1 micropsheres were prepared using macroporous anion exchange resins as shape directing macro-templates. Resin beads were hydrothermally treated with a synthesis solution yielding silicalite-1 resulting in the crystallization of silicalite-1 in the pores of the resin. The resin was then removed by calcination leaving self-bonded silicalite-1 micropsheres identical in shape and size to the original resin beads. The zeolite macrostructures were extensively characterized using SEM, XRD, EDS-analysis, Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption and microhardness measurements.

  • A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on Shearing Mechanisms in Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Line Contacts

    • A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the thermal elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) line contact problem has been developed for the purpose of exploring the physical processes that occur inside a thin EHL film subjected to shearing motion. The Navier–Stokes equations are solved by using the finite volume method (FVM) in a commercial CFD software, ANSYS Fluent. A set of user-defined functions (UDF) are used for computing viscosity, density, heat source, temperature of moving surfaces and elastic deformation of the top roller according to well-established equations commonly used in the EHL theory. The cavitation problem is solved by taking into account multiphase mixture flow. The model combinations of Houpert and Ree–Eyring and of Tait and Carreau were used for modeling the non-Newtonian behavior of Squalane and the results were compared. Both rheological models suggest the existence of shear-band and plug-flow at high fluid pressure. Due to the differences in viscosity at GPa-level pressure, the chosen model has substantial influence on the computed shear stress and temperature distributions in the high-pressure region. This shows the importance of using correct rheology information in the whole range of pressure, temperature, and shear strain rate.

    • With the introduction of clustered messaging brokers and the fault-tolerant Mobile Connector, we can guarantee the exactly-once consumption of messages by agents. The context-aware messaging allowed us to decrease the messaging overhead which has to be present in any fault-tolerant solution. This paper proposes a complete fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems (EFTL) that does not restrict agent autonomy and mobility in any way. An application can choose if it wants EFTL support and that decision is based on support costs. A persistent publish/subscribe messaging model allows the creation of an external platform-independent fault-tolerant layer. In order to support the multi-agent platforms of different vendors, a large part of the application logic is moved from those platforms to an application server. We present the EFTL system architecture, the algorithm of exactly-once message consumption and the system's performance analysis

    • A persistent publish/subscribe messaging model allows the creation of an application-independent fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems. We propose a layer which is capable of supporting heterogenous agent platforms from different vendors. This layer is a three-tier application, which is accessible from multi-agent systems via web-services or a persistent publish/subscribe messaging system. We describe the design of the fault-tolerant layer, its messaging system, as well as the algorithm of fault-recovery procedure in the case of agent and/or host death. We also present performance analysis of the proposed solution, to justify its use in systems which demand different levels of reliability.

    • In this paper we propose a complete platform-independent fault-tolerant layer for multi-agent systems, which is able to support heterogeneous agent platforms from different vendors. Our solution incorporates the usage of the J2EE architecture, Web-services and the persistent publish/subscribe messaging model to allow negotiable support and guarantee the exactly-once consumption of messages. It greatly improves the reliability of multi-agent systems and produces insignificant runtime overheads. We present the layer's conceptual architecture and conclude this paper with a performance analysis of the solution.

  • Thermal Effects in Slender EHL Contacts

    • This study deals with experimental and numerical analysis of the thermal effects of slender elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contacts under high sliding. Thereby, the entrainment direction is along the major axis of the contact ellipse. Film thickness measurements were carried out on an optical EHL tribometer with a glass disk and steel roller. Numerical EHL solutions were obtained with consideration for non-Newtonian rheology and thermal effects. The results show that thermal effects can result in a strong viscosity wedge diverting oil flow to the contact sides. For high positive sliding, in which the glass disk moves faster, the influence of entrainment speed on minimum film thickness is almost negligible, while the film thickness shows a continuous decrease in gap length direction.
