  • Unbiased Adaptive LASSO parameter estimation for diffusion processes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 18th IFAC Symposium on System Identification SYSID 2018. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8963. ; 51:15, s. 257-262
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adaptive Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (aLASSO) method is an algorithm for simultaneous model selection and parameter estimation with oracle properties. In this work we derive an adaptive LASSO type estimator for diffusion driven stochastic differential equation under weak conditions, specifically that the algorithm does not rely on high frequency properties. All conditional moments needed in our quasi likelihood function are computed from the Kolmogorov Backward equation. This means that a single equation is solved numerically, regardless of the number of observations. The LASSO problem is solved using the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) method. Our simulations show that the resulting algorithm is able to find the correct model with high probability while obtaining unbiased parameter estimates when evaluated on two qualitatively different data sets.

  • “I am God and Not Human” (Hos 11,9) : Can Divine Compassion Overcome our Anthropomorphisms?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of the Old Testament. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0901-8328 .- 1502-7244. ; 29:1, s. 135-151

    • Hos 11,8-9 is characterized by its strong anthropomorphic language and by its (illusory?) disassociation from it. A reference to Israel’s God as “not human” motivates the unexpected change of mind and compassion for God’s Israel. This article is based on a tradition-historical oriented typological reading of the expression “I am God and not human.” It suggests a new interpretation of this expression which throws a new light on the notoriously difficult conclusion of the passage: “I will not enter the city.” The exegetical discussion normally focuses on what is going on in YHWH’s mind and heart, but also on the alleged struggle between anger and love. The author’s interpretation points to the risk of transforming the pain of God into an internal transaction, with which it is hard to sympathize and to feel involved. • Jag är Gud och inte människa (Hos 11:9) : Kan Guds medlidande besegra våra antropomorfa gudsbilder?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Teologisk tidsskrift. - 1893-0263. ; 3:2, s. 136-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyses the Bible’s most famous and debated texts which express divine repentance. Hos 11:8–9 is characterized by its strong anthropomorphic language and by its (illusory?) disassociation from it. A reference to Israel’s God as ‘not human’ motivates the unexpected change of mind and compassion for God’s Israel. The exegetical discussion habitually focuses on what is going on in YHWH’s mind and heart, but also on the alleged struggle between anger and love. This article is based on a tradition-historical oriented typological reading of the expression ‘I am God and not human’. It suggests a new interpretation of this expression which throws a new light on the notorious difficult conclusion of the passage: ‘I will not enter the city’. The author also problematizes the influence from the Lutheran tradition’s understanding of ‘God against God’ on the exegetical discussion, i.e., the passage is supposed to mirror an inner struggle within the Deity ‘for our sake’. This understanding runs the risk of transforming the pain of God to an internal transaction which is hard to sympathize with and to feel involved with.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • A flexible spatio-temporal model for air pollution with spatial and spatio-temporal covariates
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Environmental and Ecological Statistics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1352-8505 .- 1573-3009. ; 21:3, s. 411-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of models that provide accurate spatio-temporal predictions of ambient air pollution at small spatial scales is of great importance for the assessment of potential health effects of air pollution. Here we present a spatio-temporal framework that predicts ambient air pollution by combining data from several different monitoring networks and deterministic air pollution model(s) with geographic information system covariates. The model presented in this paper has been implemented in an R package, SpatioTemporal, available on CRAN. The model is used by the EPA funded Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air) to produce estimates of ambient air pollution; MESA Air uses the estimates to investigate the relationship between chronic exposure to air pollution and cardiovascular disease. In this paper we use the model to predict long-term average concentrations of in the Los Angeles area during a 10 year period. Predictions are based on measurements from the EPA Air Quality System, MESA Air specific monitoring, and output from a source dispersion model for traffic related air pollution (Caline3QHCR). Accuracy in predicting long-term average concentrations is evaluated using an elaborate cross-validation setup that accounts for a sparse spatio-temporal sampling pattern in the data, and adjusts for temporal effects. The predictive ability of the model is good with cross-validated of approximately at subject sites. Replacing four geographic covariate indicators of traffic density with the Caline3QHCR dispersion model output resulted in very similar prediction accuracy from a more parsimonious and more interpretable model. Adding traffic-related geographic covariates to the model that included Caline3QHCR did not further improve the prediction accuracy.

  • Background and Foreground Modeling Using an Online EM Algorithm
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Workshop on Visual Surveillance. ; VS2006, s. 9-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel approach to background/foreground segmentation using an online EM algorithm is presented. The method models each layer as a Gaussian mixture, with local, per pixel, parameters for the background layer and global parameters for the foreground layer, utilising information from the entire scene when estimating the foreground. Additionally, the online EM algorithm uses a progressive learning rate where the relative update speed of each Gaussian component depends on how often the component has been observed. It is shown that the progressive learning rate follows naturally from introduction of a forgetting factor in the log-likelihood. To reduce the number of mixture components similar foreground components are merged using a method based on the Kullback-Leibler distance. A bias is introduced in the variance estimates to avoid the known problem of singularities in the log-likelihood of Gaussian mixtures when the variance tends to zero. To allow a decoupling of the learning rate of the Gaussian components and the speed at which stationary objects are incorporated into the background a CUSUM detector is used instead of the prevailing method that uses the ratio of prior probability to standard deviation. The algorithm is scale invariant and its properties on gray-scale and RGB videos, as well as on output from an edge detector, is compared to that of another algorithm. Especially for the edge detector video performance increases dramatically.

  • From arctic lemmings to adaptive dynamics: Charles Elton's legacy in population ecology
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Biological Reviews. - 1469-185X. ; 76:1, s. 129-158
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We shall examine the impact of Charles S. Eltons 1924 article on periodic fluctuations in animal populations on the development of modern population ecology. We argue that his impact has been substantial and that during the past 75 years of research on multi-annual periodic fluctuations in numbers of voles, lemmings, hares, lynx and game animals he has contributed much to the contemporary understanding of the causes and consequences of population regulation. Elton was convinced that the cause of the regular fluctuations was climatic variation. To support this conclusion, he examined long-term population data then available. Despite his firm belief in a climatic cause of the self-repeating periodic dynamics which many species display, Elton was insightful and far-sighted enough to outline many of the other hypotheses since put forward as an explanation for the enigmatic long-term dynamics of some animal populations. An interesting, but largely neglected aspect in Eltons paper is that it ends with speculation regarding the evolutionary consequences of periodic population fluctuations. The modern understanding of these issues will also be scrutinised here. In population ecology, Eltons 1924 paper has spawned a whole industry of research on populations displaying multi-annual periodicity. Despite the efforts of numerous research teams and individuals focusing on the origins of multi-annual population cycles, and despite the early availability of different explanatory hypotheses, we are still lacking rigorous tests of some of these hypotheses and, consequently, a consensus of the causes of periodic fluctuations in animal populations. Although Elton would have been happy to see so much effort spent on cyclic populations, we also argue that it is unfortunate if this focus on a special case of population dynamics should distract our attention from more general problems in population and community dynamics.
