  • Identifying the role of business accelerators in the developing business ecosystem : the life science sector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Innovation Management. - : EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1460-1060 .- 1758-7115. ; 24:4, s. 1459-1479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Business accelerators have recently received increasing attention as important cogs in business ecosystem development. However, their exact role in the ecosystem is not yet well known, especially outside the IT sector. The purpose of this study is, therefore, twofold: to determine the position of life science accelerators in the business ecosystem and the attributes of support for companies and to identify key features of the life science accelerators that contribute to the change in business ecosystems. Design/methodology/approach The authors offer an exploratory case study of five life science business accelerators and analyze the main factors affecting the companies and the whole business ecosystem. The authors build upon the scarce literature on business accelerators and consider a new type of accelerator that specializes in life science projects and study its role in the transformation and evolution of the life science industry. Findings The authors have defined the role and key parameters of life science accelerators that influence the existing business ecosystems: (1) cooperation with other regions and countries, (2) development of entrepreneurial skills among participants of the business accelerators program and (3) a project on demand-based approach. Originality/value The key parameters of the life science accelerators allow to concentrate these efforts on the activities that are most demanded by the market. Business accelerators can increase the created value for other program participants.

  • Innovations in veterinary markets : opinion leaders' social capital
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 36:13, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This study aims to identify how the personal social capital of opinion leaders contributes to the market adoption of start-up innovations. Design/methodology/approach A design-oriented case study is undertaken with a start-up company focusing on the development and commercialization of innovations in the veterinary market. Based on a literature review, the authors examine the social capital in value creation and the role of opinion leaders and use qualitative methodology and semi-structured in-depth interviews to collect data. Findings The adoption of innovations could start with opinion leaders that will later share their experience with other members of the professional community. In turn, social capital allows for creating a collaboration between start-ups and leaders based on a number of specific parameters. Originality/value This paper contributes to marketing literature by providing new insights regarding collaboration between start-ups and opinion leaders. The collaboration between opinion leaders and start-ups could be implemented not only in the veterinary industry but also in other industries with minor adaptations. Authors demonstrate how the social capital of external stakeholders may be used as a resource of the company for business development. The main contribution of this study is to demonstrate that social capital could be used as a parameter for the adoption of innovations. The key parameters that allow creating cooperation between start-up and opinion leader have been identified.

  • Medical technology innovation ecosystems : factors influencing the formation of new companies
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on how the medical technology (MedTech) innovationecosystems contribute to the formation of start-ups. An innovation ecosysteminvolves collaboration and the exchange of resources in order to stimulate its owndevelopment and change over time. The MedTech innovation ecosystem ischaracterized by a large number of innovations, which are more concentrated inthe pharmaceutical industry, biotech, medical devices, and healthcare informationtechnology fields. Existing ecosystem studies offer a fairly diverse understandingof the formation goals, development parameters, and other parameters, which areoften inaccessible to an external observer. Understanding the internal processestypical of successful MedTech innovative ecosystems contributes to the adaptationof best practices for developing innovative ecosystems, reducing the financial, time, and human resources spent, and developing the economy. As a result of theactivity of innovative MedTech companies, customers receive new equipment, methods of treatment, and rehabilitation of patients, reducing the costs andworkload for medical personnel. The MedTech innovation ecosystem is explored in four Papers and anextended summary in this thesis. Since the study aimed to increase knowledgeabout how MedTech innovation ecosystems contribute to an increase in thenumber of start-ups, qualitative research strategy and content and within, crosscase, and narrative methods of analyzing the collected information were chosen. The studied phenomena were investigated from the point of view of subjectivity, that is, the interpretation of the past events of the participants and their personalview of the actions taken. The results of the study were the identification of two key parameters thatcontribute to the formation and successful development of MedTech innovativestart-ups, namely the provision of public support and the possibility of cooperation.Public and private support includes financial resources at various stages ofcompany development, including support for basic and applied research, provisionof grants at the stage of company formation for marketing research, a grants search, company registration, other loans, and grants for company formation. Nonfinancial types of support include providing access to the infrastructure of theinnovation ecosystem, which includes laboratories, specialized equipment, trainingcourses, entrepreneur support programs, etc. Collaboration involves leveraging theinternal connections of the innovation ecosystem and providing access to otherinnovation ecosystems to work on projects that cross the interests of several areas,as well as MedTech innovation ecosystems in other countries. This thesis brings more clarity to the process of formation and developmentof the MedTech innovation ecosystem and proposes a model of a successfulecosystem that could be claimed by policymakers who make decisions about thedevelopment of the industry. Moreover, the thesis offers several successful casesthat consider the non-obvious benefits that start-ups from innovativeecosystems can receive and use as an additional benefit for their development.KEYWORDS: innovation ecosystem, medical technologies, start-ups, innovation

  • Navigating uncharted waters : Designing business models for virtual and augmented reality companies in the medical industry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies are at the heart of industry transformation. Virtual and augmented reality companies provide fundamentally new ways of communication, treatment, education, and specialist training within the medical industry. However, business models for new ventures that target the medical industry have received scant attention within academic research. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze how virtual and augmented reality firms create value for their customers in the medical industry. In all, we have studied eight companies that offer different types of solutions for their target segments. The results of the analysis are four design elements consisting of twelve positions and three design themes that define the similarities and differences between the business models for the companies. We contribute to existing research within the field by analyzing business models of the investigated companies using a design approach, classifying the virtual and augmented reality companies, and analyzing the role of new technology in the development of the medical industry.

  • Struggling with conservatism : entrepreneurships' challenges in business model design
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International journal of value chain management. - : INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD. - 1741-5357 .- 1741-5365. ; 12:1, s. 45-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the conservative business ecosystem and to identify opportunities for new companies to create value. Authors used a design-oriented case study with a start-up concentrating on the commercialisation of the university research. The authors consider a novel business model used by the start-up company. By analysing the model, methods are proposed for accelerating the company and the business ecosystem. The results indicate that cooperation between the product suppliers and opinion leaders plays a key role in supporting the biomedical business ecosystem. The probability of success for a new product depends on the interest of the professional community. The results add to the existing knowledge on business models for start-up companies to succeed without business expertise and extensive business network. The transformation of customers to partners stimulates the emergence of a new business model that takes into account the new role of a 'customer-partner'.

  • Sustainable Cruise Tourism : Systematic Literature Review and Future Research Areas
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 15:10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cruise shipping industry has existed for centuries. However, sustainability is a relatively new trend that could make a big difference and someday impact the industry. A growing body of research on sustainable cruise tourism includes studying changes among industry stakeholders, internal and external processes, and more. However, until now, there have been no comprehensive and systematic reviews of the academic literature on this topic and proposals for future research areas. The sample for our research consists of 56 articles structured into the following themes and subthemes: (1) corporate social responsibility (public interaction and emissions management); (2) territory management (collaboration with stakeholders and infrastructure development); (3) training in sustainable behavior (passengers, ship personnel, and other stakeholders). These themes fully explore the various use cases for sustainable cruises, forming a conceptual framework for understanding trends for the industry's sustainable development. We direct the attention of other researchers to the following areas for further research: GHG emissions of cruising; biodiversity impacts; quantitative understanding of the target audience and their participation in sustainability financing; in-depth understanding of the reasons for cooperation between stakeholders; identifying the true motivation for participation in sustainable development; the long-term trends; and how the shipping industry is adapting to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Technology entrepreneurship in healthcare : Challenges and opportunities for value creation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation and Knowledge. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2530-7614 .- 2444-569X. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The healthcare industry is nowadays increasingly forced to adapt to new fast-paced changes, despite its conservatism. Indeed, the number of new technology entrepreneurs and technology value is increasing. In this study, we use modern literature and illustrative cases to identify patterns of technological value creation in the healthcare industry with the purpose to form an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for technology entrepreneurs. Hence, we propose a new challenges-opportunities framework for understanding technology entrepreneurship (i.e., technology innovation, technology proactivity, and technology risk-taking) as a foundation for value creation concerning the needs of patients, medical personnel and hospitals, and the whole industry. We also end the article by outlining practical implications at the micro-level (i.e., patient advocacy and technology-enabled engagement strategies), meso-level (i.e., digital health solutions and motivation for collaboration), and macro-level (i.e., trust building and infrastructure).
