  • Design of a tetra-band MIM plasmonic absorber based on triangular arrays in an ultra-compact MIM waveguide
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optical and quantum electronics. - : Springer Nature. - 0306-8919 .- 1572-817X. ; 55:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents design and numerical investigations of an ultra-compact, and highly-efficient plasmonic absorber based on metal-insulator-metal waveguides. The proposed device offers multiple narrow-band absorption at visible and near-infrared wavelengths with peak absorbance between 81 and 100%. The finite element method has been used to simulate the proposed structure. The simulation results show that the resonance wavelengths can be easily modulated by tuning the coupling distances between the input and output ports and the triangular resonators. To find the optimized size of the proposed structure, maximize its efficiency, and attain narrow-band resonances, a parameterized genetic algorithm has been used. Taking into account the obtained notable specifications of the proposed structure, it can contribute to the development of miniaturized and efficient optical components for photonic integrated circuits.

  • Highly-Miniaturized Nano-Plasmonic Filters Based on Stepped Impedance Resonators with Tunable Cut-Off Wavelengths
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Plasmonics. - : Springer Nature. - 1557-1955 .- 1557-1963. ; 18:4, s. 1607-1618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the design and numerical investigation of tunable, ultra-compact, and highly-efficient plasmonic filters based on stepped impedance resonators (SIRs). The proposed devices are realized in metal–insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide systems and exhibit more degrees of freedom and high flexibility to design resonator-based devices, thanks to the SIRs. The principle of conventional SIRs is discussed in terms of equivalent circuit model and characteristic impedance. Among the three proposed plasmonic filters, one of them acts as a short-wavelength, while the other two nanostructures work as long-wavelength cut-off filters at near-infrared region (NIR) and telecom wavelengths. Simulation results are carried out by a finite element method (FEM)-based solver and indicate that the cut-off wavelengths of the proposed resonators found to be at 1187 nm, 1265 nm, and 999 nm, respectively, can be easily tuned by modulating their structural parameters. In addition to the mentioned remarkable properties of the designed structures including the size which are found to be 500 nm × 310 nm, 350 nm × 285 nm, and 210 nm × 195 nm, respectively, the simple structures of the proposed topologies facilitate their fabrication process. Therefore, the suggested devices can contribute to the development of miniaturized, tunable, and efficient optical components for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) applications and in optical wireless communication systems.

  • Distributions over Expected Utilities in Decision Analysis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: ISIPTA 2007 - Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications. - 9788086742205 ; , s. 175-182
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is often recognised that in real-life decision situations, classical utility theory puts too strong requirements on the decision-maker. Various interval approaches for decision making have therefore been developed and these have been reasonably successful. However, a problem that sometimes appears in real-life situations is that the result of an evaluation still has an uncertainty about which alternative is to prefer. This is due to expected utility overlaps rendering discrimination more difficult. In this article we discuss how adding second-order information may increase a decision-makers understanding of a decision situation when handling aggregations of imprecise representations, as is the case in decision trees or influence diagrams.

  • Second order effects in interval valued decision graph models
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Eighteenth International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference, FLAIRS 2005 - Recent Advances in Artifical Intelligence. - : AAAI Press. - 1577352343 ; , s. 728-733
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Second-order calculations may significantly increase a decision maker's understanding of a decision situation when handling aggregations of imprecise representations, as is the case in decision trees or influence diagrams, while the use of only first-order results gives an incomplete picture. The results apply also to approaches which do not explicitly deal with second-order distributions, instead using only first-order concepts such as upper and lower bounds.

  • Second-order risk constraints
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference, FLAIRS-21. - Menlo Park : AAAI Press. - 9781577353652 ; , s. 637-642
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses how numerically imprecise information can be modelled and how a risk evaluation process can be elaborated by integrating procedures for numerically imprecise probabilities and utilities. More recently, representations and methods for stating and analysing probabilities and values (utilities) with belief distributions over them (second order representations) have been suggested. In this paper, we are discussing some shortcomings in the use of the principle of maximising the expected utility and of utility theory in general, and offer remedies by the introduction of supplementary decision rules based on a concept of risk constraints taking advantage of second-order distributions.

  • Operationalising and incorporating ethical considerations into a tool for multi-criteria decision making
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Multicriteria Decision Making. - : InderScience Publishers. - 2040-106X .- 2040-1078. ; 6:4, s. 290-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, an existing method for ethical analysis was extended by adding aspects of human rights and global distributional issues as framed by the United Nations (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A procedure for incorporating these issues together with environmental, safety and cost considerations into a decision making framework using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was devised. This includes a scoring system to convert qualitative ethical issues into semi-quantitative issues. The refined framework tool was tested in an illustrative case on the destruction of ammunition. The results showed that the extended framework for ethical analysis added value, for example as a way of highlighting ethical considerations in decision making. Use of the DecideIT software with its integrated MCDA improved the analysis by allowing for uncertain and imprecise values and estimations. The illustrative case results indicated that a combined alternative including recycling of metals and energetic materials had clear advantages over open detonation.

  • Life cycle assessment of a retail store aquaponic system in a cold-weather region
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Sustainability. - Stockholm : Frontiers Media SA. - 2673-4524. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alternative food production technologies are being developed to meet the global increase in population and demand for a more sustainable food supply. Aquaponics, a combined method of vegetable and fish production, is an emerging technology that is widely regarded as sustainable. Yet, there has been limited research on its environmental performance, especially at a commercial scale. In this study, life cycle analysis (LCA) was used to assess the environmental impacts of food produced by an urban commercial aquaponic system located next to a retail store in a cold-weather region (Östersund, Sweden). The functional unit (FU) used is 1 kg of fresh produce, which includes cucumber (Cucumis sativus), tomatoes (Solanum Lycopersicum), and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The system boundary is set from cradle to farm or retailer's gate due to the proximity of the aquaponic system to the retail store. Results were reported employing eight environmental impact categories, including global warming potential (GWP), marine eutrophication (MEU), and cumulative energy demand (CED). According to contribution analysis, the main hotspots of the system are electricity, CO2 enrichment, and heating. Potential areas to mitigate the impact of these parameters were highlighted in this study, including the establishment of symbiotic links to utilize urban waste and by-products. The impact per vegetable or fish produced was partitioned using energy and economic allocation and compared to other common cultivation methods. The yearly harvest from the aquaponic system was also compared to importing these food items from other European countries which showed lower annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the aquaponic system.

  • Capillary density : An important parameter in nailfold capillaroscopy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Microvascular Research. - Netherland : Elsevier. - 0026-2862 .- 1095-9319. ; 109, s. 7-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nailfold capillaroscopy is one of the various noninvasive bioengineering methods used to investigate skin microcirculation. It is an effective examination for assessing microvascular changes in the peripheral circulation; hence it has a significant role for the diagnosis of Systemic sclerosis with the classic changes of giant capillaries as well as the decline in capillary density with capillary dropout. The decline in capillary density is one of microangiopathic features existing in connective tissue disease. It is detectable with nailfold capillaroscopy. This parameter is assessed by applying quantitative measurement. In this article, we reviewed a common method for calculating the capillary density and the relation between the number of capillaries as well as the existence of digital ulcers, pulmonary arterial hypertension, autoantibodies, scleroderma patterns and different scoring system.
