  • Multivariate linear normal models with special references to the growth curve model
  • 1985
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Growth Curve Model (GMAN0VA) introduced by Potthoff & Roy (1964) and two extensions are considered. The first extension treats a Growth Curve Model with concomitant variables whereas the second is applicable when different growth curves or when linear restrictions on the parameter space, describing the mean structure in the Growth Curve Model, exist. Likelihood equations for the Growth Curve Model as well as for the proposed extensions are solved and it is established that the solutions are maximum likelihood estimators. For each solution necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness are given. When the estimators or linear functions of these are unique, moments are derived. Among others, the first five moments of the estimator describing the mean structure in the Growth Curve Model are given as well as the first and second moments for the estimator of the dispersion matrix. Furthermore, asymptotic equivalent expressions for the maximum likelihood estimators which are normally distributed are presented. In order to obtain the above mentioned results quite a lot of matrix algebra and moment relations are needed. Lemmas which include original work on vector spaces, linear equations, Kronecker products, the commutation matrix, matrix derivatives, moments for matrix normally distributed variables, moments of quadratic forms and moments for the inverted Wishart distribution are given.

  • Making transformation happen : Institutional entrepreneurship and boundary management in the Coral Triangle
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis sets out to investigate the dynamics of transformative change in social-ecological systems. That is, how large-scale sustainability transitions can be initiated and purposefully navigated. It does so by examining the emergence of the Coral Triangle Initiative–a multi-lateral partnership between six countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific aimed to transform governance and management of costal and marine resources in the region. The first study draws on theories on institutional entrepreneurship, social-ecological systems, and regime formation to analyze what factors and strategies enable transformative change. The study shows how institutional entrepreneurs are leveraging resources and garnering support from the highest political level across the region. It also shows how institutional entrepreneurs navigate the broader opportunity context by preparing the system for change and scaling up new ideas. The second study apply boundary management theory to investigate what challenges are associated with the endeavor to manage a large-scale sustainability initiative in a regionally inter-connected ecosystem like the Coral Triangle–a system where contextual complexity creates constraints on collaboration and policy making. In particular, the study examines how the interplay between different stakeholders affects the legitimacy, salience, and credibility of transformative change. The study shows that resources asymmetries, difficulties at linking scales, and lack of transparency risk to undermine each of the three, especially since the CTI has not adequately allowed for negotiation around trade-offs between social and ecological goals.

  • New speakers in a multilingual Sweden : Policy in practice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 11th ISB.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sweden is a multilingual country: in 2014, 23.8% of students in compulsory schools spoke languages in addition to Swedish. Over 160,000 individuals applied for asylum in Sweden in 2015 many of them children aged 7-16 with the right to education during the asylum-seeking process (Swedish Migration Agency, 2016). While Sweden has educational policies and programs in place to meet the needs of multilingual students, the exceptional numbers of recent arrivals has been a challenge to the educational system. In view of the changing linguistic landscape in educational settings, the aim of this colloquium is to critically analyze how new speakers in a range of educational contexts in Sweden are constructed in policy and practice. To frame the four studies, the colloquium begins with a presentation of language and education in the Swedish context. Following this, the first paper examines compulsory school teacher education, specifically researching how teachers are prepared to meet increasingly diverse student populations. The study considers the perspectives of teacher educators and pre-service teachers in order to understand the ideological and implementational spaces afforded multilingualism in teacher training policies. The second paper explores tensions between conceptualizations and regulations framing languages as "mother tongues" and approaches to teaching Kurdish through the subject of mother tongue instruction to children in lower secondary school. The findings contribute to understandings of the new and traditional speaker dichotomy—a relevant issue in research on heritage or multilingual language education in all contexts. The third paper focuses on other new speakers in a Swedish primary school, namely language minority students enrolled in an English-Swedish bilingual program. As new speakers of both languages of instruction, these students may encounter particular challenges with academic content learning. However, results reveal how students resist language separation policies and legitimize their own language practices in the classroom. Finally, the fourth paper moves the focus to literacy education for adult immigrants. The study utilizes a critical sociocultural perspective on literacy and language learning to investigate how the “illiterate learner” is constructed in Swedish adult education policy and how the conceptualization is subsequently related to understandings of these new speakers as the Other. With our presentations ranging from primary school to adult education, we expand the view of the new speaker, by exploring categorizations and conceptualizations of new speakers and their language practices in Sweden. To conclude, the discussant will consider the themes presented by the four papers, focusing on the ways these empirical studies shed light on the range of issues surrounding new speakers in the Swedish context. This conceptual discussion will be briefly compared to similar challenges and possibilities in other contexts before we open the floor for a dialogue amongst the participating audience and the presenting speakers.

  • The advantages of being small : Glycosyltransferases in many dimensions and glycolipid synthesis in Mycoplasma Pneumoniae
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The synthesis and breakdown of sugars is one of the most important functions in Nature. Consequently, sugar structures are used both as energy storage and as building blocks to stabilise and protect the cell. The formation of these structures is performed by glycosyltransferases (GT), an enzyme group structurally conserved within all kingdoms. Until now, only two different folds have been discovered by crystallisation of GTs, i.e. GT-A and GT-B. A third fold family has however been proposed by fold predictions. In this thesis, a multivariate data analysis was successfully used in classifying and predicting both fold and reaction mechanism (inverting or retaining) of GTs. This method was also used to obtain information about the separating parameters for the reaction mechanism classification. This information could be traced back to the amino acid sequence. The method could as well be used to analyse and identify the properties of membrane binding regions of GTs, and subsequently distinguish soluble from membrane-associated enzymes. Most functionally characterised enzymes only use one substrate, synthesising one product. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a common human pathogen with a small genome has only three proposed GTs. The bacterium was, however expected to have a greater number of GTs, due to its ability to make both glycolipids and capsule. Here we have determined the function of one of these enzymes, MPN483 and discovered its ability to both use different acceptors, and make elongated glycolipids with up to three galactose residues, with both DAG and ceramide as the base. Many of the synthesised glycolipids were also found to be immunogenic, hence showing their biological importance. The properties of lipids are known to be important for the function of a biological membrane. We have here shown that not only the charge but also the shape of the lipids are important for several protein mediated membrane processes in Echerichia coli, such as the function of the LacY.
