  • The Making of Resistance : Brazil’s Landless Movement and Narrative Enactment
  • 2017
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book advances a theoretical approach that recognizes social movements as contingent enterprises. It explores the endurance of social movements over time, by developing analytical tools to study how social movement heterogeneities are simultaneously acknowledged and articulated together, through collective narration and practices. With a unique empirical analysis of one particular narrative – the story of Brazil’s Landless Movement – this book portrays a narrative revisited and revised by movement participants, a story revived through enactment. This book addresses the increasing academic audience seeking to study, and theorize, the multi-colored phenomena of resistance and social movements.

  • The Political Economy of Meat
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1187-7863 .- 1573-322X. ; 32:1, s. 95-104
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses variegated scholarly approaches to what is here typified as a political economy of meat. Identified as a multifaceted, transdisciplinary and most dynamic field of research, inquiries into the political economy of meat imbricate key issues of social and economic development, across the human–animal divide. While some scholars interpret livestock production as “a pathway from poverty”, others observe deepened marginalization and exploitation. The argument raised in this paper is that concise engagement with multiple critical perspectives may facilitate further explorations into the social dynamics that characterize the political economy of meat.

  • Toward Anarchy : A Historical Sketch of the Anarchism-Democracy Divide
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Theory in Action. - : Theory in Action. - 1937-0229 .- 1937-0237. ; 13:1, s. 80-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article traces divergent approaches to democracy in the history of anarchist thought. It outlines an anarchist critique of democracy, a defiant composition arrayed against authority, representation and majority rule. Put in contrast to that approach is the anarchist reclamation, the understanding of anarchy as democracy radicalized. The article shows how the critique of democracy typifies classical anarchist thought, while reclamation of democracy breeds in post-classical anarchism after 1939. Yet these lines of thought also coexist historically, and they both continue into our days. Anarchism is now depicted in terms of radical democracy, while a reclaimed critique once again dissociates anarchy from democracy. In an attempt to recognize dialogue between them, this article suggests that divergent approaches articulate an impossible argument that could further the route toward anarchy.

  • “We do this because the market demands it” : alternative meat production and the speciesist logic
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Agriculture and Human Values. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0889-048X .- 1572-8366. ; 36:1, s. 127-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past decades’ substantial growth in globalized meat consumption continues to shape the international political economy of food and agriculture. This political economy of meat composes a site of contention; in Brazil, where livestock production is particularly thriving, large agri-food corporations are being challenged by alternative food networks. This article analyzes experiential and experimental accounts of such an actor—a collectivized pork cooperative tied to Brazil’s Landless Movement—which seeks to navigate the political economy of meat. The ethnographic case study documents these livestock farmers’ ambiguity towards complying with the capitalist commodification process, required by the intensifying meat market. Moreover, undertaking an intersectional approach, the article theorizes how animal-into-food commodification in turn depends on the speciesist logic, a normative human/non-human divide that endorses the meat commodity. Hence the article demonstrates how alternative food networks at once navigate confines of capitalist commodification and the speciesist logic that impels the political economy of meat.

  • Intrinsic disorder and tandem repeats - match made in evolution : Computational studies of molecular evolution
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Proteins are both the building blocks and workers of the cell, carrying out most of the important functions. For a long time, their structure has been regarded as the primary factor for their function, but intrinsically disordered proteins demonstrate an alternative to this paradigm. Disordered proteins can temporarily assume different forms based on their interactions with other molecules and play critical roles in several biological processes, including cell signaling and regulation of gene expression.Tandem repeats are repeated patterns in genetic sequence. The role of tandem repeats in many protein structures is well documented today, but their role in disordered proteins is not entirely clear. This thesis aims to shed light on the mechanisms by which protein disorder and tandem repeats are linked.Only 2.5% of residues in all known protein sequences are characterized by the overlap of tandem repeats and protein disorder as described in Paper III, but many of these proteins have crucial functions and are linked to human diseases. Short tandem repeats emerge in this study as most frequently occurring in disordered regions. Genetic variation in disordered proteins accounts for length differences in eukaryotic genes (Paper I) and many orphan, recently evolved proteins, are disordered due to high GC content (Paper II). A medical application of this research is illustrated in the thesis with examples of variations in short tandem repeats (STRs) and their role in human diseases. Paper IV presents a comprehensive resource of human STR variation and Paper V illustrates how it can be used to identify specific STRs of interest, such as in the case of colorectal cancer where variations in certain STRs lead to altered gene expression patterns in tumors.

  • WebSTR : A Population-wide Database of Short Tandem Repeat Variation in Humans
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 435:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Short tandem repeats (STRs) are consecutive repetitions of one to six nucleotide motifs. They are hypervariable due to the high prevalence of repeat unit insertions or deletions primarily caused by polymerase slippage during replication. Genetic variation at STRs has been shown to influence a range of traits in humans, including gene expression, cancer risk, and autism. Until recently STRs have been poorly studied since they pose significant challenges to bioinformatics analyses. Moreover, genome-wide analysis of STR variation in population-scale cohorts requires large amounts of data and computational resources. However, the recent advent of genome-wide analysis tools has resulted in multiple large genome-wide datasets of STR variation spanning nearly two million genomic loci in thousands of individuals from diverse populations. Here we present WebSTR, a database of genetic variation and other characteristics of genome-wide STRs across human populations. WebSTR is based on reference panels of more than 1.7 million human STRs created with state of the art repeat annotation methods and can easily be extended to include additional cohorts or species. It currently contains data based on STR genotypes for individuals from the 1000 Genomes Project, H3Africa, the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project and colorectal cancer patients from the TCGA dataset.WebSTR is implemented as a relational database with programmatic access available through an API and a web portal for browsing data. The web portal is publicly available at https://webstr.ucsd.edu.

  • A Crisis in Swedish Child Welfare? On Risk, Control and Trust
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social Work and Society. - 1613-8953. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent decades, Swedish out-of-home care has been criticised for a number of reasons. In this article, based on research and public debate, we discuss this criticism as well as the institutional responses that have been evoked. We use the concepts of risk, control and trust to structure the analysis, which outlines three core issues portrayed as problematic: a) certain principles of the Swedish child welfare system with relevance for the placement of children and adolescence, b) the quality of out-of-home care and c) the privatisation of out-of-home care and the possibility of generating profits on such services. The institutional response to the criticism has mainly been increased control measures, but the development is not uniform - trust and control-oriented responses are often combined. We conclude the article by relating Swedish out-of-home care to international child welfare trends, discussing the institutional responses and the implications for social work practice.
