- This article concerns generation and food morality, drawing on video recordings of dinners in Swedish middle-class families. A detailed analysis of affect displays during one family dinner extends prior work on food morality (Ochs, Pontecorvo, & Fasulo 1996; Grieshaber 1997; Bourdieu 2003; Wiggins 2004), documenting ways in which participants may shift between distinct GENERATIONAL POSITIONS with respect to affects and food morality (from “irresponsiblechild” to caretaker positions). In our recordings, an elder sibling is shifting between a series of contrasting affective stances (Ochs & Schieffelin 1989; M. Goodwin 2006; Stivers 2008), linked to generational positions along an implicit age continuum: positioning himself, at one end of the continuum, as his young brother’s accomplice, and at the other as an adult, aserious guardian of food morality. This study shows that generational positionsare not fixed, but are positions adopted as parts of language socializationand interactional events.

Large-scale collective action to avoid an Amazon tipping point - key actors and interventions

- The destruction of the Amazon is a major global environmental issue, not only because of greenhouse gas emissions or direct impacts on biodiversity and livelihoods, but also due to the forest's role as a tipping element in the Earth System. With nearly a fifth of the Amazon already lost, there are already signs of an imminent forest dieback process that risks transforming much of the rainforest into a drier ecosystem, with climatic implications across the globe. There is a large body of literature on the underlying drivers of Amazon deforestation. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the behavioral and institutional microfoundations of change. Fundamental issues concerning cooperation, as well as the mechanisms facilitating or hampering such actions, can play a much more central role in attempts to unravel and address Amazon deforestation. We thus present the issue of preventing the Amazon biome from crossing a biophysical tipping point as a large-scale collective action problem. Drawing from collective action theory, we apply a novel analytical framework on Amazon conservation, identifying six variables that synthesize relevant collective action stressors and facilitators: information, accountability, harmony of interests, horizontal trust, knowledge about consequences, and sense of responsibility. Drawing upon literature and data, we assess Amazon deforestation and conservation through our heuristic lens, showing that while growing transparency has made information availability a collective action facilitator, lack of accountability, distrust among actors, and little sense of responsibility for halting deforestation remain key stressors. We finalize by discussing interventions that can help break the gridlock.

- Under de senaste decennierna har fastighetsägare, byggbolag, banker och riskkapitalister tjänat enorma summor på bostäder, medan andra förlorat sina hem eller sett sina bostadskostnader öka kraftigt. Den sociala bostadspolitiken har övergivits, hemlösheten har ökat och bostadsstandarden har försämrats. Samtidigt har det finansiella systemet blivit centrerat kring en bolånespiral som har gjort hushållen och den svenska ekonomin otroligt sårbara.Sverige behöver ett nytt, socialt och klimatanpassat bostadssystem, men ett sådant kan bara åstadkommas genom radikala förändringar. Utifrån en gedigen genomgång av över hundra års svensk bostadshistoria analyserar "Kris i bostadsfrågan" orsakerna till och konsekvenserna av att bostadens bruksvärde helt har kommit att överskuggas av dess bytesvärde, och föreslår hur den pågående krisen – med radikala förändringar i politik, finans och byggande – skulle kunna demonteras och utgöra grunden för ett nytt bostadssystem, där alla människors behov av ett hem står i centrum.

- Den övergripande fråga som ställs i rapporten är: hur kan universitet och högskolor upprätthålla kvalitet i utbildningen? Undersökningen bärs upp av tre delar där vi studerar 1) om högskolepedagogiska kurser stärker lärare som pedagoger; 2) huruvida det finns incitament för universitetslärare att satsa på pedagogisk verksamhet; samt 3) vilka förutsättningar lektorer ges att inom ramen för sin tjänst fullgöra det pedagogiska uppdraget. I den första delstudien finner vi att pedagogiska kurser haft positiva effekter på deltagarnas upplevda trygghet i lärarrollen. Samtidigt förändras inte kursdeltagarnas grundläggande förhållningssätt till undervisning. I delstudie två finner vi att incitamenten att satsa på det pedagogiska uppdraget är relativt svaga, eftersom sakkunniga i allmänhet lägger liten vikt vid pedagogiska meriter jämfört med vetenskapliga. I den tredje delstudien undersöks balansen mellan forskning och undervisning för lektorer i statsvetenskap. Resultaten visar att skillnaden i undervisningsplikt, liksom kompensationen för likvärdiga undervisningsuppdrag, varierar mycket mellan lärosäten. Förutsättningarna för det pedagogiska uppdraget ser således väldigt olika ut för lektorer beroende på var de är anställda.

- I det här kapitlet analyserar vi de spänningar som finns inom det pedagogiska uppdraget sett ur universitetslärarens perspektiv: å ena sidan kräver högskolans huvudmän, intresseorganisationer och förståsigpåare att kraven på pedagogisk meritering måste höjas och skärpas, å andra sidan, trots att högskolepedagogiska kurser i allt högre grad gjorts till obligatorier, nödvändiga för anställning och befordran som universitetslärare, så har den pedagogiska fortbildningens värde ändå urholkats. Å ena sidan är det forskningsmeriter som är hårdvaluta i konkurrensen om tjänster, å andra sidan förväntas en svensk universitetslärare lägga 70-100 procent av sin arbetstid på undervisning. Å ena sidan kräver lärosätena att sökande till lektorat på ett alltmer omfattande sätt dokumenterar sina pedagogiska meriter, å andra sidan tillmäts pedagogiska kvalifikationer inte någon avgörande betydelse när sakkunniga värderar sökandes meriter i tillsättningsprocessen.

- Recipes are not only part of today's cooking culture, they are also part of the Swedish syllabus of home economics. The aim of this study was to investigate what kinds of difficulties students with mild intellectual disabilities have using recipes during cooking lessons in home economics. We conducted an ethnographically inspired approach, with a total of 44h of accompanying observations. Three compulsory schools for students with intellectual disabilities were enrolled in the study, and 37 students and three teachers were included. The socio-cultural theory of learning has been used as a theoretical framework. The findings reveal both that recipes are central artefacts during the cooking lessons and that the students have various difficulties using the recipes. The difficulties vary, and they concern both how the recipes are designed and the purport of the recipes. Difficulties in relation to the design included, for example, the separation of ingredients and instructions in the text and the large amount of information given in both the whole and the parts of the recipes. The difficulties in relation to the purport – that is, the meaning or sense of the recipe – were the ingredients, the kitchen utensils and the knowledge of how to perform a specific task. These difficulties can be considered special in relation to the use of the recipes. We suggest the concept of ‘recipe literacy’ to capture the complex knowledge of using recipes.

Media perception and trust among disaster survivors : Tsunami survivors' interaction with journalists, media exposure, and associations with trust in media and authorities

- A critical part of disaster communication is media coverage in the interface of the afflicted, media, and authorities. One communication key is building trust. Disaster survivors encounter journalists in a high-stress context, but little is known about their perceptions of these interactions and the subsequent media exposure. The aim of this study is to explore how survivors 6 years after a major disaster perceived their encounters with journalists and exposure in the media, as well as their level of trust in the media, compared with government and authorities. Data were used from a longitudinal study of Swedish tourists, repatriated from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, surveyed up to 6 years after the tsunami to assess posttraumatic stress (PTS) and effects on mental health. At 6 years after, the survey included questions about survivors' perceptions of journalist interactions (reported by n = 311), of their own media exposure (n = 177), and survivors' trust in media organizations and public authorities (n = 1,181). Tsunami survivors mainly perceived interactions with journalists as being professional. There were 14% who reported that the interactions were supportive and 17% that the interactions were a strain. Similarly, most participants had a neutral view concerning the subsequent media coverage or exposure, although 12% experienced media exposure as stressful and 12% reported that it had been involuntary. Finally, the survivors indicated higher confidence and trust in Swedish radio and TV as compared to the Swedish authorities, and the participants' level of trust in the media was associated with their perceptions of journalists, r = 0.34, p < 0.001, and media coverage, r = 0.47, p < 0.001. Disaster survivors mainly agreed with emotionally neutral statements about interacting with the media, the performance of journalists on site, and their own media exposure. Nonetheless, a substantial minority found the encounters and exposure to be negative, and the results suggest a link between personal experiences or perceptions and trust in the media.

- The Maastricht Treaty (the “Treaty”) first introduced the status of EU citizenship. The twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty, marked in 2013, was declared the European Year of the Citizen. Union citizenship has been understood as the world’s first post-national citizenship, although it is still complementary to national citizenships. EU citizens enjoy rights that have been expanded, modified, and reinterpreted in light of the EU integration process. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has been a driving force in this process. This twentieth anniversary has provided the occasio for this special issue. Indeed, much has happened over the last two decades. The Maastricht Treaty entered into force on the heels of German reunification, and afterwards, a series of EU treaties followed: The Amsterdam Treaty, the Nice Charter of Fundamental Rights, the aborted constitutionalization process and the Rome Treaty in 2004, and the Treaty of Lisbon. The Euro took over former national currencies in 2002; the enlargement process led to today’s twenty-eight Member States. But the ratio of this special issue is based on other events as linked to the 2008 financial crisis, bailouts, the fiscal compact, and similar measures. In a nutshell, the timeliness of this volume is linked to the current financial disarray. Since prognosis presupposes diagnosis, no further words are necessary as to the importance of this task. It is (almost) self-evident that before taking action and preparing for the future, one needs to address the very first question: Nosce te ipsum...
