  • Markets
  • 2011. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our lives have gradually become dominated by markets. They are not only at the heart of capitalistic economies all over the world, but also central in public debates. This insightful book brings together existing knowledge on markets from sociology, economics and anthropology, and systematically investigates the different forms of markets we encounter daily in our social lives.Aspers starts by defining what a market actually is, analyzing its essential elements as well as its necessary preconditions and varied consequences. An important theme in the book is that a whole host of markets are embedded within one other and in social life at large, and Aspers discusses these in the context of other forms of economic coordination, such as networks and organizations. Combining theory with empirical examples, the book cuts to the core of understanding how different markets function, the role they have played in history, and how they come into being. This accessible and theoretically rich book will be essential reading for upper-level students seeking to make sense of markets and their complex role in social life.

  • Sociology of Fashion : Order and Change
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Annual Review of Sociology. - : Annual Reviews. - 0360-0572 .- 1545-2115. ; 39, s. 171-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we synthesize and analyze sociological understandingof fashion, with the main part of the review devoted to classical andrecent sociological work. To further the development of this largelyinterdisciplinary field, we also highlight the key points of research inother disciplines. We define fashion as an unplanned process of recurrentchange against a backdrop of order in the public realm. Weclarify this definition after tracing fashion’s origins and history. As asocial phenomenon, fashion has been culturally and economically significantsince the dawn of Modernity and has increased in importancewith the emergence of mass markets, both in terms of production andconsumption. Most research on this topic is concerned with dress, butwe argue that there are no domain restrictions that should constrainfashion theories. We identify venues around which sociologists coulddevelop further research in this field.

  • Trade shows and the creation of market and industry
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Sociological Review. - : Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0038-0261 .- 1467-954X. ; 59:4, s. 758-778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study addresses the question of the constitution of markets in advanced societies.Specifically, the article studies the role of the traveling trade show in creatingthe real time computing market, which is part of the US electronics sector, duringthe mid-1990’s. Real time computing products assist the transfer, storage and processingof digital signals in real time and support many of the internet applicationswe use today.By applying ethnographic methods,we explore the general question ofhow economic actors cope with uncertainty in the phase of market-making and atthe cutting edge of technology. The paper makes two contributions to the existingliterature. First, it shows that the attempt to organize a trade show in real timecomputing was triggered by the uncertainty experienced by sellers regarding theidentity of prospective buyers and about the exact use to which they would put theemergent technology which is offered for sale. Secondly, we trace the history of anemergent market. We claim that trade shows for innovative products are importantvenues at which markets coalesce. The identification and ordering of market actors, the institutionalization of a distinct business culture and the social networks developedamong market actors and across the subsidiary markets provided the basicsocial infrastructure for what later became known as the real time computingindustry.

  • Public libraries as public sphere institutions : A comparative study of perceptions of the public library's role in six European countries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; 75:6, s. 1396-1415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of public libraries as institutions underpinning a democratic public sphere as reasons legitimizing libraries compared to reasons that are more traditional and the actual use of libraries as public sphere arenas.Design/methodology/approachA survey of representative samples of the adult population in six countries – Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Hungary and Switzerland – was undertaken.FindingsLegitimations related to the libraries role as a meeting place and arena for public debate are ranked as the 3 least important out of 12 possible legitimations for upholding a public library service. Libraries are, however, used extensively by the users to access citizenship information and to participate in public sphere relevant meetings.Originality/valueFew studies have empirically analyzed the role of libraries in upholding a democratic and sustainable public sphere. This study contributes in filling that gap.

  • Producing and consuming knowledge in social work practice : Research and development activities in a Swedish context.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Evidence and policy. - : Policy Press. - 1744-2648 .- 1744-2656. ; 5:2, s. 127-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and practice.

  • Wellbeing, emotional response and stress among lay responders dispatched to suspected out-of-hospital cardiac arrests
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier Ireland Ltd. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; 170, s. 352-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Systems for smartphone dispatch of lay responders to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and bring automated external defibrillators to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) are advocated by recent international guidelines and emerging worldwide. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the emotional responses, posttraumatic stress reactions and levels of wellbeing among smartphone-alerted lay responders dispatched to suspected OHCAs. Methods: Lay responders were stratified by level of exposure: unexposed (Exp-0), tried to reach (Exp-1), and reached the suspected OHCA (Exp-2). Participants rated their emotional responses online, at 90 minutes and at 4–6 weeks after an incident. Level of emotional response was measured in two dimensions of core affect: “alertness” – from deactivation to activation, and “pleasantness” – from unpleasant to pleasant. At 4–6 weeks, WHO wellbeing index and level of posttraumatic stress (PTSD) were also rated. Results: Altogether, 915 (28%) unexposed and 1471 (64%) exposed responders completed the survey. Alertness was elevated in the exposed groups: Exp-0: 6.7 vs. Exp-1: 7.3 and Exp-2: 7.5, (p < 0.001) and pleasantness was highest in the unexposed group: 6.5, vs. Exp-1: 6.3, and Exp-2: 6.1, (p < 0.001). Mean scores for PTSD at follow-up was below clinical cut-off, Exp-0: 9.9, Exp-1: 8.9 and Exp-2: 8.8 (p = 0.065). Wellbeing index showed no differences, Exp-0: 78.0, Exp-1: 78.5 and Exp-2: 79.9 (p = 0.596). Conclusion: Smartphone dispatched lay responders rated the experience as high-energy and mainly positive. No harm to the lay responders was seen. The exposed groups had low posttraumatic stress scores and high-level general wellbeing at follow-up. © 2021

  • Hardworking women: representations of lone mothers in the Swedish daily press
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Feminist Media Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1468-0777 .- 1471-5902. ; 21:1, s. 132-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lone mothers are a diverse group but it has been argued in the previous research that they tend to be homogenised. This article explores representations of single mothers in Swedish newspapers. Material from the two largest morning papers and the two largest tabloids was collected from the years 2015–2017. The results of the study suggest that although the newspaper representations do not fully reflect the diversity of social realities, there are indeed varying images of lone mothers in the sample. A recurring representation is as a comparatively poor and hardworking—even heroic—woman, who in political argumentation is referred to as someone in need of societal support and policy reforms. A less frequent representation, that often occurs in lengthy, in-depth pieces, is the affluent official person who despite her prosperity struggles with combining single (good) motherhood with her career, or the middle-class woman who becomes a lone mother via assisted reproductive technologies. Teenage motherhood (i.e., age), race/ethnicity, sexuality, and welfare dependence are seldom, if at all, alluded to. There is no vilification or condemnation of the lone mother, as has been found in research on other national contexts.

  • Preparing Preservice Teachers to Teach Academic Integrity and Ethics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ethics and Integrity in Teacher Education. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031169229 - 9783031169212 ; , s. 43-54
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusion of ethics and integrity in preservice teacher education can refer to several contexts. The first context is academic integrity for preservice teachers with a focus on incorporating academic integrity in their own studies within higher education, as well as teaching them different components of academic writing including proper referencing techniques to enable them to write their own academic texts. The second context is developing the professional ethics of these future teachers, as a lived practice as well as through ethical codes. The third context is giving preservice teachers pedagogical and didactic knowledge and instruments to teach academic integrity and ethics to their future students in primary and secondary education, in order to prepare them for their own higher education endeavours. While attention is paid to the first and the second context, the third one is only rarely treated as a part of preservice teacher education as it is usually assumed that the first context is indirectly giving enough preparation for a preservice teacher to subsequently mediate ethics and integrity to his or her students. In this paper, we argue that this assumption is problematic and propose the inclusion of the third context – preparing future teachers to teach academic integrity and ethics – in preservice teacher education. Although the chapter uses the preservice teacher education in Sweden as a starting point, the three ethical contexts that are identified are not limited to any particular national preservice education system but are relevant in other similar frameworks as well.
