  • Job insecurity and risk of diabetes : a meta-analysis of individual participant data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: CMJA. Canadian Medical Association Journal. Onlineutg. Med tittel. - : Canadian Medical Association,Association Medicale Canadienne. - 0820-3946 .- 1488-2329. ; 188:17-18, s. E447-E455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Job insecurity has been associated with certain health outcomes. We examined the role of job insecurity as a risk factor for incident diabetes.METHODS: We used individual participant data from 8 cohort studies identified in 2 open-access data archives and 11 cohort studies participating in the Individual-Participant-Data Meta-analysis in Working Populations Consortium. We calculated study-specific estimates of the association between job insecurity reported at baseline and incident diabetes over the follow-up period. We pooled the estimates in a meta-analysis to produce a summary risk estimate.RESULTS: The 19 studies involved 140 825 participants from Australia, Europe and the United States, with a mean follow-up of 9.4 years and 3954 incident cases of diabetes. In the preliminary analysis adjusted for age and sex, high job insecurity was associated with an increased risk of incident diabetes compared with low job insecurity (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.19, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.30). In the multivariable-adjusted analysis restricted to 15 studies with baseline data for all covariates (age, sex, socioeconomic status, obesity, physical activity, alcohol and smoking), the association was slightly attenuated (adjusted OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01-1.24). Heterogeneity between the studies was low to moderate (age- and sex-adjusted model: I(2) = 24%, p = 0.2; multivariable-adjusted model: I(2) = 27%, p = 0.2). In the multivariable-adjusted analysis restricted to high-quality studies, in which the diabetes diagnosis was ascertained from electronic medical records or clinical examination, the association was similar to that in the main analysis (adjusted OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.04-1.35).INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest that self-reported job insecurity is associated with a modest increased risk of incident diabetes. Health care personnel should be aware of this association among workers reporting job insecurity.

  • Ingår i: Advances in Production Management Systems. Smart Manufacturing and Logistics Systems: Turning Ideas into Action. - Cham : Springer Nature Switzerland AG. - 9783031164101 - 9783031164118 ; , s. 521-528, s. 521-528
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developing digital dashboards (DD) that support staff in monitoring, identifying anomalies, and facilitating corrective actions are decisive for achieving the benefits of Smart Production Logistics (SPL). However, existing literature about SPL has not sufficiently investigated the characteristics of DD allowing staff to enhance operational performance. This conceptual study identifies the characteristics of DD in SPL for enhancing operational performance of material handling. The study presents preliminary findings from an ongoing laboratory development, and identifies six characteristics of DD. These include monitoring, analysis, prediction, identification, recommendation, and control. The study discusses the implications of these characteristics when applied to energy consumption, makespan, on-time delivery, and status for material handling. The study proposes the prototype of a DD in a laboratory environment involving Autonomous Mobile Robots.

  • Digital-twin-based decision support of dynamic maintenance task prioritization using simulation-based optimization and genetic programming
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Decision Analytics Journal. - : Elsevier. - 2772-6622. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern decision support systems need to be connected online to equipment so that the large amount of data available can be used to guide the decisions of shop floor operators, making full use of the potential of industrial manufacturing systems. This paper investigates a novel optimization and data analytic method to implement such a decision support system, based on heuristic generation using genetic programming and simulation-based optimization running on a digital twin. Such a digital-twin-based decision support system allows the proactively searching of the best attribute combinations to be used in a data-driven composite dispatching rule for the short-term corrective maintenance task prioritization. Both the job (e.g., bottlenecks) and operator priorities use multiple criteria, including competence, utilization, operator walking distances on the shop floor, bottlenecks, work-in-process, and parallel resource availability. The data-driven composite dispatching rules are evaluated using a digital twin, built for a real-world machining line, which simulates the effects of decisions regarding disruptions. Experimental results show improved productivity because of using the composite dispatching rules generated by such heuristic generation method compared to the priority dispatching rules based on similar attributes and methods. The improvement is more pronounced when the number of operators is reduced. This paper thus offers new insights about how shop floor data can be transformed into useful knowledge with a digital-twin-based decision support system to enhance resource efficiency.

  • Industry 4.0 and opportunities for energy sustainability
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the interactions of Industry 4.0 and sustainability is a cutting-edge research topic. The present study aims to contribute to this research topic by explaining how Industry 4.0 may contribute to energy sustainability. The present study performs a content-centric qualitative review of the extant digitalization literature to identify the primary energy sustainability functions of Industry 4.0. The interpretive structural modeling technique is further used for mapping the interrelationships among various energy sustainability functions identified. The interpretive model developed, and the Matrice d'Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée àun Classement analysis offered exciting insights into the Industry 4.0-energy sustainability interactions. Findings show that Industry 4.0 promotes energy sustainability via a very complex mechanism that involves ten interrelated functions. Contrary to the general opinion, production efficiency offered by the digitalization of the manufacturing industry is not the immediate and most essential energy efficiency outcome of the digital industrial transformation. Industry 4.0 primarily contributes to energy sustainability by enabling the energy industry to reshape its operating landscape and enjoy more advanced, intelligent, and complicated energy production and distribution equipment. The digitalization of the energy demand sector, digitalization of the manufacturing industry, and the introduction of smarter and more sustainable products are among the main opportunities of Industry 4.0 for energy sustainability. Overall, the study and the ISM model of energy sustainability developed explains how Industry 4.0 contributes to energy sustainability via different functions and how each function is placed within the structural model based on its driving and dependence powers.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globalization, market turbulence, and global crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic push the manufacturing industry to rush towards automation, data-centricity, and greater interconnectivity under the ongoing digital industrial transformation known as Industry 4.0. Smaller manufactures worldwide strive to keep up with the digitalization race and secure sustainable competitiveness. Fierce competition and market turbulence force Middle Eastern manufacturers to make the most of the digitalization race. The present study reports on the Industry 4.0 digital transformation and development of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in Iran, one of the most economically influential countries within the Middle East. Smaller manufacturers in Iran consider Industry 4.0 to improve productivity, operate in the data-driven economy, and increase business resilience. Although the implementation rate of generic digital technologies has been somewhat promising among Iranian manufacturers, the present report identifies significant barriers slowing the implementation rate of more advanced Industry 4.0 technologies such as predictive analytics and blockchain technology. Overall, Industry 4.0 transformation has provided Iranian manufacturing enterprises with meaningful opportunities and benefits. Nonetheless, smaller manufacturers cannot generally develop an all-inclusive strategic plan for navigating digitalization efforts. This issue, along with many other barriers such as resource scarcity, digitalization immaturity, and cybersecurity risks, has slowed down the digital transformation of the Iranian manufacturing industry.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fourth industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0, and the underlying digital transformation, is a cutting-edge research topic across various disciplines. Industry 4.0 literature is growing exponentially, overexpanding the current understanding of the digital industrial revolution through thousands of academic publications. This unprecedented growth calls for a systematic review of the concept, scope, definition, and functionality of Industry 4.0. Such systematic review should address the existing ambiguities and deliver a clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date overview of this phenomenon, including the possible implications for sustainability. Consistently, the present study carried out a systematic literature review of related articles, published online within the Industry 4.0 discipline until November 2020. The systematic literature review identified 745 eligible articles and applied extensive qualitative and quantitative data analysis methodically. The study provides a descriptive assessment of eligible articles’ properties and offers a unified conceptualization of Industry 4.0 and the underlying building blocks. The study explains how the implications of Industry 4.0 for value creation expand beyond the manufacturing industry. The study further describes the sustainability value drivers of the fourth industrial revolution and identifies the conditions on which digital industrial transformation success lays. Overall, findings reveal that Industry 4.0 transformation could address pressing issues of sustainable development goals, particularly concerning the manufacturing-economic development. The study also draws on the findings and offers important theoretical and practical implications, highlights the existing gaps within the literature, and discusses the possible future research directions.

  • Bringing together Lean and simulation : a comprehensive review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 58:1, s. 87-117
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lean is and will still be one of the most popular management philosophies in the Industry 4.0 context and simulation is one of its key technologies. Many authors discuss about the benefits of combining Lean and simulation to better support decision makers in system design and improvement. However, there is a lack of reviews in the domain. Therefore, this paper presents a four-stage comprehensive review and analysis of existing literature on their combination. The aim is to identify the state of the art, existing methods and frameworks for combining Lean and simulation, while also identifying key research perspectives and challenges. The main trends identified are the increased interest in the combination of Lean and simulation in the Industry 4.0 context and in their combination with optimisation, Six Sigma, as well as sustainability. The number of articles in these areas is likely to continue to grow. On the other hand, we highlight six gaps found in the literature regarding the combination of Lean and simulation, which may induce new research opportunities. Existing technical, organisational, as well as people and culture related challenges on the combination of Lean and simulation are also discussed.
