  • On the selection of relevant historical demand data for revenue management applied to transportation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management. - : Springer. - 1476-6930 .- 1477-657X. ; 22:4, s. 266-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The success of revenue management models depends to a large extent on the quality of historical data used to forecast future bookings. Several theoretical models and best practices of handing historical data have been developed over the years, that all rely on assumptions about underlying distribution and seasonality in the historical data. In this paper, we describe a novel method that compares the fingerprints of the departure to optimise and selects historical departures without making assumptions on data distribution or seasonality. By evaluating the method at the departure level and using the Nemenyi rank test, we show the method’s application in the ferry transportation business and discuss its advantages.

  • Encounters in close care relations from the perspective of personal assistants working with persons with severe disablility.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Health & Social Care in the Community. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0966-0410 .- 1365-2524. ; 18:2, s. 180-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden adults with major and sustainable disabilities can be granted publicly financed support in the form of personal assistance after assessment and decision-making in accordance with government rules. The purpose of the present study was to explore more deeply the encounters in close care relations between personal assistants and disabled persons of working age, as well as the prerequisites for and obstacles to the success of such encounters, this from the perspective of the personal assistants. Thirty-two personal assistants (22- to 55-year old) who worked for 32 persons with serious neurological diseases living at home were interviewed. The transcribed unstructured interviews were qualitatively analysed using latent content analysis. The analyses resulted in five main themes: Perceptive awareness, Entering into the other's role, Mutuality, Handling the relationship and Personal difficulties facing the assistant. These themes illustrated that a prerequisite for the encounter's being meaningful is that the assistant should be able to observe and understand the unique needs of the disabled person. The assistant must furthermore be able to put herself/himself into the other person's position. It is also important that the personal chemistry between the assistant and the disabled person should be good. Being able to share feelings and interests with the functionally impaired person provides the assistant with positive emotional confirmation of a good relationship. A distressing dilemma the assistant faces is that of distinguishing between the working relationship and the personal friendship. In this borderline area are found experiences, feelings and events that the assistant may view as negative or even unacceptable. This study contributes to the understanding of the complexity underlying the daily community care of disabled persons with an extensive need for care and assistance.

  • Increased mortality in the A/A genotype of the SNP rs28372698 of interleukin 32
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine. - : SPANDIDOS PUBL LTD. - 1792-0981 .- 1792-1015. ; 21:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the major causes of mortality in the western hemisphere is cardiovascular disease. Therefore, a variety of markers to identify those at risk are required. Interleukin-32 (IL-32) is a cytokine that is associated with inflammation. The aim of the current study was to investigate variations in single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-32 and plasma expression, and their associations with mortality. A population of 486 elderly community-living persons were evaluated. The participants were followed for 7.1 years and underwent a clinical examination and blood sampling. SNP analyses of IL-32 rs28372698 using allelic discrimination and plasma measurement of IL-32, using ELISA, were performed. During the follow-up period, 140 (28.8%) all-cause and 87 (17.9%) cardiovascular deaths were registered. No significant difference between mortality and plasma concentration of IL-32 was observed. The A/A genotype group exhibited significantly higher all-cause mortality (P=0.036), and an almost two-fold increased risk in a multivariate Cox regression model for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. A highly significant difference in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality between the A/A and the T/T groups was demonstrated (P=0.015 resp. P=0.014). In the present study, the cytokine IL-32 was demonstrated to have prognostic information, with an increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality for those with the A/A genotype rs28372698 of IL-32. The A/A genotype could therefore be regarded as a possible biomarker for mortality risk that may be used to offer optimized cardiovascular patient handling in the future. However, the present study sample was small, and the results should be regarded as hypothesis-generating.

  • Multi-objective optimization of material model parameters of an adhesive layer by using SPEA2
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in structural and multidisciplinary optimization. - : The International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ISSMO). - 9780646943947 ; , s. 249-254
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of multi material structures in industry, especially in the automotive industry are increasing. To overcome the difficulties in joining these structures, adhesives have several benefits over traditional joining methods. Therefore, accurate simulations of the entire process of fracture including the adhesive layer is crucial. In this paper, material parameters of a previously developed meso mechanical finite element (FE) model of a thin adhesive layer are optimized using the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2). Objective functions are defined as the error between experimental data and simulation data. The experimental data is provided by previously performed experiments where an adhesive layer was loaded in monotonically increasing peel and shear. Two objective functions are dependent on 9 model parameters (decision variables) in total and are evaluated by running two FEsimulations, one is loading the adhesive layer in peel and the other in shear. The original study converted the two objective functions into one function that resulted in one optimal solution. In this study, however, a Pareto frontis obtained by employing the SPEA2 algorithm. Thus, more insight into the material model, objective functions, optimal solutions and decision space is acquired using the Pareto front. We compare the results and show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Daily life after moving into a care home - experiences from older people, relatives and contact persons
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 16:9, s. 1712-1718
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims and objectives. To describe older people's experiences of daily life at the care home after admittance with respect to their perceptions of participation in the decision to move. Furthermore, the aim was to study the experiences of their relatives and contact persons with respect to the daily life of the same residents. Background. When older persons move into a care home, the whole family often play an important part. Thus, it is interesting to study how newly admitted older people, their relatives and staff members experience daily life in a modern care home. Methods. Qualitative design. The participants comprised a purposive sample of 13 residents, recently admitted to a care home, 69-90 years old, both single living and married, both moving from their own homes and from different institutions. Interviews were carried out with the older people (n = 13), their relatives (n = 10) and contact persons (n = 11). Results. The majority of the residents reported satisfaction with care home living. The relatives were also satisfied, secure and appreciated the privacy and homely atmosphere of the flat. The disadvantage of one-room flats was that the residents might have felt lonely. The relatives felt that the residents were bored, but few residents desired more activities, even if some of them longed for people to socialize with. For many older people, perhaps talking is the most important 'activity' at care homes. Concerning self-determination, some residents did not find it satisfactory. Relevance to clincial practice. Staff members must pay attention to residents' need to talk with people. For many older people, talking is perhaps the most important 'activity' at care homes. Nurses must safeguard residents' self-determination. When residents are in control of their lives, they may become satisfied with time.
