  • Djurhållning och betesdrift : Djur, människor och landskap i västra Östergötland under yngre bronsålder och äldre järnålder
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on animal husbandry and organised grazing in western Östergötland during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The primary aim is to investigate how animal husbandry was organised from a practical perspective. The thesis consists of a series of analyses of different source-material groups that illuminate various aspects of prehistoric animal husbandry. Only a small number of the archaeologically investigated three-aisled longhouses had a byre area. The livestock were mainly kept outdoors, in winter as well as in summer. The animal bones from settlements show that more beef was consumed and more horses were found at high-status settlements than at those of lower status. From the period 1000 BC–BC there are isolated hearths and hearth groups in central Östergötland that previously could not be connected to a specific archaeological context. In the author’s opinion, these sites represent bases in a system of well-organised grazing. It was here that shepherds and animals rested, ate and drank, and probably also overnighted. Many of the sites were used repeatedly during the entire period in question. In this landscape there are stone fence systems which show a strong connection to the settlement structure formed during the Late Iron Age, and parts of the systems seem to be medieval. They may also have elements from the Early Iron Age. The distribution of graves from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age coincides with the stone fence systems. A special type of site that has one or two graves, with particular kinds of superstructures, is linked to these areas. In historical time these areas comprised the central production grounds for animal husbandry, and it seems that the areas functioned as central grazing grounds as far back as the Late Bronze Age.

  • Relations and Runes : The Baltic Islands and Their Interactions During the Late Iron Age and Early Middle Ages
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In Relations and Runes a number of specialists from the fields of archaeology, numismatics and runology explore the complexity of developments and relations in the Baltic Sea region during the Late Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. The contributions in the book cover a wide spectrum of topics and approaches highlighting how islands functioned as nodes in interaction and communication, while constructing and maintaining individual identities. With special focus on the islands of Öland, Gotland and Bornholm, in-depth studies of specific archaeological materials are set in a broader context of cultural development and change in the Baltic. This book is the outcome of a joint venture between two research projects – The Viking Phenomenon and Everlasting Runes, and Gotland Museum.

  • 2000 år utan keramik? : mot en förståelse av keramiktraditionens försvinnande i Dalarna under mellanneolitikum

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, a worn prehistoric ceramic sherd was found in a field outside the city of Borlange in the province of Dalarna, central Sweden. The sherd has been identified as a fragment of a vessel belonging to the Battle Axe culture, the first one ever found in Dalarna. At the same time, the sherd is the youngest known Stone Age pottery in the province, and after that the craft seems to have disappeared. The first reappearance dates to the Early Iron Age, 500 BCE-400 CE. Both south and north of Dalarna, ceramic production carried on continuously from the time it was introduced during the Neolithic. With very few exceptions (including northernmost Norway), this applies to the entire northern circumpolar part of the world despite difficulties in finding raw materials, fuel and suitable weather to perform the craft. Dalarna offers all the prerequisites for producing pottery, but despite this, and despite decades of contract archeology in the province, it seems from the current state of research that this was not done for about 2000 years. The main question is therefore: how may we understand why the ceramic tradition ceased in Dalarna at the end of the Stone Age?

  • Gothemshammar : a late Bronze Age coastal rampart on Gotland
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 113:2, s. 65-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the results of a project aiming to use survey and excavation of the Gothemshammar rampart in a digital reconstruction to understand the site inits original landscape setting. Excavations uncovered internal construction details and dateable materials from domestic animals and charcoal. Fifteen AMS dates indicate that the rampart was built and used in the Late Bronze Age, c. 950–700 cal AD.Its northern end is situated at a steep scarp towards the current sea shore, andthe southern end is in an open slightly sloping terrain, currently about a kilometre from the sea. LiDAR data and an up-to-date shoreline displacement model indicatethat the seashore was about 10 m higher when the rampart was built and used thanit is today. The landscape reconstruction shows that the rampart originally cut offa headland on an islet that was strategically located at the mouth of an inland watersystem. To further understand the site’s Bronze Age context we made a spatial analysis of features tied to the same time frame, including other monumental structures(stone ships, burial cairns, other ramparts/enclosures) and metalwork hoards. It became evident that all kinds of monuments were mainly located close to the seashore on capes and islets. We could also see that the monuments, especially the stone ships, were mostly on the north shore of the ancient waterway and that its entry/exit where Gothemshammar is situated served as an important control point for travel into Gotland as well as overseas.
