  • Measurement of the t¯t¯ cross section and its ratio to the Z production cross section using pp collisions at √s=13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 848
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusive top-quark-pair production cross section ???̄ and its ratio to the ?-boson production cross section have been measured in proton–proton collisions at √? = 13.6 TeV, using 29 fb−1 of data collected in 2022 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Using events with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair and ?-tagged jets, and assuming Standard Model decays, the top-quark-pair production cross section is measured to be ???̄ = 850± 3(stat.) ± 18(syst.) ± 20(lumi.) pb. The ratio of the ??̄ and the ?-boson production cross sections is also measured, where the ?-boson contribution is determined for inclusive ?+?− and ?+?− events in a fiducial phase space. The relative uncertainty on the ratio is reduced compared to the ??̄ cross section, thanks to the cancellation of several systematic uncertainties. The result for the ratio, ???̄∕? = 1.145 ± 0.003(stat.) ± 0.021(syst.)±0.002(lumi.) is consistent with the Standard Model prediction using the PDF4LHC21 PDF set.

  • Measurement of the t(t)over-bart(t)over-bar production cross section in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of four-top-quark production using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) is presented. Events are selected if they contain a single lepton (electron or muon) or an opposite-sign lepton pair, in association with multiple jets. The events are categorised according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b-hadrons. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. The measured four-top-quark production cross section is found to be 26(-15)(+17) fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) significance of 1.9 (1.0) standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. The result is combined with the previous measurement performed by the ATLAS Collaboration in the multilepton final state. The combined four-top-quark production cross section is measured to be 24(-6)(+7) fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) signal significance of 4.7 (2.6) standard deviations over the background-only predictions. It is consistent within 2.0 standard deviations with the Standard Model expectation of 12.0 +/- 2.4 fb.

  • Measurement of the top-quark mass in tt¯ + 1-jet events collected with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - : SPRINGER. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2019:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A determination of the top-quark mass is presented using 20.2 fb−1 of 8 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The normalised differential cross section of top-quark pair production in association with an energetic jet is measured in the lepton+jets final state and unfolded to parton and particle levels. The unfolded distribution at parton level can be described using next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in terms of either the top-quark pole mass or the running mass as defined in the (modified) minimal subtraction scheme. A comparison between the experimental distribution and the theoretical prediction allows the top-quark mass to be extracted in the two schemes. The value obtained for the pole-mass scheme is: mtpole=171.1±0.4(stat)±0.9(syst)−0.3+0.7(theo)GeV The extracted value in the running-mass scheme is: mt(mt)=162.9±0.5(stat)±1.0(syst)−1.2+2.1(theo)GeV. The results for the top-quark mass using the two schemes are consistent, when translated from one scheme to the other. [Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2019, The Author(s).

  • Measurement of the total and differential cross-sections of tt(over-bar)W production in pp collisions at √ˆšs=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of inclusive and differential production cross-sections of a topquark-top-antiquark pair in association with a W boson (tt(over bar)W) are presented. They are performed by targeting final states with two same-sign or three isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and are based on √s = 13TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1, recorded from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive tt(over bar)W production cross-section is measured to be 880 ± 80 fb, compared to a reference theoretical prediction of 745 ± 50 (scale) ± 13 (2-loop approx.) ±  19 (PDF, αs) fb. Differential cross-section measurements characterise this process in detail for the first time. Several particle-level observables are compared with a variety of theoretical predictions, which generally agree well with the normalised differential cross-section results. Additionally, the relative charge asymmetry of tt(over bar)W+ and tt(over bar)W- is measured inclusively to be ArelC = 0.33 ± 0.05, in very good agreement with the theoretical prediction of 0.322 ± 0.003 (scale) ± 0.007 (PDF), as well as differentially.

  • Measurement of the total and differential Higgs boson production cross-sections at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector by combining the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ and H → γγ decay channels
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 2023:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The total and differential Higgs boson production cross-sections are measured through a combined statistical analysis of the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ and H → γγ decay channels. The results are based on a dataset of 139 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured total Higgs boson production cross-section is pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction of 55.6 ± 2.5 pb. All results from the two decay channels are compatible with each other, and their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions. A combined statistical interpretation of the measured fiducial cross-sections as a function of the Higgs boson transverse momentum is performed in order to probe the Yukawa couplings to the bottom and charm quarks. A similar interpretation is performed by including also the constraints from the measurements of Higgs boson production in association with a W or Z boson in the and decay channels.

  • Measurement of the transverse momentum distribution of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 80:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes precision measurements of the transverse momentum pTℓℓ (ℓ= e, μ) and of the angular variable ϕη∗ distributions of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in a mass range of 66–116 GeV. The analysis uses data from 36.1 fb- 1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Measurements in electron-pair and muon-pair final states are performed in the same fiducial volumes, corrected for detector effects, and combined. Compared to previous measurements in proton–proton collisions at s=7 and 8TeV, these new measurements probe perturbative QCD at a higher centre-of-mass energy with a different composition of initial states. They reach a precision of 0.2% for the normalized spectra at low values of pTℓℓ. The data are compared with different QCD predictions, where it is found that predictions based on resummation approaches can describe the full spectrum within uncertainties. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.
