  • Metal Hydrogen Interaction and Structural Characterization of Amorphous Materials from first principles
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory have been employed to investigate metal hydrogen interaction in transition, p-block and rare earth metals. Furthermore, the accuracy of the stochastic quenching method was tested in describing the structure of amorphous Fe(1-x)Zrx.The investigated systems of transition metal hydrides are V-H and ScZr(CoNi)2-H. For V-H, the main focus of the studies is the effect that strain has on the potential energy landscape which governs the metal hydrogen interactions. The investigation has focused on how the properties of hydrogen occupancy in the interstitial sites changes with strain and also how the hydrogen atoms themselves exert strain on the vanadium structure to lower the energy. Results on diffusion, induced strain and zero-point energy are presented which all reveal the considerable difference between tetrahedral and octahedral site occupancy. Diffusion was studied by employing ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to obtain diffusion coefficients and to map the movement of the hydrogen atom. A description of hydrogen in vanadium is provided from a fundamental basis that is expected to be applicable to any lattice gas system. For ScZr(CoNi)2-H, the difference of hydrogen occupancy in various interstitial sites and the hydrogen-induced strain was also investigated through calculations of the change in total volume as a function of hydrogen concentration. The fundamental properties of metal hydrogen bonding were investigated by studying the Zintl phase hydrides that are constituted of the electropositive metal of Nd or Gd and the electronegative metal Ga. Mixing metals of very different electronegativity gives rise to an intricate potential energy landscape in which the incorporation of hydrogen will have a big effect on both the electronic and atomic structure. From the theoretical side of the investigation, structural parameters are presented along with the density of states and Bader charge analysis to describe the hydrogen induced changes to the atomic and electronic structures. Finally, the accuracy of the stochastic quenching method in describing amorphous Fe(1-x)Zrx was evaluated by comparing simulated and measured EXAFS spectra. Once the structural agreement had been established the simulated structures were characterized through radial distribution functions and an analysis of the short-range order from Voronoi tessellation. The structural changes with respect to the composition parameter x were also evaluated.

  • First-Principles Studies of Materials Properties : Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions & Functional Materials
  • 2015
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents the first-principles studies of materials properties within the framework of the density functional theory (DFT). The thesis constitutes three main parts, i. e., pressure-induced phase transitions in solids, data-storage and clean-energy materials. The first part focuses on the predictions of crystal structures and the determinations of electronic properties of Xe-H2, FeB4 and Co3O4. Pressurizing Xe-H2 compound yields the formation of H-rich Xe(H2)8, which can exhibit a metallic feature at comparatively lower pressure than pure hydrogen. Hard superconducting FeB4 gets transformed into a novel transparent phase under pressure owing to the enhanced overlap of atomic cores. Spinel Co3O4 undergoes the phase transition from a cubic to a monoclinic because of the charge transfer between cations via the increased 3d-3d interactions. The second part involves the study of structural and electronic properties of phase-change memory materials (PCMs), i. e., Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and Ga-doped In2O3. Van der Waals (vdW) interaction must be considered to obtain accurate crystal structure of layered GST. For Ga-doped In2O3 (GIO), the local structure of amorphous GIO is found to resemble that of amorphous In2O3, except the vicinity of doping atoms. The electronic property of a-GIO is metallic, which considerably differs from the semiconducting feature of the crystalline GIO. This emphasizes the contrast in the conductivity of the crystalline and amorphous upon phase switching of GIO.The third part associates with the search for clean-energy materials, viz., hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and green Mg-ion batteries. For hydrogen production, the role of intrinsic point defects to water adsorption on ZnO(10-10) surface is investigated. The findings show that the Zn and O defect-sites are energetically not favorable for the water adsorption and dissociation. For the purpose of storing hydrogen in a solid phase, silicene, doped by alkaline and alkaline earth metals, is investigated. We find that Li-doped and Na-doped silicene can attain the superior storage capacity. For cathode material of Mg-ion batteries, Mg2Mo6S8, the diffusivity of Mg ions occurs through an available channel in the bulk with the onset temperature of 200 K.

  • Hydrogen storage characteristics of Li and Na decorated 2D boron phosphide
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Energy & Fuels. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2398-4902. ; 4:9, s. 4538-4546

    • Solid-state systems serve as a candidate for clean energy applications driven by current technological demands. In this effort, density functional theory (DFT) has become a valuable asset to investigate the intrinsic electronic properties and holds a substantial promise for guiding the discovery of new materials. Herein, we have investigated the Li and Na decorated 2D boron phosphide (BP) monolayer as a potential candidate for hydrogen storage due to its lightweight and structural stability. Li and Na adatoms prefer to adsorb at the center of the hexagon with the binding energies 0.36 and 0.26 eV, respectively. The thermodynamic stabilities of BP monolayer in cases of 4Li@BP and 4Na@BP systems were evaluated at room temperature using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The study of the electronic structure revealed that the semiconducting BP sheets become metallic after the adatom adsorption. It was found that the dispersed Li and Na atoms on the monolayer surface significantly increase both the hydrogen binding energies and the hydrogen storage capacities. With one-sided coverage of Li and Na atoms, four H2 molecules were adsorbed with a gravimetric capacity of 4.917 and 4.558 wt%, respectively. For double-sided adatom coverage, a total of 16H2 molecules was captured around 4Li@BP and 4Na@BP complex with a gravimetric capacity of 7.402 and 6.446 wt%, respectively. These results suggest that boron phosphide (BP) can act as an effective substrate for H2 storage by carefully engineering it with metal decoration.

  • Ab initio Lattice Dynamics : Hydrogen-dense and Other Materials
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents a theoretical study of materials under high pressure using ab initio lattice dynamics based on density functional theory and density functional perturbation theory using both super-cell and linear response approach. Ab initio lattice dynamics using super-cell approach is applied to compare our theoretical predictions with experimental findings. Phonon dispersion curves of fcc α-γ cerium are calculated and compared with inelastic X-ray scattering data. Pressure dependency of phonon density of states in two cubic phases TiO2 allows us to assign the observed cubic phase in experiments to be of fluorite rather than pyrite structure. Dynamical stability of cotunnite TiO2 phase at low pressure can explain the observed quenching phenomena in experiments. Our calculated O2 vibron mode in both ε-ζ phases of solid oxygen supports the hypothesis that both phases are iso-structural. Hydrogen-dense materials attract great attention not only because they open a path to study phenomena related to metallization (superconductivity) of solid hydrogen but also because they are closely related to important industrial applications (hydrogen storage). Using linear response method, we find that metallic fcc-AlH3 is dynamically stabilized in the range of 72-106 GPa and can persist at ambient pressure if finite temperature effects are considered. For SiH4, we test dynamical stability, Raman spectra, zero point energy, and utilize GW calculations for self energy correction. We find that a metallic tetragonal phase of SiH4 can be assigned to the experimentally observed one. Our ab initio lattice dynamics calculations based on density functional perturbation theory predict that fcc-YH3 is a pressure-induced superconductor with a high transition temperature of 40 K at 17.7 GPa. With increasing pressure this material undergoes a superconductor-metal-superconductor transition and the underlying mechanism of this transition can simultaneously explains also the observed metal-insulator transition at 25 GPa in YH3-δ.
