    • A Love Story in Viimsi Manor Anno Domini 1665. Some Links Between the First Swedish Novel and EstoniaStratonice is a prose story known to be the first novel written in Swedish. It was completed late in 1668, but not published until nearly 200 years later, in 1856. On publication the story turned out to be an autobiographical roman-à-clef. It had been written by Urban Hiärne, a twenty-six-year old Ingrian-born student of medicine at the university of Uppsala, after a romance of seduction that begun in May 1665, in Viimsi Manor near Tallinn (now the Estonian War Museum). As Hiärne was the son of an ordinary clergyman, whereas the object of his seductive efforts, Margareta Bielke, a girl twelve or thirteen years of age, belonged to the high nobility of Sweden, the young man had to surmount the sharp social gulf separating the couple before he finally achieved his purpose. The novel provides the reader with a lifelike, albeit in some places somewhat romantic depiction of Swedish noble life in the Swedish Duchy of Estonia and in Sweden proper in the mid-1660s. Perhaps more importantly, putting together bits and pieces from Stratonice, Hiärne’s diary of 1665 and his later Curriculum vitæ meæ brings new insights into biographical particulars of the brothers Hiärne and their social networks, especially of Erland, Thomas and Urban Hiärne, all former students of Academia Gustaviana in Tartu. Apart from Urban, whose literary remains include Stratonice, the play Rosimunda, and some hundred poems, it transpires that also Erland and Thomas Hiärne wrote occasional poetry, in particular the oldest brother Erland, who composed verses mainly in Latin, but also in Swedish, Greek and Hebrew. Furthermore, Thomas Hiärne, besides being a well-known chronicler, is also the author of a lengthy poem in Swedish and a few occasional poems in German and Swedish. It is also argued that Cornificius, one of the minor characters in Stratonice, is the fictitious name of Carl Hiärne, youngest in the circle of Hiärne brothers.
