  • Samarbete = Samverkan? : En fallstudie av AIMday vid Uppsala universitet
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As society's main producers of knowledge, universities have been entitled a key role for innovation and economic growth. In most OECD countries, universities have adopted a linear technology transfer model through which intellectual products in the form of patents, licenses and new businesses, are transferred from academic research to industry. In Sweden, however, law-related circumstances have resulted in a relatively passive technology transfer process at the Swedish universities. In recent years, innovation policy has increased the demand on Swedish universities to increase the external use of academic research by intensifying their interactions with external organizations. However, interactions between university researchers and external organizations typically forms based on the individual researchers’ incentives. This makes university-industry interactions difficult for the universities to control and steer from management level. In addition, how academic research specifically contributes to external needs through interactions is difficult for the universities to capture, measure and evaluate.Through an explorative case study the thesis investigates the operationalization of the Swedish universities’ interaction mission. The specific case study focuses on an interaction initiative at Uppsala University, trademarked as AIMday, and managed by the university´s innovation support organisation. AIMday has spread both at an intra- and inter-organizational level, despite the lack of measurable results. Through an institutional perspective, inspired by the material object and its involvement in organizational action, the study identifies several factors and other mechanisms influencing the spread of AIMday. The study reveals a complex process for spread and institutionalization, driven by the need for external legitimation but dependent on the interaction between Uppsala University’ innovation support organisation, objectified idea and its material properties, the target groups for the interactions (researchers and external organizations) and other universities.

  • En gökunge i public service-boet? : Publikens roll i digitaliseringen av marksänd television
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a Swedish setting an audience orientation is applied to investigate public service TV in the ongoing development of terrestrial digital television. Focus is on institutionalized politics and public service TV companies Sveriges Television (Swedish Television) and Utbildningsradion (Education Radio). In a case study through a multitude of material, emphasizing policy documents and interviews but also including media coverage, it is explored how and why the audience is involved in public service digital TV development. Is it an operation in the public interest, and what does this mean for public service as a media policy principle? The empirical result indicates a complex and problematic audience, which is not constantly prioritized but always present. The audience legacy is threatened in public service TV by a consumer orientation. Concluding implications are on the one hand that feedback from the audience can not only be based in ratings and market analysis. On the other hand there is a need for an attitude towards public service legitimacy as utopian realism.

  • Tidewater Glacier Surges Initiated at the Terminus
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9003 .- 2169-9011. ; 123:5, s. 1035-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been numerous reports that surges of tidewater glaciers in Svalbard were initiated at the terminus and propagated up-glacier, in contrast with downglacier-propagating surges of land-terminating glaciers. Most of these surges were poorly documented, and the cause of this behavior was unknown. We present detailed data on the recent surges of two tidewater glaciers, Aavatsmarkbreen and Wahlenbergbreen, in Svalbard. High-resolution time series of glacier velocities and evolution of crevasse patterns show that both surges propagated up-glacier in abrupt steps. Prior to the surges, both glaciers underwent retreat and steepening, and in the case of Aavatsmarkbreen, we demonstrate that this was accompanied by a large increase in driving stress in the terminal zone. The surges developed in response to two distinct processes. (1) During the late quiescent phase, internal thermodynamic processes and/or retreat from a pinning point caused acceleration of the glacier front, leading to the development of terminal crevasse fields. (2) Crevasses allowed surface meltwater and rainwater to access the bed, causing flow acceleration and development of new crevasses up-glacier. Upward migration of the surge coincided with stepwise expansion of the crevasse field. Geometric changes near the terminus of these glaciers appear to have led to greater strain heating, water production, and storage at the glacier bed. Water routing via crevasses likely plays an important role in the evolution of surges. The distinction between internally triggered surges and externally triggered speedups may not be straightforward. The behavior of these glaciers can be understood in terms of the enthalpy cycle model.

  • Human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL) is a specific granule constituent of the neutrophil granulocyte : Studies in bronchial and lung parenchymal tissue and peripheral blood cells
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Histochemistry and Cell Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0948-6143 .- 1432-119X. ; 107:5, s. 423-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutrophilic granulocyte is a cytotoxic and potentially tissue-injuring cell participating in the destructive processes and symptoms seen in a variety of inflammatory diseases. Sensitive immunoassays have been introduced to measure the levels of specific secretory proteins of various inflammatory cells in blood and other body fluids. The aim has been to develop highly specific markers for each cell type. The results obtained by immunoassay have indicated that human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL) is a protein unique to the neutrophil. The present study investigated the specificity of HNL as a neutrophil marker in peripheral blood and lung tissue by using flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry. Flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry on peripheral blood showed that monoclonal antibodies to HNL only react with neutrophils and not with other types of leukocytes. Immunocytochemistry on plastic-embedded sections and on frozen sections of lung tissue showed that a cocktail of six monoclonal antibodies to HNL specifically reacts with neutrophils and not with epithelial cells or macrophages. By immunoelectron microscopical studies performed on healthy human neutrophils after low temperature embedding in Lowicryl K4M following aldehyde fixation and partial dehydration, it could be shown that HNL colocalized with lactoferrin (a known marker for secondary or specific granules) and that myeloperoxidase was localized in the primary or azurophil granules. The results confirm that HNL is a unique component of the secondary granules of the neutrophil granulocyte.

  • The Whittaker model of the center of the quantum group and Hecke algebras
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 1978 Kostant suggested the Whittaker model of the center of the universal enveloping algebra U(g) of a complex simple Lie algebra g. An essential role in this construction is played by a non-singular character χ of the maximal nilpotent subalgebra n+ ⊂ g. The main result is that the center of U(g) is isomorphic to a commutative subalgebra in U(b_), where b_ ⊂ g is the opposite Borel subalgebra. This observation is used in the theory of principal series representations of the corresponding Lie group G and in the proof of complete integrability of the quantum Toda lattice. We show that the Whittaker model introduced by Kostant has a natural homological interpretation in terms of Hecke algebras. Moreover, we introduce a general definition of a Hecke algebra Hk*(A, B, χ) associated to the triple of an associative algebra A, a subalgebra B ⊂ A and a character χ of B. In particular, the Whittaker model of the center of U(g) is identified with Hk0(U(g), U(n+), χ)opp. The goal of this thesis is to generalise the Kostant's construction to quantum groups. An obvious obstruction is the fact that the subalgebra in Uh(g) generated by positive root generators (subject to the quantum Serre relations) does not have non-singular characters. In order to overcome this difficulty we introduce a family of new realisations of quantum groups, one for each Coxeter element of the corresponding Weyl group. The modified quantum Serre relations allow for non-singular characters, and we are able to construct the Whittaker model of the center of Uh(g).The new Whittaker model is applied to the deformed quantum Toda lattice recently studied by Etingof. We give new proofs of his results which resemble the original Kostant's proofs for the quantum Toda lattice. Finally, we study the "quasi-classical" limit of the Whittaker model for Uh(g). A remarkable new result is a cross-section theorem for the action of a complex simple Lie group on itself by conjugations. We are able to prove this theorem for all such Lie groups except for the case of E6! Using the cross-section theorem we establish a relation between the Whittaker model and the set of conjugacy classes of regular elements in the corresponding Lie group G.

  • Longitudinal study of RNA-based prognostic markers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia reveals LPL as the most stable
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several genes display differential expression in prognostic subsets in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), including LPL, TCL1, ZAP70 and MCL1. CLL patients commonly have an indolent course with low stage disease and long survival, and in this study we aimed to investigate the stability of RNA-based prognostic markers in such an indolent cohort over time. mRNA expression of LPL, TCL1, ZAP70 and MCL1 was measured in sequential unsorted samples obtained from 96 CLL patients at both diagnosis and a median follow-up of seven years. LPL was the only RNA-based marker that did not demonstrate any significant changes in expression in diagnostic vs. follow-up samples. Furthermore, an 82% concordance between both time-points was observed when grouping cases based on high or low expression. LPL expression was not affected by treatment and in addition, LPL expression in follow-up samples could predict overall survival. In contrast, TCL1 expression was found to increase at follow-up, especially in cases displaying low expression at diagnosis. As TCL1 promotes cell survival this increase could possibly be of importance for progression of the disease. Both ZAP70 and MCL1 mRNA expression were found to vary significantly during the disease course. In summary, using unsorted CLL samples, we have demonstrated that LPL is superior to other RNA-based markers based on stability over time. These findings fully endorse the use of LPL analysis at any time point of the disease.
