- The purpose of the paper is to derive Lagrange multiplier and Lagrange multiplier type specification and misspecification tests for vector smooth transition regression models. We report results from simulation studies in which the size and power properties of the proposed asymptotic tests in small samples are considered. The results on simulating the size show that these tests generally suffer from positive size distortion. We find that both Wilks’s Λ and Rao’s F statistic, the latter in particular, have satisfactory size properties and can generally be recommended for empirical use. The local asymptotic power and finite sample power properties of these tests are studied as well.

Specification, Estimation and Evaluation of Vector Smooth Transition Autoregressive Models with Applications

- We consider a nonlinear vector model called the logistic vector smooth transition autoregressive model. The bivariate single-transition vector smooth transition regression model of Camacho (2004) is generalised to a multivariate and multitransition one. A modelling strategy consisting of specification, including testing linearity, estimation and evaluation of these models is constructed. Nonlinear least squares estimation of the parameters of the model is discussed. Evaluation by misspecification tests is carried out using tests derived in a companion paper. The use of the modelling strategy is illustrated by two applications. In the first one, the dynamic relationship between the US gasoline price and consumption is studied and possible asymmetries in it considered. The second application consists of modelling two well known Icelandic riverflow series, previously considered by many hydrologists and time series analysts.

- X-ray magnetic linear dichroism spectra measured in reflection (XMLD-R) on crystalline bcc Fe thin films across the 3 p absorption edges are reported. A series of measurements with varying orientation of the electric field vector of the linear polarized synchrotron radiation with respect to the crystal axes reveals a strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the XMLD-R spectra. The spectra agree well with theoretical spectra calculated within the framework of the density-functional theory accounting for the spin-orbital and exchange splitting of the 3 p semicore states on an equal footing.

Late-onset neutropenia following rituximab therapy in rheumatic diseases : association with B lymphocyte depletion and infections

- OBJECTIVE:Late-onset neutropenia following rituximab therapy is a well-recognized side effect in lymphoma patients, but only a few cases of late-onset neutropenia have been reported in patients with autoimmune disorders. The purpose of this study was to define the incidence, clinical features, and some of the underlying mechanisms of late-onset neutropenia in relation to rituximab use in several rheumatic diseases.METHODS:We conducted a retrospective analysis of a cohort of 209 consecutive patients with rheumatic diseases who had been treated with rituximab at a university hospital between June 2003 and March 2009.RESULTS:Eleven patients with late-onset neutropenia were identified. The highest incidence was observed in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's) and systemic lupus erythematosus patients (23% and 20%, respectively), whereas the incidence in rheumatoid arthritis patients was 3%. The median time to onset of neutropenia was 102 days (range 40-362 days) and coincided with the entire period of B lymphocyte depletion; this depletion was more pronounced in patients with late-onset neutropenia (P = 0.002) than in a control group of 20 matched patients without late-onset neutropenia. Serum IgM levels decreased during the same time and to a significantly greater amount in patients with late-onset neutropenia than in controls (P = 0.027). No patient with late-onset neutropenia displayed specific antineutrophil antibodies. Seven patients were hospitalized because of infections (6 with sepsis and 1 with febrile neutropenia) that required intravenous antibiotics. Six were treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.CONCLUSION:In patients treated with rituximab for rheumatic diseases, late-onset neutropenia is a clinically significant adverse event associated with marked B lymphocyte depletion and severe infections. The incidence of late-onset neutropenia appears to vary with autoimmune disease type.

The role of BAFF and G-CSF for rituximab-induced late-onset neutropenia (LON) in lymphomas

- Mechanisms for late-onset neutropenia (LON) after rituximab treatment are poorly defined both for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and for autoimmune disorders. We performed a case-control analysis of a prospective cohort of 169 evaluable consecutive rituximab-treated NHL patients to assess cytokines involved in neutro- and lymphopoiesis (G-CSF, SDF1, BAFF, APRIL) and inflammation (CRP) as possible LON mechanisms. Fifteen patients (9%) developed LON (peripheral blood /PB/ absolute neutrophil counts /ANC/<0.5 G/L, all with marked depletion of CD20(+) B-lymphocytes in bone marrows); they were compared with 20 matched NHL controls without LON. At start of LON, significantly higher PB G-CSF and BAFF levels (P=0.0004 and 0.006, respectively), as well as CRP rises were noted compared to controls; these G-CSF and BAFF and most CRP values returned to levels of the controls in post-LON samples. G-CSF (but not BAFF) changes correlated to CRP rises (but not to ANC levels). BAFF levels correlated significantly to absolute monocyte counts and PB large granular lymphocyte counts (but not to ANC, C-CSF or CRP values). No changes of SDF1 or APRIL levels were noted. Neither LON cases nor controls displayed anti-neutrophil autoantibodies. Collectively, LON in NHL patients was timewise related to transient bursts of blood G-CSF and BAFF concentrations, suggesting that these neutro- and lymphopoiesis growth factors play a role in emergence of rituximab-induced LON, and that inflammation may be a trigger for G-CSF production during LON.

On the Manganese Dissolution Process from LiMn2O4 Cathode Materials

- Transition metal (TM) dissolution is a process experienced by most cathode materials based on lithium transition metal oxides. Spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is the best-known cathode material that suffers from TM dissolution. Therefore, LMO is selected here to understand the dissolution process and derive an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method for quantifying dissolved metal ions. Furthermore, the LMO powder is coated with thin Al2O3 films of different thicknesses using atomic layer deposition (ALD) in an attempt to suppress the dissolution of Mn. Two different types of counter electrodes, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and Li-metal, were used to investigate the role of the counter electrode on Mn dissolution. HF is identified as the lead cause of Mn dissolution, through comparisons of cells containing LiPF6 or LiClO4 based electrolytes. The results show that Li-metal counter electrode effectively minimizes the dissolution process via likely consuming HF and H2O impurity. In contradiction to the purpose of the protective Al2O3 thin film coating, surface coated LMO showed higher dissolution of Mn compared to pristine LMO, both in LFP||LMO and Li||LMO configurations. Al2O3 is proposed to generate H2O when reacts with HF. H2O could have the possibility to migrate back in the electrolyte and participate in the hydrolysis of LiPF6, resulting in more HF and thereby more Mn dissolution.

Revealing capacity fading in Sb-based anodes using symmetric sodium-ion cells

- The electrochemical performance of negative active materials employed in sodium-ion batteries is dependent on the amount of Na+ available in the test cells. As such, electrodes that exhibit long cycle-life and high coulombic efficiency (CE) in half-cells could suffer from fast capacity fading in full-cells as a result of unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and mechanical degradation leading to loss of active materials. In this work, the performance of Sb–graphite composite active materials prepared by extended ball-milling was evaluated in sodium half-cells and various types of symmetric cells (SCs). In half-cell tests, the composite electrodes provided specific capacities in the range 350–600 mAh g−1 at C/20 with initial CE of 82%. A stable capacity of 380 mAh g−1 was observed in the subsequent 100 cycles with the CE increasing to nearly 99%. However, self-discharge tests on half-cells and galvanostatic cycling of SCs revealed poor capacity retention as a result of parasitic reaction occurring through the SEI layer. Contrary to half-cells, the SCs revealed that Sb electrodes suffered from sharp capacity losses when a limited amount of Na+ ions was available in the cells. This is also characteristic of full-cells in which the sodium ions are supplied by the positive electrode.
