  • The VDP-triad in Ideational Analysis. Toward a general theory of ideological thought-content in social and political communication, debate, thought and language – beyond the concepts ‘ideology’, ‘culture’, ‘belief-system’, ‘discourse’ and ‘policy’ : Part II
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift. - Lund : Fahlbeckska stiftelsen, Lunds universitet. - 0039-0747. ; 120:3-4, s. 435-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is the second part (Part II) of a longer essay with the aim to propose a unified analytical framework, or a general theory, of ideological thought content. As we saw in Part I (in Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift 2018/2) I suggest that all social and political communication and language consists of three basic kinds of thought: values (V), descriptions (D) and prescriptions (P). These are connected in quasi-logical sequences of practical reasoning. On these grounds I propose the theoretical model of the VDP-triad. I also present an attached analytical scheme for content-oriented idea-analysis and idea-criticism. The scheme involves two basic levels of ideological thought – present in all social and political thought and language – the fundamental level (of philosophical principles, worldviews or human nature) and the operative level (of practical analyses of the situation and practical suggestions for action). My general method in theory development is presented as reconstructive theoretical synthesis, drawing on earlier, prevailing theories and empirical research of the ideational phenomenon in society. Part One consisted of Chapter One, ‘Bringing ideas back in’ (Sections 1–7), and Chapter Two, ‘Encircling the proposed general theory’ (Sections 8–14).  Part Two, here (published in Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift 2018/3-4) moves from hypotheses and preliminaries to actual, constructive theoretical work. Chapter Three is titled ‘The three main concepts of ideology in the prevailing knowledge situation; and the three main concepts of discourse’. This chapter contains a critical investigation of the three main theoretical traditions in contemporary social science regarding the ideational phenomenon in society, each with a concept of ‘ideology’ of its own. In Section 16 we find the sociological knowledge tradition and the concept of ‘culture’ where ‘ideology’ is seen as a sub-variant of ‘culture’. In section 17 we find the political science knowledge tradition and the concept of (plural) ‘political ideologies’ in parties and organizations on the input side of the political system. In section 18 we find the Marxist tradition with the notion of ‘the (dominating) ideology in society’, including the Foucauldian concept of a ‘(dominating) discourse’; I thus include Foucault and the Foucauldians in the Marxist family tree. In Section 19 I turn to the concept of ‘discourse’ as it is used in the discipline of linguistics, in studies of social and political language. My main concern is how the concept of ‘ideology’ in the prominent research program Critical Discourse Analysis is related to the linguistic concept of ‘discourse’. Later, in Chapter Four, Section 20, we will brush against some more conceptualizations in other, approach-bound terminologies regarding social and political ideas.   Chapter four, ‘Working towards the general theory’ (Sections 20–22) is a kind of bridge between the critical explorations of the theoretical traditions in the prevailing knowledge situation (in Chapter Three) and the actual reconstruction-construction of the proposed general theory. In Chapter four we will meet a flowerbed of analytical concepts used in various empirical approaches, like ‘belief-system’, ‘frame’ or ‘policy’ (Section 20). I show a possible way how these concepts might be integrated in my general theory of ideological thought-content, the VDP-triad. Or to put it the other way around, how the concept ‘ideological thought-content’ of the VDP-triad would be possible to use in any of these different approaches. After that we meet (Section 21) the underlying assumption of communicative actions and interactions as the social theoretical anchorage for my theorizing (see also Part I, Section 8; and Section 16 here below). We also meet the underlying assumption of language in my theorizing (Section 22), where the (ordinary) social and political language in communicative actions is proposed to be generically dialogical, dialectical or argumentative (see also Part I, Section 14; and Section 29 here below). Chapter five, at last, is titled ‘Proposing the general theory’ and is doing exactly that. In the Sections 23–28 all building-bricks and connective fittings that have been brought forward so far in the foregoing chapters are assembled, ending up in the VDP-triad as the backbone of my proposed general theory. Section 29 is a comment on the intricacies of the methodological use of the VDP-triad, the procedure of interpretation in the process of discerning and describing the three basic kinds of thought involved in all social and political thought, communication and language. Then follows Chapter six, the conclusion (Section 30), where I summarize the perceived merits of my proposed general theory, suggesting it as ‘The strong alternative’ among other, available theoretical suggestions.

  • Tourism networking for regional place innovation in Swedish Lapland
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-0660 .- 1753-0679. ; 7:4, s. 257-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article presents a case study of tourism networking in the regional destination Swedish Lapland, exploring how 'place innovation' can be used as a new scientific and practical concept to study co-innovative development of attractive and sustainable places. Drawing upon previous studies of inclusive innovation, place innovation and tourism destination development, it is distinguished how the networking among the involved entrepreneurs, designers, architects, destination management organisations, business promoters, municipalities, researchers etc., is characterised by negotiations in relation to the main components, target groups and innovation forms of place innovation. These encompass the components of configuration, content and communication, the target groups of visitors, residents and businesses, as well as the innovation forms of service innovation, user-driven innovation and social innovation. The specific set of interacting actors in the studied network made the negotiations result in a prioritisation of the commercial content over the public and civil content, of visitors over residents and businesses, and of service innovation and social innovation over user-driven innovation, affecting the prospects of attaining attractive and sustainable regional destinations.

  • Undoing gender in EU’s social innovation policies?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation. - 2043-8257 .- 2043-8265. ; 4:1, s. 67-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EU’s new policy strategies for growth and innovation include astrong commitment to promote social innovation – in contrast to the earlierfocus on technological innovation – potentially decreasing the identified gendergap in innovation. The article scrutinises this potential of ‘undoing gender’ inEurope 2020 and Innovation Union by means of the new scientific concept‘gendered social innovation’ and the discourse analytical approach ‘What’s theproblem represented to be?’. The results expose that the broad approach toinnovation identified on a general level in the strategies, seems to open uppublic innovation support to wider societal participation and benefit with amore equal inclusion of women and men in innovation, by including a broadrange of sectors, industries, organisations, disciplines and innovation types. Ona more specific level, possible reinforcement of existing gender patterns isidentified, however, due to excluding elements in parallel strategies of smartspecialisation, critical mass and excellence.

  • Whole lactation production responses in high-yielding dairy cows using high-quality grass/clover silage
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. - : Wiley. - 0022-5142 .- 1097-0010. ; 97, s. 2883 - 2890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDLimiting the use of purchased concentrate for livestock and replacing it with home-grown forage without compromising milk production can offer benefits in both organic and conventional dairy systems. A full lactation trial was conducted with 92 cows over two years comparing three diets, each differing in the mean forage proportion over the lactation, 500 (500F), 600 (600F) and 700 (700F) g kg(-1) dry matter (DM) respectively. The diets were designed to represent common conventional feeding, current regulations for organic production and more extreme high-forage-based production respectively. The aims were to determine the effects of forage proportion in the diet on milk production and feed utilisation.RESULTSCompared with 500F, daily milk yield did not differ in 600F but was lower in 700F (31.3, 31.1 and 29.2 kg energy-corrected milk respectively). Daily dry matter intake (DMI) was similar between treatments (20.3, 20.4 and 19.9 kg in 500F, 600F and 700F respectively).CONCLUSIONIncreasing the forage proportion from 500 to 600 g kg(-1) DM did not have any adverse effects on milk production or DMI. Thus it is possible to produce the same quantity of milk with less concentrate and reduce the use of potential human feeds in dairy production. (c) 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

  • Women, reindeer herding and the Internet: an innovative process in northern Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Innovation. The European Journal of Social Science Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1351-1610 .- 1469-8412. ; 23:2, s. 169-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research note deals with an innovation initiative involving women, reindeer herding and the Internet. It shows how women reindeer herders from a Swedish Sami village were a driving force in the development of several innovative, EU-funded projects focusing on information and communications technology. The article shows how the innovation initiative involved a wide range of actors, ascribing stakeholders from civil society important roles besides the public and private sectors. The innovation initiative involved several different strategies. One of these strategies was internationalization - both at the European and worldwide levels. This strategy was employed to prevent rigid political hierarchies blocking the prospects of gaining support from local and regional authorities. Another strategy was the continuous exchange of knowledge between engineers and potential end users, adapting the initiative results to the needs of the local context. As a result, the innovation initiative has produced several kinds of outcomes. It has generated new technology as well as economic and social benefits.

  • Women resource centres : Creative knowledge environments of quadruple helix
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Knowledge Economy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1868-7865 .- 1868-7873. ; 3:1, s. 36-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Creative behaviour has been claimed to be a vital ingredient for the inventions and innovations that are indispensable for the dawning knowledge society. The causality between creativity, knowledge development and innovation ascribes creative knowledge environments an important role as work settings in which people produce new knowledge. The Creative Knowledge Environment approach reaches beyond the Triple Helix model—promoted in innovation policy and research—in its potential to acknowledge creative environments outside academia, industry and government. This is a relevant contribution since the public funding of Triple Helix constellations has been criticised for paradoxically consolidating old structures rather than opening up for creative change. In this article, the model of Women Resource Centres (WRCs)—developed in Sweden and internationalized throughout Europe—serves as an example of how creativity in the organization of joint action networks can make new knowledge and innovation prosper. These centres were initiated in order to promote gender equality in regional development policy, enhancing women’s realization of business ideas and innovations. The model of Women Resource Centres illustrates the need for further development of predominant models for promoting innovation. Suggested concepts such as Creative Knowledge Environments and Quadruple Helix have the potential to increase the diversity of actors and areas being acknowledged as important in the expanding knowledge economy, by including the civil society and creative industries. However, the example of WRCs exposes an aspect of creativity and innovation that is not properly addressed in the suggested models, namely the aspect of gender.

  • Work and everyday life in a digitalized time: Experiences of people with subjective cognitive difficulties related to neurological disorders
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : PLOS. - 1932-6203. ; 16:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Digitalization has changed working life and increased cognitive demands on employees in general. Nevertheless, the consequences for employees with cognitive impairments and subjective cognitive difficulties are to a large extent unexplored. The aim of this study was to explore and describe how employees with subjective cognitive difficulties who are performing digital work tasks experience their vocational situation and how this situation influences their everyday life. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, multiple-case study was designed. Self-reports, assessments and qualitative interviews were used to collect data from the seven participants with neurological disorders. The data were analysed using pattern matching.Findings: The analysed data formed four categories conceptualized as "Working to my full potential", "Working, but it is largely up to me", "Working at the expense of everyday life" and "Working without known difficulties", and these categories included one to four subcategories. Conclusion: Managing subjective cognitive difficulties in vocational situations and everyday life was challenging in a digitalized working life for participants with neurological disorders. To provide equal access to preventive measures and rehabilitation and a sustainable working life, it is important to investigate the influence of subjective cognitive difficulties systematically on work, everyday life and management strategies in people with neurological disorders in digitalized work.
