  • Impact of Growing Business on Software Processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: SYSTEMS, SOFTWARE AND SERVICES PROCESS IMPROVEMENT. - SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN : BERLIN. - 9783642156656 ; , s. 189-200
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When growing their businesses, software organizations should not only put effort into developing and executing their business strategies, but also into managing and improving their internal software development processes and aligning them with business growth strategies. It is only in this way they may confirm that their businesses grow in a healthy and sustainable way. In this paper, we map out one software company's business growth on the course of its historical events and identify its impact on the company's software production processes and capabilities. The impact concerns benefits, challenges, problems and lessons learned. The most important lesson learned is that although business growth has become a stimulus for starting thinking and improving software processes, the organization lacked guidelines aiding it in and aligning it to business growth. Finally, the paper generates research questions providing a platform for future research.

  • Process model of software method transition
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Software Engineering Conference (APSEC), 2012 19th Asia-Pacific. - : IEEE. - 9780769549224 ; , s. 276-281
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transitioning from one software development method to another has become a common routine for many companies. Despite this' very few reports give clear and detailed guidelines on how to conduct a process transition. This paper reports on two real-life process transitions and suggests a general process model of Software Method Transition (SoMeT). The SoMeT model aims to guide a transition from one software method to another.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Systems, Software and Services Process Improvement, (EUROSPI 2012). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783642311987 ; , s. 85-96

    • Positive results achieved by software process improvement (SPI) efforts tend to degrade with time. To prevent degradation, companies need to regularly evaluate their SPI efforts and tackle potential SPI problems in a timely manner. This can be done by evaluating the conditions necessary for succeeding with the SPI implementations and sustaining their results. In this paper, we suggest an SPI Health Checklist to be used for diagnosing the health of the SPI efforts.

  • Success Factors Leading to the Sustainability of Software Process Improvement Efforts
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the fact that many software organizationsput a lot of effort into software process improvement, theystill do not always succeed in sustaining the improvementresults. We believe that this is due to the fact that currentsoftware process improvement frameworks and/or modelsdo not provide any aid in form of a list of success factors thatprimarily contribute to the sustainability of SPI efforts. Inthis paper, we compile thirty two SPI success factors aselicited in theoretical and empirical studies. Our primarygoal is to aid software companies in defining, planning, monitoring and improving their SPI efforts. Our secondarygoal is to create a basis for identifying SPI health attributeswhich, in turn, would allow software companies to determinethe health of their SPI projects.

  • A low power strategy for future mobile terminals
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: DESIGN, AUTOMATION AND TEST IN EUROPE CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION, VOLS 1 AND 2, PROCEEDINGS. - LOS ALAMITOS : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 0769520855 ; , s. 702-703
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we have investigated the efficiency of two power-saving strategies that reduces both static and dynamic power consumption when applied to a chip-multiprocessor (CMP). They are evaluated under two workload scenarios and compared against a conventional uni-processor architecture and a CMP without any power-aware scheduling. The results show that energy due to static and dynamic power consumption can be reduced by, up to 78% and that further 8% energy can be saved at the expense of response-time of non-critical applications. Furthermore, a small study on the potential impact of system-level events showed that system calls can contribute significantly to the total energy consumed.

  • A multiprogrammed workload model for energy and performance estimation of adaptive chip-multiprocessors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 18th International  Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, 2004. - : IEEE. - 0769521320 ; , s. 3449-3456
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary form only given. Today, there is a trend towards steadily increasing functionality in mobile terminals. This trend in turn increases the performance demand on the architecture that is supposed to do all the work. It is likely that more traditional architectures like multiprocessors are used in future mobile terminals. They are attractive because they can now be integrated on a single chip and can provide the desired performance efficiently if intelligently managed. Choosing the most efficient architecture configuration is however a complex issue and depends on multiple factors. We believe that the way the behavior of the workload is modeled is of paramount importance when estimating the efficiency of any proposed architecture for future mobile terminals. Therefore, a deterministic and simple workload description is needed. In this paper, we show how such a multiprogrammed workload is created and used for energy and performance estimation of an adaptive chip-multiprocessor (CMP) architecture.

  • A study on periodic shutdown for adaptive CMPs in handheld devices
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 13TH ASIA-PACIFIC COMPUTER SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE CONFERENCE. - New York : IEEE. - 9781424426829 ; , s. 308-314
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenge to satisfy the demand for higher computing performance has become an increasingly difficult task to achieve. In the area of mobile devices, this demand has to be carefully balanced with an efficient use of the power source. We propose the use of an adaptive architecture that enables savings in power and energy in an intuitive way, considering the properties of future process technologies. We satisfy performance demand by utilizing thread-level parallelism and minimize the power and energy consumption by proposing an adaptive strategy that manages the power state of each individual CMP-core. In this study, we propose a periodical shutdown strategy and evaluate it in a multiprogrammed workload environment. Results show that a large amount of idle time, 77 %, can be saved by putting processors into power-saving states. Furthermore, introducing timeouts can dramatically decrease the number of state transitions.
