  • A bone-anchored hearing aid for patients with pure sensorineural hearing impairment: a pilot study.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian audiology. - : TAYLOR and FRANCIS AS. - 0105-0397 .- 1940-2872. ; 29:3, s. 175-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This pilot study assesses the potential benefits of an optimized bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) for patients with a mild to moderate pure sensorineural high frequency hearing impairment. The evaluation was conducted with eight first-time hearing aid users by means of psycho-acoustic sound field measurements and a questionnaire on subjective experience; all of the patients benefited from the BAHA. On average, the eight patients showed improvement in PTA threshold of 3.4 dB and in speech intelligibility in noise of 14%. Seven of the subjects, also fitted with present standard air conduction hearing aids (ACHA) found the ACHA thresholds to be improved more than the BAHA ones. In speech tests, the ACHA was only slightly better; these patients chose between their different hearing aids according to the sound environment. Although the BAHA was preferred for wearing and sound comfort, it cannot be used as the sole aid for patients with pure sensorineural impairment.

  • High fruit intake may reduce mortality among middle-aged and elderly men. The Study of Men Born in 1913.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: European journal of clinical nutrition. - 0954-3007. ; 54:4, s. 337-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: A number of long-term population-based studies have tried to study fruit and vegetable consumption in relation to cardiovascular disease, cancer and total mortality. Few of these studies are based on randomly selected population samples. The aim of the study was to investigate the long-term effect of fruit and vegetable consumption on mortality, cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular death, cancer morbidity and cancer death among middle-aged and elderly men. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: General community. The Study of Men Born in 1913. SUBJECTS: 792 men at age 54 who participated in a screening examination in 1967. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A food frequency questionnaire was used to obtain information of the dietary habits in 730 of the men (92%). All men were followed up with repeated examinations until the age of 80. RESULTS: Cardiovascular as well as total mortality was significantly lower among men with high fruit consumption in univariate analysis. There was no correlation between fruit or vegetable consumption in relation to cancer incidence, cancer death and cardiovascular disease. In multivariate survival analysis where smoking, cholesterol and hypertension were taken into account, there was a significantly lower mortality among men with a high fruit consumption during 16 y follow up until the age of 70 (P=0.042), but this finding was no longer statistically significant during 26 y follow-up at the age of 80 (P=0.051). CONCLUSIONS: Daily fruit consumption seems to have positive effect on long-term survival independently of other traditional cardiovascular risk factors like smoking, hypertension and cholesterol. SPONSORSHIP: This study was supported by grants from the Swedish Medical Research Council (K98-274-06276-17) King Gustav V and Queen Victoria's Foundation, and the Göteborg University.

  • Distribution of the Galalpha1-3Gal antigen in cultured adult and fetal porcine pancreatic islet cells: an immunoelectron microscopic study.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Transplantation. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0041-1337. ; 70, s. 846-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The distribution of the Galalpha1-3Gal antigen (Galalpha) in cultured adult porcine islets (API) and fetal porcine pancreatic islet-like cell clusters (ICC) was studied using immunoelectron microscopy. API and ICC were cultured for 1 and 5 days, respectively, and immunogold labeled using human affinity isolated anti-Galalpha1-3Gal antibody, GS-IB4 lectin and antibodies against islet pancreatic hormones, vimentin, and von Willebrand factor. Differentiated endocrine cells were Gala-negative, but, in ICC, some immature endocrine cells were slightly Gala-positive. The Gala-expression in API was much weaker compared to ICC. In both API and ICC, the Gala antigen was expressed on duct epithelial cells, acinar cells, and endothelial cells. In ICC, strong Gala expression was observed on flattened cells covering their surfaces. These cells were identified as centroacinar cells originating from intra-islet ducts. In conclusion, although mature endocrine cells of cultured API and ICC lack the Gala-xenoantigen, several other cellular compounds are strongly Gala positive, which may contribute to xenorejection of these grafts.
