• Minimum detection efficiency required for a loophole-free violation of the Braunstein-Caves chained Bell inequalities
• 2009
• Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - American Physical Society. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 79:6, s. 062109-1-062109-7
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
The chained Bell inequalities of Braunstein and Caves involving N settings per observer have some interesting applications. Here we obtain the minimum detection efficiency required for a loophole-free violation of the Braunstein-Caves inequalities for any N greater than= 2. We discuss both the case in which both particles are detected with the same efficiency and the case in which the particles are detected with different efficiencies.

• Proposed experiments of qutrit state-independent contextuality and two-qutrit contextuality-based nonlocality
• 2012
• Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 85:3, s. 032108
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
Recent experiments have demonstrated ququart state-independent quantum contextuality and qutrit state-dependent quantum contextuality. So far, the most basic form of quantum contextuality pointed out by Kochen and Specker, and Bell, has eluded experimental confirmation. Here we present an experimentally feasible test to observe qutrit state-independent quantum contextuality using single photons in a three-path setup. In addition, we show that if the same measurements are performed on two entangled qutrits, rather than sequentially on the same qutrit, then the noncontextual inequality becomes a Bell inequality. We show that this connection also applies to other recently introduced noncontextual inequalities.

• Quantum contextuality for rational vectors
• 2010
• Ingår i: Physics Letters A. - Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.. - 0375-9601 .- 1873-2429. ; 375:2, s. 99-99
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
The Kochen-Specker theorem states that noncontextual hidden variable models are inconsistent with the quantum predictions for every yes-no question on a qutrit, corresponding to every projector in three dimensions. It has been suggested [D.A. Meyer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 (1999) 3751] that the inconsistency would disappear when restricting to projectors on unit vectors with rational components; that noncontextual hidden variables could reproduce the quantum predictions for rational vectors. Here we show that a qutrit state with rational components violates an inequality valid for noncontextual hidden-variable models [A.A. Klyachko et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 (2008) 020403] using rational projectors. This shows that the inconsistency remains even when using only rational vectors.

• Quantum social networks
• 2012
• Ingår i: Journal of Physics A : Mathematical and Theoretical. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 45:28, s. 285101
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
We introduce a physical approach to social networks (SNs) in which each actor is characterized by a yes-no test on a physical system. This allows us to consider SNs beyond those originated by interactions based on pre-existing properties, as in a classical SN (CSN). As an example of SNs beyond CSNs, we introduce quantum SNs (QSNs) in which actor i is characterized by a test of whether or not the system is in a quantum state |psi(i)>. We show that QSNs outperform CSNs for a certain task and some graphs. We identify the simplest of these graphs and show that graphs in which QSNs outperform CSNs are increasingly frequent as the number of vertices increases. We also discuss more general SNs and identify the simplest graphs in which QSNs cannot be outperformed.

• Simple Hardy-Like Proof of Quantum Contextuality
• 2013
• Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 111:18, s. 180404
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
Contextuality and nonlocality are two fundamental properties of nature. Hardy's proof is considered the simplest proof of nonlocality and can also be seen as a particular violation of the simplest Bell inequality. A fundamental question is: Which is the simplest proof of contextuality? We show that there is a Hardy-like proof of contextuality that can also be seen as a particular violation of the simplest noncontextuality inequality. Interestingly, this new proof connects this inequality with the proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem, providing the missing link between these two fundamental results, and can be extended to an arbitrary odd number n of settings, an extension that can be seen as a particular violation of the n-cycle inequality.

• The Contextual Computer
• 2013
• Ingår i: Computable Universe : Understanding and Exploring Nature as Computation. - Singapore : World Scientific Publishing. - 978-981-4374-30-9 - 978-981-4374-29-3 ; s. 595-604
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
What kind of computer is the universe? Here we present three results. The first is a consequence of the Kochen-Specker theorem: If the predictions of quantum mechanics are correct, then the universe cannot be a non-contextual computer. We then show that, if we assume that the density of memory is bounded, then the universe cannot be a classical contextual computer. The third result singles out the universe among all possible contextual computers by exploiting a curious connection with graph theory: In the universe, the maximal contextuality of a set of propositions is given by the Lovasz number of the graph representing their mutual exclusiveness.

• Thermodynamical cost of some interpretations of quantum theory
• 2016
• Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW A. - AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9926. ; 94:5
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
The interpretation of quantum theory is one of the longest-standing debates in physics. Type I interpretations see quantum probabilities as determined by intrinsic properties of the observed system. Type II see them as relational experiences between an observer and the system. It is usually believed that a decision between these two options cannot be made simply on purely physical grounds but requires an act of metaphysical judgment. Here we show that, under some assumptions, the problem is decidable using thermodynamics. We prove that type I interpretations are incompatible with the following assumptions: (i) The choice of which measurement is performed can be made randomly and independently of the system under observation, (ii) the system has limited memory, and (iii) Landauers erasure principle holds.

• Postselection-Loophole-Free Bell Test Over an Installed Optical Fiber Network
• 2015
• Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 115:3, s. 030503
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
Device-independent quantum communication will require a loophole-free violation of Bell inequalities. In typical scenarios where line of sight between the communicating parties is not available, it is convenient to use energy-time entangled photons due to intrinsic robustness while propagating over optical fibers. Here we show an energy-time Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality violation with two parties separated by 3.7 km over the deployed optical fiber network belonging to the University of Concepcion in Chile. Remarkably, this is the first Bell violation with spatially separated parties that is free of the postselection loophole, which affected all previous in-field long-distance energy-time experiments. Our work takes a further step towards a fiber-based loophole-free Bell test, which is highly desired for secure quantum communication due to the widespread existing telecommunication infrastructure.

• Quantum contextuality for a relativistic spin-1/2 particle
• 2013
• Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 87:2, s. 022109
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
The quantum predictions for a single nonrelativistic spin-1/2 particle can be reproduced by noncontextual hidden variables. Here we show that quantum contextuality for a relativistic electron moving in a Coulomb potential naturally emerges if relativistic effects are taken into account. The contextuality can be identified through the violation of noncontextuality inequalities. We also discuss quantum contextuality for the free Dirac electron as well as the relativistic Dirac oscillator. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.87.022109
