    • The orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of the transition-metal ion in the isostructural weak ferromagnets ACO(3) (A = Mn,Co,Ni) and FeBO3 was investigated by a combination of first-principles calculations, nonresonant x-ray magnetic scattering, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A nontrivial evolution of the orbital moment as a function of the 3d orbitals filling is revealed, with a particularly large value found in the Co member of the family. Here, the coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom produced by the spin-orbit interaction results in a large single-ion anisotropy and a peculiar magnetic-moment-induced electron cloud distortion, evidenced by the appearance of a subtle scattering amplitude at space-group-forbidden reflections and significant magnetostrictive effects. Our results, which complement a previous investigation on the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction across the series, highlight the importance of spin-orbit coupling in the physics of weak ferromagnets and prove the ability of modern first-principles calculations to predict the properties of materials where the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is a fundamental ingredient of the magnetic Hamiltonian.

  • DESMAN a new tool for de novo extraction of strains from metagenomes

    • We introduce DESMAN for De novo Extraction of Strains from Metagenomes. Large multi-sample metagenomes are being generated but strain variation results in fragmentary co-assemblies. Current algorithms can bin contigs into metagenome-assembled genomes but are unable to resolve strain-level variation. DESMAN identifies variants in core genes and uses co-occurrence across samples to link variants into haplotypes and abundance profiles. These are then searched for against non-core genes to determine the accessory genome of each strain. We validated DESMAN on a complex 50-species 210-genome 96-sample synthetic mock data set and then applied it to the Tara Oceans microbiome.

    • Weathering of mine tailings in Adak results in high As concentrations in surface and ground water, sediments, and soil. In spite of the oxic conditions, As-rich surface and ground water samples indicate As(III) species predominantly (up to 83%). Several microorganisms were isolated from the enrichment cultures that were involved in As cycling. Amongst them was Arsenicicoccus bolidensis — a novel gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, coccus-shaped actinomycete, which actively reduced As(V) to As(III) in aqueous media. A. bolidensis reduced 0.06–0.20 mM day− 1 As(V). As(V) reduction displays a direct correlation between the initial As(V) concentration, growth rate, and biomass yield.

    • Accumulation of dust on the equipment for remotely handled (RH) operations was studied in JET with the ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) during the shutdown period following the third ILW campaign. The topic is connected to licensing procedures for ITER: the need to assess risks related to the external transfer of beryllium and radioactive matter with tritium and activation products. Ten adhesive carbon pads were placed in different locations on the robotic arm operated in-vessel for 672 h. Also air samplers were used during the RH operation and smear tests of the RH boom were performed to quantify specific contamination levels by beryllium and tritium. Dust morphology was determined by microscopy techniques. The areal density of dust varies at different sticker position on the boom. On some parts (e.g. 'wrists' of the robot) the density of particles exceeds 1000 per mm(2). Their morphology is very diverse but most collected objects originate from the construction material (aluminium) of the RH equipment itself. The accumulation of Be- and W-based particles is negligible. The study confirms earlier experimental evidence that Be-rich co-deposits (and also W coatings on CFC) adhere well to plasma-facing components and they are not easily mobilised.
